New Delhi, March 6 (Ians) Last year, the imposition of lockdown put a pause on the release of film music, pushing people towards the independent/non-film music, which in the pre-Covid times was, arguably, the secondary source of listening to music for most Indians.
A year later the scene has changed. Music channels, the streaming space as well as social media is overflowing with non-Bollywood music. Artistes would tell you they need to continue making music. The music labels affirm there is always an audience for art and entertainment, never mind lockdown. Both ways, artistes confined to their homes got busy creating music on laptops. The outcome was a sizeable repertoire of original sound.
"I think an artiste never stops making art if it is truly what they live for. I think constantly creating new music is like second nature for me and even if nobody hears it,...

New Delhi, March 6 (Ians) Rajkummar Rao has time and again proved that he is one of the best actors in Hindi cinema. Be it his performance as the strong-willed lawyer in Shahid, a dreaded terrorist in Omerta, a gullible boy in Stree or the naive Pritam in Bareilly Ki Barfi, the actor has raised his bar with every new role.
"The journey has been pretty overwhelming. I never expected this to happen. I always wanted to work of course and that's why I invested so much time on training and came to the city with no background or backbone, and with very little money. From there to here it is still like a dream to me, but I don't sit back and think about it," Rajkummar told Ians.
The actor likes to lives in the moment.
"I live each day as it comes so I just enjoy each and every moment.

Mumbai, Feb 25: Varun Sharma calls his next release Roohi the crazier sister of the 2018 Rajkummar Rao starrer Stree.
After Stree released in 2018, there has been a slew of horror comedies including Laxmii, and upcoming projects as Phone Bhoot, Bhoot Police, and Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2, besides Roohi. Varun Sharma, however, is not scared of the competition.
"There is no fear as such. It is a new genre that got explored widely through Stree and we feel that Roohi is Stree's much crazier sister and the genre is widely accepted and people got exposed to and they liked it and I feel a lot of other films also. Whichever content is liked by people at the end of the day is (going to be made)," said Varun Sharma.
He added, "We really hope that the audience really enjoys (Roohi) as much as we enjoyed making the film. I mean there is nothing to fear about.

It has been 30 years since Akshay Kumar entered Bollywood, and to say his journey has been eventful would be an understatement. From outsider and struggler to National Award-winning superstar has been a long road, and Akshay says entering the industry is easier than maintaining one's position and and coping up with everything.
"The challenge lies in maintaining yourself. Maintaining yourself in the industry is a big challenge. You will not believe that entering the film industry is still easier, but to maintain yourself in the industry and to keep up and cope up with everything going on, and be there in the industry, is a very difficult job," Akshay told Ians, reflecting on his journey.
Over the years, Akshay has held on to the advice his father once gave him, as he surged ahead in his career.

You were just beginning to get excited about new-age Bollywood horror after cutting-edge stuff as Stree and Tumbbad. Then came Laxmii, and now Durgavati -- as rude reminder that Bollywood horror still has some way to go.
Durgavati, crafted almost frame to frame from the 2018 Telugu-Tamil horror drama Bhagmathie, comes across as cliched melodrama more than next-level scare fest as it tries peddling horror with a message. The outcome is neither scary nor relevant commentary, for the societal ills the film tries highlighting are far too familiar as subject material on the mainstream screen to leave an impact.
Writer-director G Ashok's narrative starts off with a dozen-odd rare idols being stolen in a span of around six months, even as brutal killings take place. Minister Ishwar Prasad (Arshad Warsi), who is under suspicion, announces he will nab the culprits or retire from politics.
Cbi officer Satakshi Ganguly (Mahie Gill) is given charge of the case.

