Chatsworth Osborne, Jr. has been kicked out of the Osborne mansion by his mother. It is not so much for his irresponsible, mean and unruly ways (as all Osbornes are irresponsible, mean and unruly), but because he was caught at it. He is banished from the mansion until he can prove to her that he is now a responsible adult, which might very well mean forever. In an act of kindness (?), Herbert invites Chatsworth to stay in the Gillis home. In reality, Herbert figures that Mrs. Osborne will regret her decision in a few days, welcome back Chatsworth with open arms, and lavishly repay the Gillises for their kindness. But the Gillises may go bankrupt paying for all of Chatsworth's lavish behavior before that happens. Herbert and Winnie are steadfast in their belief that this outlay is an investment that will pay them back several times over. But the one thing they may not be able to tolerate is Chatsworth leading Dobie into a life of crime as they believe he has done by printing counterfeit money with the small printing press he has brought with him.
