Not my Kind of movie.
neji-san19 May 2022
I just don't like those slice of life drama movies, they are boring and never add anything new. Here something felt different I really loved how the movie started and how it ended. If that was a korean movie people would love it. In this movie nothing good happens. You have a guy returning home and from the beginning to the end, you like him and you root for him, there has to be a meaning for what he did... but in the end its just life that happened. I really enjoyed the movie Soundtrack and the cast were perfect, especially jayden he always felt like the Angel sitting on your shoulder with the right words.

Great cast but not much more

Warning: Spoilers
Started out ok but never gets going. Just kinda stays at the same stagnant pace throughout the entire film. I liked the lead actor but he doesn't get to showcase his acting until the church scene towards the end. We also never learn why he killed the Grandmother. Was it an accident? Was it in cold blood? We never get an answer. I literally had to rewind the film after it was over to see if I missed something. I didn't, it never gets explained. I also didn't understand why the granddaughter just sorta forgives him and starts a friendship. This guy killed a family member and she starts hanging out with him a few days after he gets out of prison. I didn't get it. The director definitely played it safe with this one. We've all watched this type of film before. Guy returns home from jail to confront the demons of his past. I'm not saying it was a bad film. It just wasn't very original and too slow for my taste. Basic 5 star film.

Slow

Kathy Bates is there... but not really. There is nothing new here to learn and it's not that entertaining. It really has that low budget feel thought-out the film without any thing for you to say "but that's OK". Jake McLaughlin's acting and look are good... but that alone does not carry the film.

A lovely film

Watched it on DirecTV tonight because it interested me and I saw that it was leaving the platform soon. I am so glad I saw it. A very accomplished "little" film about life and death and everything in-between. Highly recommended.

Forget the bad reviews--this is a must watch.

Warning: Spoilers
Don't listen to the bad reviews, they all think they're Siskel & Ebert, but without the brains. This is a phenomenal film. It's a heartwarming story of forgiveness and love. The characters are believable and the acting is spot on. Jake McLaughlin does a particularly good job as Marvin. If I have any problem at all with this movie, it's that there are quite a few unanswered questions: why did Marvin murder the old woman? What is the history between Wade and Marvin? Why doesn't Marvin's mother hate Wade? Why did Marvin's brother commit suicide? Just a lot of unresolved things that seemed important but were never addressed. Other than that, this is a great movie.

One in who knows how many

Very powerful movie. Very, very simple, yet very deep and strong. All that a movie should be. I really liked making subtitles for it, and remembered in every second why I love to watch movies. Among so so many empty, boring, repetitive and predictive movies, this one really moves you and gives you strong emotions. Jake McLaughlin is brilliant, I felt all the complex emotions all the way through the movie. Very interested to watch other movies with these actors and director. Thank you for the very pleasant job that I had these days, I only could wish that more movies like this one comes my way.

Reality on the Mark

I was quite stunned to see that this movie was written and directed by Franka Potente. I only know Miss Potente from her role in the Jason Bourne movies. I had no idea her talent and artistry extended into writing and directing.

I am a strong believer that there should be more women directors. This movie was a solid look at reality, and what can really play out when a former prisoner returns home. The reactions to his return were true, they were believable, and I absolutely loved this movie.

Miss Potente is a skilled director and I look forward to seeing more of her work on the big screen.

Kathy Bates always turns in good performances, "Home" is no exception. Jake McLaughlin's work is powerful. A very good and solid movie.

A gem of a movie. Where is the publicity?

Warning: Spoilers
What a jewel of a film! Performances are excellent across the board. Jake McLaughlin gives a standout performance as a man returning home after an incarceration that began in his youth, burdened by a history defined by violence and regret. There are few expressions of absolution or redemption from his wounded community. His unrewarded perseverence is, at times, painful to watch. Cathy Bates is a woman defeated by a lifetime of loss, who can still muster the energy to fight for her child.

Franka Potente directed this meaningful film. She is a very good actor, but I had no idea she was also a director. Kudos to her for this intimate look at life, loss, and tragedy overcome.
