The Jewish Exorcist: Bornedal Dips Back into English Language for Derivative Genre Effort
Danish master Ole Bornedal already has a finicky history with the Us film industry, having the distinction of directing the remake of his own successful first film, Nightwatch (1994) to disappointing effect in 1997. Since then, he has made several unique titles in his native language, including the excellent 2007 film, Just Another Love Story. After a 2009 Straw Dogs-ish effort, Deliver Us From Evil, Bornedal announced plans for a couple English speaking projects, the first being a collaboration with Sam Raimi as producer, which ended up being The Possession. Unfortunately, Bornedal’s final product is derivative, predictable and unforgivably mediocre, despite a concerted effort that heroically strong-arms us into going along with it until devolving quickly into utter ridiculousness.

Film-maker, Ole Bornedal's (Nightwatch, Just Another Love Story) disturbing tale “begins in the sticks [where] the road only leads backwards and forwards” in “a snug haven for smug people”. A female narrator walks towards the camera introducing the lead characters in the small town Deliver Us From Evil is set.
All appears hunky-dory as we meet Bornedal's cast in Amelie style character intros, until we're told “Anna is an angel but her heart is too big – Anna is going to die soon”. The children's innocent questioning of their mother (“Is it Ok to hit evil people?”) is another subtle indication the mood will soon change.
After learning of Anna's imminent fate, Lars' (Jens Andersen) first appearance leaves us second-guessing how he might be involved as we watch him drunkenly driving a truck; miserably thinking about his now pregnant girlfriend, Scarlett (Pernille Vallentin). Our helpful narrator reaffirms he's unbalanced (“Tired of...

Koushik Ganguly’s Rang Milanti (Queen of hearts, 2011) is a youth-based film – and an interesting one. The basic plot revolves round the sweet and svelte Kamalika who is hopelessly in love with four young men – all friends themselves, and is not sure whom she will accept as her life-partner. So, she calls on all of them and conveys her dilemma. These four young men come from different social and psychological back-grounds and promise that who-ever is the ‘best’ fit will win over the girl, while the others will accept and continue to be friends.
Then comes this psychiatrist cum love doctor who advises Kamalika with testing his paramours with ten different situations, evaluating each and then moving towards the one with maximum points. As the film progresses, this unique ‘swayamvara’ turns and twists, taking us into a moderately enjoyable ride. Each of the ten phases are marked by names of...

Indian independent cinema's groundbreaking director Ketan Mehta's Rang Rasiya (Colours Of Passion) has won the Audience Award at the 2nd London Indian Film Festival (June 30 - July 12). Audiences voted for their favourite films across 28 screenings during the festival. Mehta said, "I am thrilled that my passion project has won the coveted audience award at the London Indian Film Festival. The premiere in the historic surroundings of the Victoria & Albert museum was wonderful and the interaction with London audiences was great. This award is the icing on the cake." The Satyajit Ray Foundation's Short Film Award for 2011 goes to a film that the judges felt was a well crafted, beautifully observed and honest 'day-in-the-life' portrait of a poor but aspirational young boy - "Amar" by filmmaker Andrew Hinton. Hinton said that he would share his £1,000 prize money with the boy. Jury member Menhaj Huda (director of "Kidulthood" and "Everywhere and Nowhere") presented the award.

Chicago – Ole Bornedal’s “Deliver Us From Evil” is a superb B-movie that occasionally threatens to become something more substantial. It has the misfortune of being saddled with one of the most overused titles of recent years, though I am certain no one will be confusing it with Amy Berg’s brutal yet vital 2006 documentary on sexual abuse in the Catholic Church. Bornedal’s film is brutally dark yet also darkly humorous.
From the very first fade-in to the last droll frame, the picture is awash in the desaturated colors and harshly lensed grime that are commonplace in Danish cinema, which seems to perpetually exist beneath a dark cloud. An oddly inviting narrator sets up the action in deceptively peaceful western Jutland, while hinting at its more malicious undertones. There’s a memorable early moment when devoted mother Pernille (Lene Nystrøm) attempts to teach her children that there are no evil people,...

