The business of French Postcards

Johann Schwarzer had been making dirty motion pictures for a couple of years when he turned out this rather amusing one, a full reel in length, about the travails of a photographer who specializes in feelthy pictures. We see the photographer posing his model in various states of undress and a mild payoff as a woman comes in to berate him and his customers for engaging in pornography.

The humor in the piece consists of the workaday attitude of the people involved, the uncaring manner in which the woman undresses and puts on shawls that accentuate her bosom.

Of course, the whole idea was to provide an excuse to show naked women. Just as the first paying sites on the Internet were the porn sites, so the first commercial home-grown movies in Austria were this sort. A surprising number of them survive in the Vienna film archives.... or perhaps it isn't so surprising.

Beim Fotografen was another "nudie" made by Austria's Johann Schwarzer

Warning: Spoilers
Once again on the Europa Film Treasures blog, I discovered another "nudie" from the silent era made by Austrian Johann Schwarzer. In this one, a photographer has a studio in which he has women come in and pose in the nude with occasional clothing. Then we see male customers come in and watch the results (with inserts of many of those posed pictures provided) just before a previous customer who refused to take off her clothes busts them all with the police in tow. The end. The last scene was pretty funny even now and I could have swore that woman who barged in was smiling as they all got out of the frame! With all that said, I highly recommend Beim Fotografen to anyone curious about adult film entertainment from Europe during the silent era.

Beim fotografen review

An early stag film in which a somewhat sleazy studio photographer attempts to persuade female customers to disrobe completely for 'artistic' poses. Not in the slightest bit erotic despite some full-frontal nudity. Of curiosity value, but nothing more.

At the Photographer's (1908)

*** (out of 4)

This Saturn Films production tells the story of a perverted, short man who lures women into his photo shot hoping that he can get them naked for pictures. When he tries this stunt on the wrong woman she later returns to the store with the police. This Australian film once again was made to show female nudity but out of the four films I've seen from this director/company owner, this one here actually features the least amount of nudity even though it's twice as long as the other films. There's still plenty of nudity to be seen but for the most part it seems the director was trying to tell a funny story and he does so pretty much. The film moves very well even though most of the stuff is done with one long take and only edits very briefly at the very edit. The camera doesn't move around too much but once again there's a fun nature about the entire thing.
