*full disclosure: a DVD copy of this title was won in a contest from the horror website Igorslab.com. Director: A.D. Calvo. Writers: Alyssa Alexander, A.D. Calvo, Nevada Grey and Scott Kittredge. Cast: Inbar Lavi, Steven Grayhm, Eddie Hassell, Holland Roden and John Lee Ames. This viewer has seen a number of Argentinian director A.D. Calvo's works. From The Other Side of the Tracks (2008) to the Melancholy Fantastic (2011), this director has had an up and down career, in this critic's opinion. His latest is a haunted asylum thriller, titled House of Dust. Taking a page from Brad Anderson's Session 9 (2001) or the more recent Psych: 9 (2009), several characters find murder in a mental institution. However, this incarnation is nowhere near as interesting as the other two titles mentioned. Instead, House of Dust is a trivial affair and the film is full of filler, in both the story and shooting department.

A.D. Calvo is the director behind The Haunting of Amelia (aka The Other Side of the Tracks) which stars Brendan Fehr, Chad Lindberg, Tania Raymonde, Beatrice Rosen, Stephnie Weir, Natassia Malthe, Sam Robards and Shirley Knight. What has made this new director stand out in a crowded market is his ability to cohesively blend many genres in his films including elements of horror, fantasy, drama, romance, coming of age, etc. His films don't feel jerky or uneven. The material has a way of lending itself to each of the genres he is incorporating into the material. The Haunting of Amelia showed a director with potential who can handle the pressures of telling a complex story, who could take on multiple duties and who could sensitively handle having name stars in his film. Now that The Haunting of Amelia is hitting DVD and Showtime, hopefully that will open the door for...

Nearly thirty something is torn over the death of his high school sweetheart ten years earlier, but things look brighter when he falls in love with a mysterious young woman. As things look on the upswing for him, he starts to become haunted by supernatural forces. Could it have anything to do with this mysterious new woman?
The Haunting of Amelia could be best described as a coming of age romantic drama with elements of the supernatural and otherworldly in place. When The Haunting of Amelia focuses in on blurring the lines of the supernatural, it's suspenseful, eerie and keeps one guessing as to how it is all going to unfold. When it focuses in on the coming of age aspect Brendan Fehr's transformation is credible.

It's another light week in horror title releases, but don't fret; the big name is out on a different form of media (hardcover book).
You can now take home the 3D spectacle that was the 4th installment of the Resident Evil film franchise, particularly if you have a 3D TV. More confirmed sequels means more 3D movies? We'll see. Also on tap are releases of lightweights And Soon the Darkness and The Haunting of Amelia.
If you're curious about what went on behind the scenes of the art design of District 9, you'll want to bring home that hardcover book mentioned above, which details the whole laborious process.

Plenty of passionate filmmakers decide to give it a go in the horror genre. While some of them have the drive, the ambition, the talent, a lot of them fail to create a distinctive film in a genre that has seen it all before and will see it again a million times more. So when a director and writer like A.D. Calvo comes along, we here at Big Daddy Horror Reviews take notice. What sets him apart from so many others that have tried so hard at creating something original is his ability to create narratives that seamlessly blend elements of horror, psychology, drama, romance, fantasy, even a bit of nostalgia and whimsy. He did solid work in The Other Side of the Tracks (now titled The Haunting of Amelia) starring Brendan Fehr and Chad Lindberg. Now he is following that up with The Melancholy Fantastic starring Amy Crowdis, Robin Lord Taylor,...
