The top brass of the country's space program are doing some experimenting. Instead of the "best and the brightest," they decide to search for someone with the LEAST intelligence --to man a space capsule?
Maynard is officially recruited!
All just an experiment, but it's wild. Maynard will spend weeks in a mock space capsule, testing his capability, his limits, his sanity with a monkey? Naturally, Dobie goes along for the ride. Thanks to the creative production people, the space ship (probably a combo of plywood and cardboard) looks fairly realistic.
Good writing by Arnold Horwitt, who also cranked out many episodes for PATTY DUKE. Horwitt may have also borrowed a bit from the BOWERY BOYS because this is just plain goofy.
Popular character actor Willis Bouchey plays the general, a role he seemed destined for. Willis also held a tv record, appearing 23 times as the judge on PERRY MASON.
TV actress Bea Benadaret, a master of cartoon voices, is heard in the background as a telephone operator.
Best fantasy sequence finds Maynard on an island with the monkey. Bob Denver as Gilligan? And kind of looking like him for a few seconds. Watch for it.
