Lt. Merriwether has written a play about a soldier's life in the Korean War. He wants his troop to be the main players in the production, to which they agree under duress. An unenthusiastic Dobie gets the lead as Maj. Gates, the war hero. But he eventually throws himself into the role. Dobie finds that the role has another benefit, as, still wearing his costume and pretending to be Maj. Gates, he attracts the attention of a girl named Dorrit McCurdy, who earlier didn't give him the time of day when she thought he was a lowly enlisted man. Although he makes some headway with Dorrit, Dobie may regret doing so when he meets Dorrit's father, Col. McCurdy. With the script in his head, Dobie tries to talk his way through the meeting with the Colonel, which may not be an easy task, especially with a request by the Colonel for the Korean War hero to do him a favor. Dobie's father may be able to get him out of this jam through some old connections, or so the Gillises believe.
