Enjoyable film for the young bucks
kennyomegamanx15 April 2020
As a fan of "sports entertainment," I thought this was an entertaining watch that should keep the little ones giggling from start to finish.

The story revolves around a young boy who finds a magical luchador mask that allows him to have superhuman strength. Rather than fighting crime like many movies we've already seen, he chooses to enter a wrestling tournament to not only live out his dream, but also, and more importantly, win prize money to help his financially burdened father.

The kids will enjoy the cameos by WWE Superstars, endless cheesy elements, puns and the cartoonish heroes/villains. Parents will enjoy the moral ending of the story and lack of violence (the "fighting" scenes are extremely goofy and exaggerated to the point where they can't be attempted at home).

There are things that adults could criticize such as storyline, special effects and acting, but these are to be expected for what is essentially a straight-to-video children's title. Overall, it is a fun movie for little wrestling fans.

Like Mike but for WWE
briannabowling19 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
As far as my 8 year old WWE-obsessed son is concerned, this is peak cinema. He doesn't know many kids his age who are into wrestling, so for him, watching other kids who share his passions was a pure delight.

As his millennial mother, this was basically like watching the movie Like Mike, but with a wrestling lens over it. Both movies include magical sports equipment that enable a child with parental issues to compete at a professional level with real-life famous sports heroes. That said, when I was a kid, I loved Like Mike.

The acting was tolerable, and the grandma character was super likeable. The plot/writing/humor, however, left much to be desired. Did I enjoy the movie? No. Did I enjoy watching my son enjoying the movie? Yes. And for that reason, it gets a pass.

Maybe avoid if not a WWE fan
swowen-8412817 May 2020
This Movie is about an 11 year old boy called Leo Thompson (played by Seth Carr). He has a passion for WWE and hopes one day that he could possibly even make it and become one of its Superstars. Leo and his 2 best friends Riyaz (played by Aryan Simhadri) and Caleb (played by Glen Gordon) are not what you call "the popular kids" and do seem to catch the attention of Trevor (played by Josh Zaharia), the school bully. One of the times that Trevor is chasing Leo, Leo stumbles across an old wrestling mask like the ones worn by the Mexican Lucha Libre. This is the point things change for Leo. I do think that the target audience for this one is children and teens and obviously WWE fans, the children and teens will get the funny parts, the silliness that adults may not, the messages that are within the movie are plain for all to see and maybe relate to. If you do not like WWE, then i think that you maybe shouldn't watch this movie. For you WWE fans, with it being an official WWE title, then you do see some of their Superstars making appearances.

Just because it's for kids doesn't give it an excuse to be so damn lazy
confrank11 April 2020
This was the last, and debatably worst, project I was in as a background actor. For 4 days, I filmed the climax cringing and shaking my head at every bit of this brutal sequence I was participating in. The filmmakers know their main audience is kids who are WWE fans, and if they fall for lame WWE narratives they can get away with an excruciatingly lazy story and forced conflict that does these actors no service. The obvious wire work on all the fighting was cheap and sucked too. Are we really this easy to please with a slapdash feature length WWE advertisement when we're 10 years old?

Amongst it all, I can safely say the hip, grandma character is the worst goddamn thing you'll have to sit through. "you just got Grandma'd" will go down as the single worst piece of dialogue of 2020. Thank you Ken Marino for giving us just one funny character amidst the cringe.

Anyways, don't watch this. Maybe this quarantine shutting down all film productions is exactly what this industry needs to get its head on straight.

painfully bad

Avoid this film, watching it is literally painful as it is so bad. So bad that it makes me think i would be a good director as i could definitively done a better job of this.

Not a good film, even if it's a kids movie
devarshi-870683 May 2020
This movie is riddled with cliches, full of smell jokes and the acting is just horrible. I raise the score to a 3 just because of that Spider-Man reference.

Otherwise it would be a 1.

This film is utter garbage
ukhammer1987-112 April 2020
Unfortunately this movie really sucks. An idea with great potential spoiled by stupid effects and stupid comical aspects that just didn't fit in. Ultimately it just about sums up the WWE nowadays. Stuffed this just like they stuff up almost every week.

It's horrible -
casablancavic18 April 2020
It's just plain horrible - even for a kid's movie.

To think that several writers struggled to piece this together is quite sad...and then to think that a director read this as well as producers and thought that this would be good enough to invest money on it was ever more sad.

For anybody over the age of 4, this is only doing damage to their brains - and to anybody under 4, their brains haven't developed yet.

This is lazy writing and directing and acting at best - and worse, it's an insult to children.

I spent 15 minutes trying to maintain sanity while the kids were in the room beside me and I had to walk away - or I would have just complained about how stupid this all was and how inept the producers were to not want to develop it any more than they did.

This is great for newborns and that is about it...otherwise, this just sucks really bad.