Moving away from regular horror, Bollywood is lately warming up to the idea of serving scares with a spot of humour. The horror comedy as a genre is suddenly in vogue among mainstream Hindi filmmakers.
The genre existed in the Hindi film industry for ages -- the old classic "Bhoot Bangla" and recent releases such as "Bhul Bhulaiyaa", "Bhootnath", "Go Goa Gone" and "Stree" come to mind. These films, however, were one-off cases. What is happening now is that Bollywood filmmakers have suddenly taken interest in the genre of horror comedy in a way that it seems like the genre is here to stay. Importantly, the new crop of films serve the funny scares with a new-age spin and a message.
We look at a few horror comedy films that are all set to hit the screens.
Bhoot Police
The film stars Saif Ali Khan, Jacqueline Fernandez, Yami Gautam and Arjun Kapoor.

Akshay Kumar is one of Bollywood’s most bankable stars, having appeared in more than 140 films and amassing a staggering 47 million Instagram followers. He’s making the leap to his first streaming project with Amazon series “The End.”
Kumar’s deal with Amazon shows just how eager streaming players are for international A-listers as they keep expanding their slates to compete with traditional movie studios. The streaming giant in 2019 enrolled actor Manoj Bajpayee for “The Family Man,” while Abhishek Bachchan appeared in the series “Breathe: Into the Shadows,” but Kumar is by far Amazon’s greatest partnership out of India to date.

The streaming giant in 2019 enrolled actor Manoj Bajpayee for “The Family Man,” while Abhishek Bachchan appeared in the series “Breathe: Into the Shadows,” but Kumar is by far Amazon’s greatest partnership out of India to date.

Laxmii (Disney-Hotstar)
Starring Akshay Kumar,Kiara Advani
Directed by Raghava Lawrence
For my money and time, Akshay Kumar is the most engaging A-lister in Bollywood right now. He can be loads of fun when he wants to be. He can also slip in a social message when the need arises. And he has done the needful in the past with flying colours.
This time in Laxmii the takeaway is zero. If the film intends to amplify the debate on the transgender community then it fails miserably. It is abominably loud, largely shrieky and over-the-top with plenty of physical comedy which involves talented actors like Rajesh Verama and Ayesha Reza Mishra falling, jumping, sliding , scooping and whooping as though they were at a rowdy halloween party after a few pegs too many.
Everyone in the film behaves as though on unprescribed drugs, none more so than Akshay Kumar who hasn’t...

Actor-producer Tusshar Kapoor says there will be no Diwali bash at his place this year. The reason is his father, yesteryears star Jeetendra, was a close friend of actor Rishi Kapoor, who passed away earlier this year.
"Unlike every year, there will be no big Diwali bash at our residence because of the sad demise of our very dear family friend, Rishi Kapoor ji, and of course the pandemic," said Tusshar.
Rather, for the Kapoors the festival of lights is all about spending time with family this year.
"It's festivities and celebrations with just the family. I have been pretty occupied with our film 'Laxmii' which was released yesterday. Also my son is on vacation, so I am spending a lot of time of with him," said Tusshar.

New Delhi, Nov 10 (Ians) This year, Diwali fervour will stream onto your Ott screens rather than come alive on the big screen, owing to the ongoing pandemic. An explosion of new content to keep you hooked is being readied to drop on digital platforms, to mark the festival of lights.
"Post re-opening of theatres, there will be a settling period for viewers to gain trust, and confidence on the safety levels, to encourage them to step out to watch their favourite big event movie. OTTs are the best alternative in the current situation. Hence, viewership numbers may witness an upward trend on Ott platforms (during the festive season)," Chandrashekar Mantha, Partner, Deloitte India, told Ians.
In the same vein, trade analyst Girish Johar told Ians: "When it comes to the big screen, Diwali (festive season) is out of the question. So the next window in which there can be a...

Every now and then, it seems, Akshay Kumar cannot resist giving in to the urge to churn out boring humour. The last time he did it was in Diwali last year, with Housefull 4. He is back this Diwali with a film that would make Housefull 4 seem like a classic.
The problem with Laxmii is not that it is mindless. The problem is the film is just not funny enough, despite playing to the gallery. Director Raghava Lawrence, who makes his Bollywood debut with this film, collaborates with Farhad Samji in a bid to recreate his 2011 Tamil hit Muni 2: Kanchana. What may have seemed funny nine years ago clearly fails to make the cut today.
Uh, yes -- there's the social message part.

