Jon Stewart was back on The Daily Show and compared Donald Trump to Mr. Magoo as the hush money trial continues.
Michael Cohen wrapped up his testimony and admitted he had stolen from the Trump Organization, which prompted Stewart to compare the former Potus to the animated character.
“How lucky is Donald Trump?” Stewart said. “Donald Trump is like a corruption Mr. Magoo. He’s just stumbling around, quid pro quo-ing, metal beams falling all around him [and] gets out completely unscathed.”
Mr. Magoo is a fictional character who appeared in the Upa animated series Mister Magoo, voiced by Jim Backus. The character is an elderly, wealthy retiree who gets into comical situations and, through sheer luck, always finds himself unharmed.
Trump is on trial and faces 34 felony charges of falsifying business records to conceal other crimes. All of this was to payments made to adult film star Stormy Daniels to silence her amid the 2016 U.

In this edition of Canon Of Film, we look at the James Dean classic, ‘Rebel Without a Cause‘. For the story behind the genesis of the Canon, you can click here.
Rebel Without A Cause (1955)
Director: Nicholas Ray
Screenplay: Stewart Stern; adapted by Irving Shulman, from a story by Nicholas Ray
When I was 12-years old, I don’t know exactly what it was that possessed me to do so, but I sat down one night and watched ‘Rebel Without a Cause.’ I was into old-time 50s nostalgia, such as ‘Grease,’ and ‘Happy Days,’ and decided to see this movie and the James Dean persona/image that influenced many of that decade. Yet, what I found was something else that day. the realization that a film could reveal hidden messages, meanings, and metaphors that aren’t just what the film is about. I remember it distinctly, Jim Backus, who you...

June Foray, the voice of Rocky The Flying Squirrel, Granny from Looney Tunes, and literally hundreds of other beloved animated characters, has died. Heralded as “the first lady” and the “queen” of voice acting, Foray’s career in film and TV stretched for 71 years and more than 300 credits, embodying everyone from Magica De Spell to Dorothy from The Wizard Of Oz. As reported by Variety, Foray was 99.
Originally working in radio—and on comedy albums with Stan Freberg—Foray broke into film in 1950, when she voiced Lucifer the cat in Disney’s Cinderella. From there, it would probably be easier to list the beloved animated series she didn’t appear on: Her versatile voice showed up in The Flintstones, Peter Pan, Mister Magoo, dozens of Looney Tunes shorts—with director Chuck Jones supposedly once noting that “June Foray is not the female Mel Blanc, Mel Blanc ...

The icon-establishing performances Marilyn Monroe gave in Howard Hawks’ Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953) and in Billy Wilder’s Some Like It Hot (1959) are ones for the ages, touchstone works that endure because of the undeniable comic energy and desperation that sparked them from within even as the ravenous public became ever more enraptured by the surface of Monroe’s seductive image of beauty and glamour. Several generations now probably know her only from these films, or perhaps 1955’s The Seven-Year Itch, a more famous probably for the skirt-swirling pose it generated than anything in the movie itself, one of director Wilder’s sourest pictures, or her final completed film, The Misfits (1961), directed by John Huston, written by Arthur Miller and costarring Clark Gable and Montgomery Clift.
But in Don’t Bother to Knock (1952) she delivers a powerful dramatic performance as Nell, a psychologically devastated, delusional, perhaps psychotic young woman apparently on...

I’m a big fan of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. I try to read it every Christmas, I watch multiple versions of it during the holiday season (including a half hour animated version starring Mister Magoo), and in my acting days I performed in the annual theater production of it at Chicago’s Goodman Theater. For the record, I played in the all-important parts of Mr. Lean, Fred’s friend number 3, dancing man, and ensemble.
Coming across a mystery called The Humbug Murders – An Ebenezer Scrooge Mystery by L.J. Oliver, I was quickly drawn in. Not without some hesitation; the notion of Dickens’ notorious miser acting as a detective rattled my chains a bit. Still, I decided to give it a chance.
For the most part, it works. L.J. Oliver is a pen name for Scott Ciencin and Elizabeth Wilson, both of whom are experienced authors. Sadly,...

