- Following the plane crash, the surviving heroes must team up with one another to try to survive the manhunt. Claire is quickly captured by Noah who takes charge of a "kill squad" to find the remaining people with abilities while Nathan deals with the overzealous 'hunter' Emile Danko whom becomes obsessed with tracking down all people with special abilities in his own lethal way. Mohinder and a powerless Hiro must rely on Matt Parkman's spiritual guide to help them. Daphne makes contact with Ando to help her find Matt, unaware of the people now targeting them. In New Jersey, Syler takes refuge in the house of an agent and tortures him to try to get information to what's going on and he forms an unlikely alliance with the agent's son Luke Campbell. Also, Peter teams up with Tracy to look for help, while she begins having second thoughts about running.—matt-282
- "Heroes" - "Chapter Two 'Trust and Blood'"- Feb. 9, 2009
We pick up 43 Hours Later as Nathan is in Building 26 in Manhattan. He calls someone and gives a status report: Claire wreaked havoc on the plane, the pilot managed an emergency landing but the plane broke apart on the ground.
We flash back to the crash site and armed men are chasing Hiro away from the wreckage. He falls into a ditch and Mohinder and Parkman rescue him. Mohinder says they have to keep running. Hiro informs Parkman he still has lost his powers. There are helicopters flying overhead and men shouting. Mohinder wants to go one way and Parkman wanders off. Mohinder grabs him and Parkman turns around flashing the white eyes of The Prophet! They follow him.
Peter and Claire run and are stopped by HRG on a hillside, he holds a gun on them. Claire wonders how he can be a part of this. He says it's more complicated than she knows. Peter wonders if HRG is going to shoot him in front of Claire. HRG puts the gun down. Claire tells Peter to run and he does. Claire says HRG will never get away with this, that people will ask questions. He says she's wrong, and then a bunch of missiles fly overhead and obliterate the remaining wreckage.
Back at the 43 hours from now mark, Nathan, sitting under a group of photos of the captured heroes, is still on the phone saying the crash site was a mess and that Danko was in his face.
We flash back and Nathan is surveying the damage. He's asking Danko why he authorized an air strike. Danko says it's standard protocol and he doesn't need Nathan's permission and once the plane crashed the heroes were redesignated terrorists. Nathan is arguing against the "shoot to kill" approach. Danko says "these people" are dangerous. Nathan counters that they are going into custody and that he and Danko and the government are not assassins. Danko says when you have a rabid dog you don't put it in chains, you put it down. Nathan asks when the rules of engagement changed. Danko says this isn't some tactical exercise and that Nathan's daughter single-handedly created a national security emergency. Nathan says he'll deal with Claire. Danko says "you do that, and I'll do my job" and walks away. Nathan looks over at Claire being held at gunpoint in a chair by HRG.
In the woods Peter runs and is flagged by Tracy. He tries to urge her to run. She says she can't and that her life was just getting back to normal. He points out that if she stays where she is she will get caught. She wants to know why Nathan is doing this to them. Peter doesn't know but he says they have to find a way to stop him and if she stays and gets caught, Nathan wins or she can come with him and fight. They take off.
Hiro, Parkman, and Mohinder spy a trailer area. Hiro thinks the people here can help. Parkman, still sporting the white eyes, approaches the man who lives there, entering the trailer. He gets to the door and it's locked. He busts it open and enters. He comes back out with paper and markers and starts furiously scribbling at a picnic table near by. Usutu sits at the picnic table with him instructing him to focus. Mohinder and Hiro go over to the clothesline to grab some new duds so they can doff their industrial orange jumpsuits. Hiro grabs a shirt that says "Rednecks Make Better Lovers", then tosses it back on the line in disgust.
We fade to a noodle stand where Ando Masahashi - Tokyo, Japan is trying to buy a plane ticket to Russellville, Arkansas. The person on the other end has no clue where Arkansas is, so Ando yells, "Clinton!" before being hung up on. Daphne speeds up and tells Ando that Matt didn't come home last night and didn't call. Ando tells her that Hiro is missing also and explains that their GPS tracker places him in Russellville. Daphne grabs his arm and speeds him off.
Cut back to Matt still scribbling at the table. Hiro tells Mohinder he lost his powers and Ando gained one and Mohinder says that Ando should stay as far away from this place as possible and so should Hiro. He tells Hiro to find a policeman and turn himself in and that if he tells them he's powerless they might let him go. Hiro says he's a warrior and therefore can't give up. Mohinder tells him it's no longer his fight and to save himself while he still can. Parkman's eyes return to normal. Mohinder wonders what the drawings mean. One shows Daphne at the crash site being injured. Another shows Hiro, a young woman in red (Molly?), standing over a third figure in India. Parkman says he doesn't want this skill. Mohinder says it's time to skedaddle. Parkman says if the visions are real then Daphne's in trouble so he runs off to save her. Mohinder say the men will kill him. Parkman says he can't leave her and Hiro hurries after him, as does Mohinder, still carrying the change of clothes for Matt.
