A franchise that should have ended long ago (or not even started)

"Meine Mutter traut sich was" is a German television film from 2020 that premiered last night actually and this is the third film so far from the "Meine Mutter" movies. John Delbridge was also the director on the second film and writer Christian Pfannenschmidt has been a part of this from the very beginning even, i.e. all three movies. Like the previous installments, this one here runs for 90 minutes approximately, but as for the two who made this, the duo I just mentioned, honestly I cannot say I am surprised this turned out such a weak watch overall because their body of work is packed with failure. Expected outcome. Pretty shocking to be honest and even if I think they should not be working at all given their (lack of) talent, I'd still say it is pretty sad that in their late 60s and a great deal of experience, they are still working on movies like this and apparently never managed to reach beyond garbage level in their long careers. At the same time, it is still pretty shameful they find work. As for the cast, they aren't any better, maybe even worse than the script and looking at how bad the screenplay actually is, this requires quite something in the negative sense. Then again, in 99% of the cases of Diana Amft being part of a movie (most of the time also in lead even just like here), it is extremely safe to say that this movie is going to flop hard quality-wise. She lacks range and versatility completely and all she has may be solid recognition value and her (very overrated) looks. Disgraceful she still gets cast for lead actors. I don't think she has given a single convincing performance in her now pretty long career. Admittedly, everybody else is just as bad here. Stephan Luca is a bit of a male equivalent of Amft and, if at all, only marginally better. Margarita Broich is an okay actress I think from what I have seen in other movies, but here it seems basically as if her story is over pretty much. All she does in here is share some wisdom with those in need. I guess they had nothing left for her after films one and two story-wise. Instead, the focus this time is on the male protagonist's parents and you could even say that the title (yes the film is as bad as the title suggests) is a quote by Luca's character.

That one and Amft's are preparing to marry here, but the groom's mother is not happy at all with the situation and she cannot stand Amft's character and prefers his son's former lover. So it is a bit of a "Schwiergermonster" plot we got here. One that is of course executed very poorly. There are several cringeworthy moments like for example when she gives that precious ring to her all of a sudden towards the end and that was honestly a bid joke. She was so against Amft's character for the entire film and completely out of nowhere we are supposed to believe that she does not only accept her all of a sudden, but appreciate her. One must be really dumb to accept this. And well, don't even get me started on the wedding and how it all escalatses there even physcially. They cannot be serious, but indeed they were. Disgraceful stuff. Also once again, this is a film that is really completely against males. The husband is depicted as a Casanova who sinks his face in female breasts one day before the wdding. Great coincidence too that the too soon-to-be spouses meet there at the very same place. His dad is depicted as a Casanova too who likes to flirt more than he should. Honestly, the only thing really missing as a bit of an argument and hige conflict between Amft's and Luca's characters. That would have been the negative icing on the cake. But don't worry, it still sucks really hard. Just take the former boyfriend who is still always around and who clearly still has an interest in Amft's character. Obviously, so we don't forget how desirable she is. And also we should not forget how much of a tough businesswoman she is, who does not need a man, but only wants one. Or how she is depicted as a victim of her constant mother-in-law's verbal attacks. And still she does not want her husband to confront his mother because that would only put her in an even worse light as she would be seen as a snitch. Oh well, it was clear from the beginning that this would be a horrible movie. The ending is also a prime example of a very rushed movie. It feels as if they somehow recognized that they are very close to the ending either in terms of the running time they were given and boom, just include a scene outside and have him give a ring to her and the film is over. Extremely poor editing too. Same about the music. The song that played at the exact start (together with the scene) made inevitably clear that this film is only destined for one outcome. Utter failure. Perhaps the worst 2020 movie I have seen so far and it is disgraceful that this is shown during prime time on one of the biggest channels here in Germany. And also that crap movies like this are financed through money that ARD forces to pay German citizens. It's not just those who want to see the films. Or those wwho pay voluntarily. EVERYBODY is obliged to pay for these garbage movies. An outrage. Highly not recommended, although I am pretty sure this is the kind of movie that will still be shown on television in the afternoon 10 years from now because there's always enough dumb people that do not see through this charade. Please don't be one of them.