There are a lot of traditions that come along with the holidays. Eating too much, spending too much, drinking too much, saying too much to that family member you hate once drunk, decorating too much. Anything that ends with us hating ourselves come New Year’s? We are all over it like ornament glitter on Goddamn Everything. For decades, one tradition that has taken root is gathering around the light of the television to watch Christmas specials. As such, certain ones have risen to the top of our frenetic desire to Christmas Harder. Anything claymation from the 1960s (Rudolph, Frosty, Santa Claus), the Charlie Brown Christmas Special, and somehow the California Raisins are among the most instantly recognized animated holiday shows. But they’re far from the only ones. Below, I’ve collected several of the more obscure bursts of nostalgia available for your pleasure on YouTube. Sadly, both The...

Tim here. December means two things: one of these is frantically trying to keep up with year-end awardage and last-minute qualifying releases, and we have that well-covered this month at the Film Experience. But it also means forcible nostalgia and hankering back to the traditions of childhood, and in this mode, we come to a very important anniversary this weekend. It was 50 years ago, on December 6, 1964, that NBC first aired the hourlong Rank/Bass special Rudolph the Red-Nose Reindeer, and thus created one of the most durable pop culture artifacts of the Christmas season.
Rudolph wasn't the first TV Christmas special, nor even the first one that was animated: Mister Magoo’s Christmas Carol had beaten to the latter punch by two years. Its enormous success meant that follow-ups were inevitable, so Rudolph was merely at the forefront of quite a large number of animated tales of finding the...

Comedy is subjective, we all know that. Comedy from back in the 40’s and 50’s? That’s an acquired taste. I grew up with Mr. Magoo reruns on television and even though back in the late 80’s and early 90’s, I understood that the animation was antiquated, I still enjoyed the hell out of the guy’s adventures. It also helped that I grew up watching It’s A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World with my dad, which also starred the amazing Jim Backus. When I heard him speak, I knew that he was Mr. Magoo. It made sense. Playing the drunken pilot in that amazing film while also playing the bumbling, stumbling Magoo just instantly clicked for me.

Oh by George! It's a good day for fans of Jim Backus' near-sighted animated character, Quincy Magoo. Shout Factory has released Mr. Magoo: The Television Collection, 1960-1977 on DVD and it includes more than 30 hours of cartoons.
In addition to the previously released Mr. Magoo Show, the set includes all of the episodes of The Famous Adventures of Mr. Magoo and What's New Mr. Magoo. It's the first time that the latter two shows have been released in whole on DVD.
The set also includes the special Uncle Sam Magoo TV movie and featurettes which include interviews with animation historians and artists who worked on the shows.
Here's a short trailer about the new set.

Here's a list of what will be shown during the last two weekends of the month. See you at The Silent Movie Theatre, 611 North Fairfax Avenue, Los Angeles, California 90048; for more info call (323) 655-2520.
October 23rd / Macabre shown with Mr. Sardonicus
Macabre - 6:00pm
Macabre is a taut little race-the-clock picture about a kidnapped doctor's daughter and the his panicked attempts to save her! This was Castle’s first foray into horror (though he’d made some fine noir thrillers), and there’s the extra pleasure of the ever-jovial Jim Backus (Mr. Howell from “Gilligan’s Island”, and the voice of Mr. Magoo) sliming it up in a...

Marley was dead, but he’s certainly the Energizer Bunny of holiday fantasy. He just keeps coming back, dragging along clanging chains and enormous lockboxes, always ready to haunt his former business partner Ebenezer Scrooge (It’s for Scrooge’s own good! What does Marley get out of it? Peace of mind?). And here he is doing it again in theaters now as fantasy filmmaker Robert Zemeckis unveils a Performance Capture-cg animated version of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol with Jim Carrey as Scrooge and all three holiday Ghosts. See my review here.
Dickens originally wrote the story in 1843, and given all the various stage, radio, film and TV versions of it since then (both official and ripoff), it’s certainly one of the most adapted tales ever. Even Dickens adapted it, tailoring a one-man version which he read on stage in London engagements and on tour (including here in...
