Well-versed veteran of the comedy scene, Josh Ruben makes his directorial feature film debut here, with Scare Me, a film that aims to blend comedy and horror in a new way. Something fresh in a sub-genre that is well-trodden is always intriguing, and it isn’t easy to do, not in an age where it’s fairly rare to avoid walking the same steps and tropes that others have walked before.
Scare Me is something of a stage-play on screen, really. It has a small cast of only four characters, with two of them being the bulk of the film. Fred (Ruben) and Fanny (Aya Cash) are strangers who run into each other whilst renting cabins in the middle of nowhere in order to both focus on writing projects. In my book, director Josh Ruben is two-for-two after his efforts on last year’s Scare Me and now with his follow-up film, the horror comedy/whodunnit Werewolves Within. Written by Mishna Wolff and based on the Ubisoft game, Werewolves Within is easily one of the most confidently crafted genre mash-ups to come along in years that delivers a ton of laughs, a compelling mystery, and an incredibly talented ensemble who all deliver an array of memorable and scene-stealing performances. I’m no psychic, but I do suspect that by the end of this year, many horror fans will be touting Werewolves Within amongst their favorite genre films of 2021.
In Werewolves Within, we’re first introduced to Finn (Sam Richardson), who is heading to his new Ranger post in the snowy, small town of Beaverfield. He’s been recently “sort of” broken up with by his girlfriend, and so Finn...

Josh Ruben (Scare Me) opens his new film Werewolves Within with what may be a first, a quote from Mr. Rogers. Being as that was a kid’s TV show and this is an R-rated adaptation of a horror video, excuse me, virtual reality game that might not seem to be sending the right message. Just two films into his filmmaking career and Josh Ruben has fashioned his own brand of indie horror-comedy, with a little help from his friends. His debut “Scare Me” largely featured Aya Cash (“The Boys”) and the filmmaker himself play-acting through made-up horror stories, throwing in wild impressions and physical flourishes around a fireplace. The Sundance favorite is now playing on Shudder, and it’s a loving tribute to many of the horror movies that Ruben calls a “warm blanket,” all with the minimalist premise of telling a story.

“Good fences make good neighbors,” a long-dead, if still wise, American poet, Robert Frost, once said in probably his best-known, most popular poem, "Mending Walls." It’s a lesson only a few denizens of the fictional town of Beaverfield, Vermont in second-time director Josh Ruben (Scare Me) and first-time screenwriter Mishna Wolff’s consistently sharp-toothed adaptation of Ubisoft's 2016 VR videogame, Werewolves Within, have taken to heart. With the possible exception of a heavily bearded, fur-wearing survivalist who lives alone on the outskirts of town, fences mean next to nothing to the residents of Beaverfield. Good neighborliness ends where their bank accounts begin, especially where a new, potentially lucrative, gas pipeline is concerned, but that pipeline needs the small town’s unanimous approval and without that unanimous approval,...

“Trespass and die,” reads an unneighborly sign glimpsed early in Josh Ruben’s agile, niftily directed whodunit “Werewolves Within.” While the placard specifically refers to some local’s private property, one could safely apply the warning to the whole snow-clad Vermont village that surrounds it. Welcome to Beaverfield, a sleepy town chock-full of secrets, lies and ideological disparities you should only enter at your own peril. But know that it’s a risk well worth taking, especially if Rian Johnson’s delectable caper “Knives Out” has recently scratched your itch for cozily inviting, steadily funny murder mysteries where the identity of the killer is anyone’s guess until the end.
Along with his crafty screenwriter Mishna Wolff, Ruben constructs a similarly snug and entertaining world, one filled with wood-heavy interiors illuminated by crackling fireplaces and golden lanterns, where a group of terrified, booze-chugging Beaverfield dwellers has to wait out a snowstorm,...

Based on Ubisoft’s Mafia-like VR game of the same name, “Werewolves Within” is about the sheer terror of having to live alongside the kind of grown-ass, shotgun-toting, white American man who’s never even heard of Mr. Rogers. How are you supposed to share a country with a person like that? Emerson Flint (the always excellent Glenn Fleshler) and his “Revenant”-inspired wardrobe may not be the most dangerous threat awaiting forest ranger Finn Wheeler (“Veep” breakout Sam Richardson) in the snowy New England town to which he’s just been reassigned, but the guy’s “stay the fuck off my property” attitude proves typical of a place where virtually no one bothers to be a good neighbor — least of all the werewolf who may or may not be eating its way through the residents of Beaverfield.

“Werewolves always really got me, from the fellow in Monster Squad — you could always really feel his pain,” said director Josh Ruben of the 1987 film. But he was wary of a script based on a videogame, until he read this one.
“Videogame movies don’t have a great rep, but from the beginning it felt like Arachnophobia and Fargo,” he told Deadline’s Tribeca Studio. It came his way after a successful 2020 first feature, Scare Me, which, with theaters shut, debuted on Shudder last year.
Ruben was joined by Sam Richardson (Veep) who plays forest ranger Finn Wheeler on a new assignment in a weird, cold upstate New York town, and Milana Vayntrub as Cecily Moore, who delivers mail and shows him around. Quirky residents are fighting over a proposed pipeline project that’s being blocked by a few holdouts. But with danger lurking, the ensemble (including Casual’s Michaela Watkins...

A small town is besieged by a mysterious wolf-like predator. The town take shelter indoors, in one closed space together, and they slowly get picked off from inside. Actor, writer, and director Josh Ruben is having something of an indie moment. Known for Ucb Comedy, College Humor, and appearing on series like “You’re The Worst” and “Eat Sh*t Kenny Daniels,” Ruben broke out last year with the clever and funny horror/comedy “Scare Me,” that roasted white male privilege. The film was a big hit at Sundance last year and then when it premiered on Shudder.

The following is the second part of our in-depth interview with filmmaker Josh Ruben. To read part one, you can check it out Here.
While the entire experience was a delight, one thing I distinctly remember from the first time I met Josh Ruben for our interview at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival was his natural exuberance and his genuine excitement over being able to share his directorial debut, Scare Me, with audiences in Park City. That initial passion and enthusiasm never waned once as Ruben continued to chat about the film in the following months online, leading up to Scare Me’s release on Shudder in October 2020, and its eventual home media debut last month.

For nearly 15 years, Josh Ruben had been working in the industry making a name for himself on a variety of projects, but despite finding success in the world of comedy and a steady stream of commercial work, he still felt like something was missing. Eventually, Josh arrived at a crossroads, both personally and professionally, and decided it was time to get out there and start telling stories on his terms.
“This was a three-part journey for me,” explained Ruben. “I had this wonderfully privileged position of building up a brand and a name and a following for myself as a comedian and as a sketch comic writer personality as a cast member in the CollegeHumor world. But when I left CollegeHumor, I left to pursue a commercial directing career with a directing partner I had at the time, as that offered me the safety of a livable wage.”