Mumbai, Nov 7 (Ians) Bollywood superstar Akshay Kumar on Saturday faced flak from a section of netizens after he posted a photo that shows him wearing a red bindi on the forehead. The actor had used a filter on social media to render the effect.
The action was meant as a promotional stunt for his upcoming film "Laxmii", but it did not go down well with a section of netizens who found it "cheap".
In a black and white photograph he posted on his verified Instagram and Twitter accounts, Akshay sports a big red bindi. "Maine toh laga li hai pyaar aur samanta ki Laal Bindi (I have worn the red bindi as a mark of love and equality). Now it's your turn to join me using 'Ab Hamari Baari Hai' filter on Instagram as a symbol of love and acceptance for the third gender!"
Social media users, however, were not entirely happy.

Flix FlashbackDespite the long gap between releases, the ‘Muni’ franchise is extremely successful in Tamil cinema. Sowmya RajendranThe Muni series, directed by actor-choreographer Raghava Lawrence, is among the most successful franchises in Tamil cinema. The first film was released in 2007, the second in 2011 and the last in 2019. Despite the long gaps in between, the franchise has stayed popular with audiences, spawning several more attempts at the horror comedy genre. If box-office collection reports are to be believed, the 2019 instalment collected over Rs 100 crore. The Hindi remake of the second in the series, Kanchana, will be released as Laxmii (it was first titled Laxmmi Bomb) on Disney+ Hotstar on November 9. The lead role, which was played by Raghava himself in the original, is being reprised by Akshay Kumar. Raghava will also be making his directorial debut in Hindi with this film. Made nine years ago, Kanchana may not have aged well in all aspects.

New Delhi, Oct 24 (Ians) Ahead of Dussehra, which emphasises on the celebration of the triumph of good over evil, actors have shared their favourite films that define the theme of the festival.
For veteran actress Himani Shivpuri, it's the 1998 film Salman Khan-starrer "Bandhan".
"'Bandhan' is easily one of my favourites as the title itself talks of eternal bonds. It is an excellent example of a movie that shows truth always prevails. For all those have not seen this movie, the premise of the story was how Jackie Shroff's character falls prey to selfish motives and remarries. This leads to him spoiling his relations with his ex-wife and his brother-in-law. He realises much later the importance of relationships and the mistakes he made all along," the actress, who also featured in the movie, told Ians.

Mumbai, Oct 16 (Ians) A hashtag demanding the boycott of the upcoming Akshay Kumar-starrer horror comedy, Laxmmi Bomb, has been trending all through Friday.
The reasons for trend are multiple. While one section of netizens are alleging stereotypical representation of the transgender community, others feel the film's title is derogatory as it insults the Hindu Goddess Laxmi. Still others accuse the film of promoting love jihad. This is because Akshay Kumar's character in the film is reportedly titled Asif while Kiara Advani plays a girl named Priya.
"#BoycottLaxmmiBomb for unfair and stereotypical representation of trans community. stop this religious angle to discriminate art mediums," tweeted a user on Friday.
"This would be called a communal film and will be banned if the title is Mohammad Bomb. If guy is Hindu and girl is Muslim. Just asking. #BoycottLaxmmiBomb," shared another user.
"Can You Rename LuxmiBomb To Salma Bomb or Ayesha Bomb?...

I confess I am disappointed with the trailer of Laxmmi Bomb. It tries so hard to be funny,it hurts! It makes the same mistake that Priyadarshan made in his worst comedies. It thinks the harder the characters scream the more amused the audience would get.And if they run helter-skelter around the house , the plot I sure to find the comic cosmos.
Good that we will see this film indoors during Diwali. Maybe it will drown the sound of exploding crackers outside. In the meanwhile you can always pump up the volume in the trailer when your wife is arguing about the unattended bills or the unkempt lawn or that long due haircut(hers or yours).
Laxmmi Bomb is the noisiest entertainer of the year. Coolie No 1 will just have to find another way to get our attention. Maybe Varun Dhawan mouthing one line that makes sense would do the trick.