In Newark, New Jersey cop cars have rolled up to Gray the taxidermist's house. A woman and her son get out of a car and she sniffs that she never liked that guy anyway. An onscreen title tells us that these two, who are returning from the grocery store are Mary & Luke Campbell. (Shout to 2 Live Crew?) The mom tells the son to take a good look at the police swarm since this is his future if he keeps fighting at school. She hopes his night in juvie taught him something. Apparently, young master Luke was a fan of the cuisine. Mary wants to know why he punched another boy. He won't say. She presses. He says the boy called her a whore. Her anger fades for a brief second to be impressed, but she doesn't quite believe him.
They enter the house and Mary sees a man sitting in her armchair from behind. She whispers, rather loudly, for Luke to call the police. She grabs a poker from the fireplace and is about to whack the guy but as she faces him we see it's Agent Daniel Simmons gagged and bound to the chair by, ew, knives and screwdrivers in his hands. Sylar walks into the room and whips the poker out of Mary's hands, then forces her and Luke into chairs. Sylar says he and Simmons have been waiting for them. Mary wonders who Sylar is and why he's in their living room. He whips off the gag and says Simmons is being difficult and since he has information Sylar needs, Mary and Luke are going to help loosen his tongue. Simmons calls Sylar a sick freak, thinking the villain is going to torture him in front of them. Sylar corrects him, saying he's going to torture Mary and Luke in front of Simmons.
Daphne and Ando speed up to the crash site and notice that "the cheerleader" is captured. Ando is worried about Hiro. Daphne points out that if Ando is supposed to kill Hiro in the future then Hiro can't be dead. (Cheery line of logic). She figures that if Hiro's okay then maybe Parkman is, too, then. Ando says they have to be sneaky then. Daphne says that's why he's staying where he is and speeds off to recon the camp.
Tracy hides behind a tree as one commando approaches to check on another that is down on the ground. She creates a diversion and Peter jumps him from behind and knocks him out. He and Tracy go to grab their weapons as Peter says he's going back to the crash site to see Nathan. She says she saw his lack of control on the plane and he doesn't even know if Nathan's here. Peter admits he can only hold on to one power at a time but he's sure Nathan is here and that he's probably sweating bullets since this whole program was his idea, so his ass is on the line. Tracy says if Peter goes back, Nathan will kill him. He asks if she has a better idea. She says she does. She says she knows Nathan too, and not like a brother, and she knows the way he thinks because she thinks the same way.
HRG marches a hand-cuffed Claire away from the site and she wonders what he's doing here. He says his job. He asks how she was on that plane. She says she was grabbed by his goon squad but she doesn't abandon her friends. He says she has no idea how big the mission is and what will be done to the super-powered once they're on its radar. She says she won't accept protecting her as an excuse for his behavior anymore and that he knows these people- Peter, Matt, Hiro? She can't believe he's treating them like animals. After having walked her into a tent and sat her down he kneels and said he's made arrangements for her immunity but that these abilities have to be controlled. She points out that she has an ability so does that mean she has to be controlled? He says she's missing the point. She says she is one of them and so is he, as she looks over at Nathan. He drops a phone and says she's all set to go back to Costa Verde. She can't believe they think she's just going to skip off to college all hunky-dory.
Claire says so she get a pass but everyone she knows just disappears? "Except for Senator Sky-Boy here, because he's got everything under control." Nathan says he's walking a fine line balancing the security of this country with a-- She cuts him off saying she doesn't even know who he is anymore, and then looks at HRG and says "either one of you." (To be fair to them, did she ever really know them in the first place?) HRG pulls Nathan over and says their arrangement was that he would take orders as long as Nathan protects Claire and to put a leash on Danko. Nathan says not to worry about him, that Danko is useful until he's not. (um, didn't that already happen?)
Daphne speeds in and grabs Claire. Nathan gets mad and tells HRG that he wants her found and that daughter or not, Claire is running out of favors. HRG says that Nathan shouldn't let anything happen to Claire since he wonders what would happen if Danko found out that Nathan was one of his prey.
Flashforward to Nathan's phone conversation as he wearily tells the person on the other end that his mistake was that he expected his people to have acted responsibly and that no one could've expected what happened on that hillside.
We cut back to that hillside and Matt, Mohinder, and Hiro sneaking back to the crash site. Mohinder tries to keep Matt from going closer. Ando peeks out from behind some wreckage and tells them Daphne brought him here. Matt is psyched to hear she was here just as she speeds up with Claire. Daphne and Matt hug. Hiro spies Ando.
Back to the phone call and we hear Nathan say that something brought them (Ando, Matt, Daphne) to the crash site, that they must've had the misguided idea that they could stop this whole thing and as he speaks we see the happy reunions before Daphne gets shot. Nathan says his men overreacted as we see the heroes scatter and Claire get shot blocking Matt and the injured Daphne. Parkman gets inside one of the shooter's heads and makes him turn his gun on his fellow snipers. Nathan says it became a bloodbath when Matt did this. The final commando is shot by Danko as the others scurry away from Daphne's body. Danko grabs a bloodied Claire and cuffs her.
