Defense Attorney Chauncey Zeirko (Peter Riegert ) says "This is the McMartin case all over again". This refers to the 1980's McMartin preschool trial in Los Angeles, where members of the McMartin family were charged with hundreds of sexual abuse acts of children in their preschool. The case lasted seven years, and resulted in no convictions. As of 2024, it is the longest and most expensive criminal case in United States history. In 2005, one of the former children retracted their allegations of abuse, saying that they lied at the time in order to please investigators and their parents. 400 children, through a series of leading questions and the offer of rewards, were encouraged to report instances of abuse at McMartin.