Feel good and decent family comedy
roger-99-17159912 April 2020
A kid who's a fan of the wrestling tournament culture feels like an outcast with the constant bullying in school. Meanwhile he lives a steady relationship at home, despite the absence of his mother. His mechanic father struggles to spend more time with him, and his Instagram icon-in-the-making grandmother does everything possible to discipline him. In one of his attempts to escape his school's opponents, he finds an old magical mask giving him super wrestling power which leads him to the covet professional tournament filled with evil competitor, specially a monster-like giant and his ambitiously greed agent. A refreshing and funny family comedy about finding your voice and strength, the film is highly recommended for all ages. At times silly but tender and efficient, it also looks at innocence and friendship values through the kid's interaction with his two best friends and his crush. Finally a decent production made for laughter without any buttocks jokes or other similarities. Fast paced, well conceived and convincingly performed, it's a feel good family gem.

Wrestle Mania
kosmasp15 June 2021
Yes the movie is silly ... yes I understand if you can't get over that fact. I also understand if you just love it, because you are a big fan of WWE or some of the Wrestlers portrayed here. Even if it is Miz ... kidding aside and not at all jealous that he is with Maryse that son of a gun ... ok let's start over and say kidding really aside now ... maybe.

Seriously though, this is for wrestling fans but also for the family. It is simple minded or simple told or whatever you want to call it. It is not complex and it is meant to get a younger audience excited. So watch it with a grain of salt and/or a little one that might get excited about that. And you'll have fun as well.

It's for kids. Can't be too harsh.
iamshawnieb13 April 2020
It's essentially the same plot as better movies like Rookie of the Year or Like Mike but with half the budget and way more reliance on brand recognition. There's some heart in the film and a few decent jokes. If watching with kids you could do a lot worse. Just don't expect an enduring family tradition to begin.

It was fine for a WWE film.
luke217713 April 2020
It was fine for a WWE film that is aimed at a younger demographic. I thought that the didn't make the main character, Leo, very likable at all. I was far more interested in Erica and his other friends (i.e. the surprising twist at the talent contest was maybe the best part of this movie for me, but wasn't explored further sadly). Very predictable but overall, it was fine.

It's Cute
rdamian196319 May 2020
Yes it's corny --- no the acting isn't great, but its entertaining. The movie is directed towards young kids -- silly fun and family value messages. The movie lacks depth but many kids' movies do. The WWE theme adds to the fun.

More than a wrestling film
archiekershaw5 March 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Like The Big Show Show (also on Netflix) The Main Event sadly just came and went which is a huge shame since the premise is very interesting and intelligent and it's played brilliantly. The story follows a young WWE nut from the states who finds a thought provoking wrestling mask in a strange basement. He begins to wear it and finds it gives him superpowers in the ring but at the Same time he's struggling at home due to his mother leaving the family and his dad is distant due to struggles because of her departure, his grandmother though is always by his side as his companion! Don't go into this expecting a film only for wwe fans because that's not what this is, the main event will please wwe fans due to wrestler cameos, references and the wrestling matches That take place but non wwe fans will also get a kick out of this due to the brilliant story and the incredibly believable cast

A really great film!
delphina-6072019 August 2020
My 6-year old son LOVED this film! As a black boy he really saw himself in this story and it's so rare that black boys are the hero. Seth Carr who plays the lead role is an excellent actor and it was very well cast, with the producers showing real diversity in the cast. It felt very natural and the story was good. OK it's predictable, what do you expect for a U-rated film? But my son followed the plot easily and it was funny, nail-biting etc when it needed to be. I've watched far worse all-white films so people shoudl stop complaining, it's not meant to be 'War and Peace'. The only letdown was the role of the Dad. Allowing the suspension of disbelief that he could be white, the actor was so wooden he could be mistaken for a table leg. That aside, I say 'bravo' to Netflix and please, please, PLEASE can we have more black boys as the hero in films - it's much needed!!!

Rookie Of The Year was to Baseball, Like Mike was to Basketball, and now The Main Event is to Wrestling.
DarkVulcan2917 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The Main Event is a kids film that follows a similar pattern to Rookie Of The Year(1993) and Like Mike(2002). So you pretty much know what to expect when you sit through this. The characters are pretty likable, and never go to far over the top. The Main Event is nothing more than a fantasy for kids who are WWE fans.

Leo is a big WWE fan, one day finds an old wrestling mask, and when Leo puts in on, he discovers it makes him superhuman, but instead of becoming a superhero, Leo decides to become a wrestler, becomes Kid Chaos. And instantly becomes a celebrity. But will it conflict with his school and home life?

A shazam for wrestling but worse
pierreolivier-2128715 April 2020
The idea is not original but could have been funny if at least a little realistic. I mean great, you found a mask that can make you a wrestling start. The fact that the main character is a kid fighting giants is already supernatural. No need to add super jumps, extraordinary strength...etc You could have tuned it down. Worse and worse by the minute

This is so lame and stupid... It is a disgrace and degrading what is WWE

the main event
marmar-6978017 April 2020
The main event was another film that felt under the bus and ended up being run over,it is weird how sometimes we get great wresteling films like fighting with my family but then after we got something like this one, i know that this film is aimed at very young children not older then 10 or 11 but that doesnt mean it could get away with some really bad and corny dialogue, acting that was very awkward and not so good and wresteling moments that are so poorly made and orginazed that it was hard to watch, jokes were also not so funny and they felt forced in a bad way,the main event was a very weak film for me and i dont appiriciete it any way
