A slow Italian film
Erik_Stone16 April 2022
It's a well done movie. It is slow, so be prepared for that.

I'm an actual, American man, and this movie did make me feel like a little Italian girl from the period that it is set in. That's pretty good.

The casting was impeccable.

There is a lot more that I would like to write about this film, but no spoilers from me.

Indipendent - mostly positive - impression
Ladiloque31 May 2021
Subpar photography of the breathtaking Favignana, weak direction, nice music but altogether just a technically forgettable production. Acting included: we have both good and mediocre performances.

Overall the story - a family drama seen through the eyes of a child that becomes woman and based on a novel - works instead very well.

I thought of writing a review anticipating that there would be none for such an under the radar recent production. Funnily - but not really - there were a lot, but mostly are evidently written by people involved with the movie. Frankly it's an unexpectedly nice watch (maybe accelerated at 1,25x), but not really a 9 or 10.

Wow...moved to tears

This movie is so powerful.

Yes, it's slow in spots, but you must connect with the characters to enjoy it.

I found it amazing. The little girl comes to terms with her situation, her growing into adulthood, and a certain relative she shouldn't have trusted. In the end, she learns the truth about her family's 'other side' and seeks the strength to move on.

I loved it.

What a movie!

What a movie! He starts slowly with a bit of drama, rolls and then runs into the storm !!!

The film deals with a lot of female characters and an insight into the destinies they carry.

A lovely and intriguing film

A great coming of age story set in a stunningly filmic location, "Picciridda" is a cheerful, life-affirming film, a disarming mixture of charm and brutality. The beauty of Favignana, an island off western Sicily, in the turquoise Mediterranean Sea is simply extraordinary. Licata did a wonderful work with his actors. Picciridda is a strong debut. Highly recommended!

Superb, almost austere, presentation of joy, sorrow and pain
msghall18 June 2022
Director Licata weaves a human tale that takes the viewer through a roller coaster of genuine emotions. Never cloying or sentimental, this film doesn't cater to its audience, instead drawing you in with an unflinching portrayal of human lives intertwined in joy, despair, love and indignity.

The actors are all natural and relatable, earning their way into your psyche. The director doesn't follow the Hollywood approach of talk, talk, talk but instead lets the faces, the streets, the ocean, the sky tell the tale, giving the audience an almost palpable sense of being alive. Best of all, I watched it two days ago and I'm still thinking - and feeling - about it.

Visually stunning... That's About It
ivanfreire1-916-16429820 March 2023
Not subtle, not complex, not well written, not new.

The relationship between the main character and her grandma evolves in a way that doesn't feel very natural (thing just happen and you have to accept it). Everything else is just one-layered.

There is nothing original about this movie... same old story that has been told millions of times (at least they are competent in many formal aspects in this one, what they lack is creativity).

The movie is slow, partially because it needs to be, partially because does not have much to say.

The viewer after 100 minutes watching it has absolutely nothing to reflect on - it feels that you are being informed about a reaaly boring individual story of suffering.

A masterpiece debut by Licata and his cast
Sasha_Lauren3 November 2022
Wow! Now this is what I call a film! An artistic masterpiece, the debut of Italian director Paola Licata, this story set on the picturesque island of Favignana off the coast of Sicily gifts us with the type of storytelling where a shot of a foot in the sand speaks volumes. The tale follows Lucia, a girl heading into puberty, as she is left behind on the island when her loving parents and little brother go to France without her. The parents need to be out of the poor island economy to get work, and Lucia is left behind for practical financial reasons, lack of accomodation, and to keep her grandmother company.

On Favignana, Lucia's extended family lives close and abounds in painful secrets that are the cause of estrangement between Lucia's grandmother and her great aunt. I nearly gave up watching during a point where someone was getting a beating, but ultimately glad I watched to the end. There is something so earthy, real, and heartbreaking about the non-sentimental tale of abandonment, friendship, betrayal, confusion, courage, and understanding that unfolds illuminated by the brown, teels, muted reds, ochre, and tan color palate.

Alone With Her Dreams, a brilliant art House movie about the difficult and complex relationship bewteen Lucia and her grandmother, may rip your heart out of you. If this sort of film appeals to you, then by all means, watch this one. It has stuck with me days after viewing it.

Soooo good
sandisunshine-918294 April 2022
I loved it. Gritty but so beautifully made. It was suggested to me on Amazon Video but it wouldn't let me leave a review there it so I came on here to make sure other people who don't mind a departure from American melodrama to gritty with beautiful scenery and lots of village tapestry would be able to see my review. A refreshing change of pace from all the stuff that's pushed at us nowadays.