Ole Bornedal has been quietly churning out quiet but compelling dramas just waiting for American audiences to really take note of him – which they should. He first caught the eye of American audiences when he remade his Danish hit Nightwatch with a new cast including Ewan McGregor, Nick Nolte, Josh Brolin, and Patricia Arquette. It wasn’t received as well here as it was in Denmark, though it was by no means a negative reception, from then on his films enjoyed a considerably smaller fanfare stateside. Even though his films aren’t getting large theatrical releases, his incredibly strong film Just Another Love Story should be reason enough for people to seek him out, and now that he’s added the brilliant Deliver Us from Evil to his lineup, there’s no reason for his name to remain in obscurity.

I came to a scary impasse when drafting up this week's column in that, in the past week, not much of note has been added to the Instant Netflix service. That is, unless you count 16 seasons of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers as noteworthy. So in deciding what to do I considered skipping this week and waiting for something worth writing about to be added. That would be a disservice to you, though, as I'm sure you're dying to be told what to queue!

Well, the 'baap' of all exclusive is here. I mean, the 'bad-boy' 'naughty' movie of the year Delhi Belly will be having its world premiere at this year's London Indian Film Festival (Liff) at Cineworld, Haymarket on 30 June. Delhi Belly will open the Liff this year. With a nod to Brit-gangster flicks such as Snatch, it tells the story of a group of hapless mates who end up being hunted by the local mafia after one of them accidently mixes up a smuggler's package with his stool sample (He ate some dodgy Tandoori chicken). The film reaches its climax in true heist style with a riot of mix-ups and high-speed chases, while unsuspecting English tourists duck for cover. Delhi Belly will have its worldwide release the next day, July 1. Other highlights of the festival include a special screening of Colours Of Passion at the V&A, homage to the revolutionary...

Here's an unlikely but very exciting combination:
Twitch fave director Ole Bornedal (Deliver Us From Evil, The Substitute, Just Another Love Story) has just signed on to direct The Dibbuk Box, a based-on-a-true story horror picture for producer Sam Raimi. On the surface it may appear that Bornedal and Raimi have radically different styles but, you know, if you compare Raimi's A Simple Plan to Bornedal's body of work, well, it's not all that hard to see how these two may mesh together.
Scripted by Juliet Snowden and Stiles White, the film is based on a La Times story about a family that believed they were being haunted by an evil spirit (the dibbuk) contained within a box sold on eBay. Production is slated to begin in January, so expect a late 2011 release for this one.

Acclaimed Danish filmmaker Ole Bornedal (Just Another Love Story, Deliver Us from Evil) is hitting Hollywood with a horror thriller called Dibbuk Box in the works at Sam Raimi's Ghost House Pictures. Heat Vision says Lionsgate is pushing this forward in hopes of shooting in January 2011. The film, written by Juliet Snowden & Stiles White (Boogeyman, Knowing), was inspired by this La Times article about a real-life haunted box. Dibbuk Box, in the vein of The Exorcist or The Shining, is about what happened after a family wound up with the haunted box, setting off a harrowing struggle to rid themselves of its evil curse. I'm already imagining something Paranormal Activity-like, where there's some found footage of this family taping the box that's doing crazy things. Not sure, I don't really see Ole Bornedal doing that, or maybe he's looking to do something unique. Raimi and a whole bunch...

With filmmakers everywhere suffering from budget cuts, our latest World Cinema column provides some handy tips for cash-strapped directors...
Cuts. More cuts. France is on strike again. Demonstrations. It's pretty depressing right now out there. And if it's bad for us, think what it must be for those poor struggling Hollywood filmmakers!
The Spider-Man reboot is a prime example, which has had its budget cut from Spider-Man 3's bloated $258 million to a paltry $80 million. How will they even feed themselves on set?! Maybe there will no longer be a choice between the salmon and the crab?

Cuts.

We've commented many time in the past year or two on the explosion of smart, gritty, noir infused crime films coming out of the Nordic region. For whatever reason there just seems to be something about those nations and crime film that just click together and stellar efforts such as Nicholas Winding Refn's Pusher films, Ole Bornedal's Just Another Love Story and Deliver Us From Evil, the international hit Millennium series and numerous others have been the result. And here's another to watch out for.

Oren Uziel will adapt Mandate Pictures "Just Another Love Story" which is a remake of the Danish thriller helmed by Ole Bornedal. Marc Webb ("500 Days of Summer") was attached last fall to helm the project after he is done with directing the new "Spider-Man" flick. The story tells of a photographer who pretends to be the boyfriend of a woman with amnesia. He is left to elude the real boyfriend who is out to get some revenge. Uziel wrote "Shimmer Lake" which went to Fox Atomic. Barry Josephson produces that film. Additionally, he wrote the screenplay for Kevin Tancharoen's "Mortal Kombat" short which recently debuited online.

"Arekti Premer Golpo" is being shown in the Panorama section of the Berlin festival headed by Wieland Speck, which emphasises gay themes in cinema.
The film also marks filmmaker Rituparno Ghosh's debut as an actor and all heads turned when he came resplendent in a burgundy turban, velvet choker, salwar kameez, and lipstick and kohl'd eyes to present the film.
This is the third time Rituparno Ghosh is presenting a film in Berlin.

Director: Ole Bornedal Starring: Anders W. Berthelsen - Jonas; Rebecka Hemse - Julia; Charlotte Fich - Mette 'Beautiful women and a mystery. Isn't that how all film noirs begin?' This observation, made early on by our leading man's confident, not-so-subtly clues us in on that which we are about to see. And although in itself it is more thriller than mystery, it certainly manages to more than hold its own in the film noir genre. The 2007 creation of Danish writer/director Ole Bornedal - due for DVD release in the UK this week - Just Another Love Story is a smartly made, well acted, and suspenseful piece, which combines an involving plot with an enjoyably dark sense of humour. The aforementioned leading man is Jonas (Anders W. Berthelsen), a crime-scene photographer who lives a pleasant if sanitised Ikea-esque lifestyle with his wife Mette (Charlotte Fich) and their two children.

A lot of quality directors such as Marc Webb are coming straight out of the world of music videos, which are kind of a form of visual storytelling, making the transition easier. Marc Webb’s first feature length film, 500 Days of Summer, which felt like the abridged and cluttered memory of a summer romance, was one of 2009’s breakout hits, and one of his next films (via The Hollywood Reporter) will be a remake of the 2008 Sundance Film Festival’s breakout hit, Just Another Love Story. You might think that Hollywood isn’t giving these remakes a lot of time anymore, but the original was actually a Danish thriller directed by Ole Bornedal, continuing the recent trend of foreign language remakes (I guess that Hollywood thinks that we need to feel like everything is tailored specifically for us). The Danish version is about a crime photographer who pretends to be...

One of the best films I saw this year was (500) Days of Summer -- the indie unromantic comedy that followed Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel's 500 fun, terrible, and dysfunctional days together. It was one of those rare and perfect examples of how diverging from the well-worn cinematic path can be a true breath of fresh air. And now director Marc Webb is gearing up for his next feature, which still looks into the world of love, but this time with an entirely different tone.
The Hollywood Reporter posts that Webb is currently in negotiations to helm a remake of the Danish thriller Just Another Love Story. News hit the trades last night that Marc Webb, director of this summer's sleeper hit 500 Days of Summer, is in negotiations to direct a remake of Ole Bornedal's Danish film, Just Another Love Story for Mandate pictures. Recently, Webb has also been in talks to direct a remake of Jesus Christ Superstar for Universal. I saw Just Another Love Story in Cinema Village, NYC, when it received an extremely limited theatrical release (i.e. only 2 theaters!) back in January 2009. The film tells the story of a family man who tries to do a good deed for an amnesiac accident victim, only to get entangled in her life in ways that become far too complicated (and possibly deadly?!) for him to handle. The film's title is extremely ironic; while it employs many of the tropes of romance films, it is primarily a noir film. And while much of the film...

While I didn't love 500 Days Of Summer like some people did, I really enjoyed it and almost immediately afterward began thinking about what director Marc Webb would do for his follow-up. 500 Days is such a confident directorial debut, I know he'll take a huge step forward with his next film. Turns out his next film is another love story. Ok, let me rephrase that: another Love Story. Webb will direct the English-language remake of the Danish thriller Just Another Love Story, which is...