Meanwhile, back in Newark, Sylar taunts Simmons and then turns his finger of evil on Mary shutting her up as she tries to talk. He assesses the family dynamic between her and Luke as dysfunctional- single mom, troubled son, paltry alimony check alerting him to the fact that dad took off some time ago. Luke asks Sylar to stop but Sylar doesn't believe Luke wants him to, that it's a knee-jerk response to his mother in distress. The kid asks Sylar what he knows about him. Sylar says he knows from absentee fathers and shrewish mothers and that Luke would really love to see Mary's blood all over the living room floor. Luke manages to wriggle out from under Sylar's hold and throws out a hand, which throws out a ray of some kind that heats up and busts the coffee cup in Sylar's hand. Sylar smirks. "Small world. We need to talk." Mary looks completely freaked by her son's power.
Danko drags Claire back to the HQ tent and Nathan and HRG, calling all of this bloodshed her fault and knowing that one shot to the back of the head will do her in for good. Nathan and HRG stop him, and HRG takes her away. Nathan and Danko exchange a look.
HRG tells her that Danko will do whatever it takes to bring her down. She wonders what they will do. HRG says nothing, for her to go home and live the normal life she claims she wants. She asks, what about the others? HRG says he'll do what he can. As Nathan watches this, Danko asks how many more casualties Nathan is willing to accept and did he really think the heroes would just surrender? He says he knows that Nathan is the president's golden boy but that if it all goes south, Nathan will have to return to his mama's mansion. Nathan says they're all replaceable, some more than others. Nathan's phone rings. It's Tracy. He holds her off as Danko tells him, and she overhears, that if Nathan's affection continues to get in the way, he won't have any trouble unleashing mayhem.
Tracy asks if this is the kind of killer Nathan is working with now. She tells Nathan all she wants is her life back and she's willing to give up Peter to get it. They agree to meet alone. She hangs up and tells Peter that Nathan fell for the trap.
Luke and Sylar chat in Newark. Luke shows off his power, he can heat things up, sometimes melt them, boil water, like a microwave. He also gets a kick out of what happens to pacemakers. Mary is freaked out. Sylar is impressed. As they chat about Luke's lying ways, Simmons tries to free himself from the knives holding him down. Luke wonders why Sylar cares about him. Sylar says Luke living half a block from his father can't be a coincidence, unless God has improved his sense of humor. Luke says he's wrong, that he has no friends and that his mother hates him. Mary says she doesn't. Sylar says he doesn't need an ability to know that's a lie. Sylar says that his mother can see inside him, see his will, and that's what scares her. She protests that she loves her son and that she just wants him to be happy. Sylar says he's not. Sylar tells Luke that he knows he just wishes he were normal, but that the only reason that kid he fought with is alive is because of his kindness -- which scares him. Simmons breaks free and grabs his gun. Luke pushes Sylar aside and kills Simmons. Mary yells at him to stop. She can't believe Luke killed the guy and asks, "What are you?"
Sylar departs the Campbell house having given them a pass -which he notes is a big deal for him since Luke ruined his only chance at finding his father- but Luke follows, wanting to come with and leave his old life, and mother, behind. Luke says he knows why Sylar is looking for his dad - to discover why he is the way he is- and believes he can help find him. Luke has grabbed the car keys, which Sylar snatches from him. They depart.
Nathan arrives to bargain with Tracy. Peter says to use her powers if she gets in trouble. Not to kill him but to use him as a hostage to leverage with the government and that he's not Peter's brother anymore or her boyfriend. Nathan says his offer of freedom still stands and that he's not the devil she thinks he is. He tries to get inside Tracy's head about Peter and his heroic ways. Peter comes out with his gun and snarls in Nathan's face. As red laser dots appear on their heads, Tracy realizes he lied and brought back up. Peter grabs Nathan and puts a gun to his head and asks how many times they're going to have to do this. As many as it takes, apparently. Danko is yelling at HRG to take the shot on Peter, but HRG says he doesn't have it...though he clearly does. Peter flies away. Men grab Tracy, as she protests to Nathan. HRG goes to Nathan and admits that he had Peter cold, Nathan thanks him for not shooting him.
Back on the phone Nathan is telling his phone-a-friend that they know him and that he didn't want any of this. He says he just wanted containment and protection but now that both sides have tasted blood the next move belongs to the fugitive heroes.
We cut to the fugitive heroes- Peter, Mohinder, Matt, Hiro, and Ando- amassing behind a Baptist church. They look at Parkman's drawing of Hiro with the blond woman in India. He thinks the painting is his destiny and that he must have his sword and that's how he can get his powers back. Mohinder pulls out a painting of himself and Matt getting guns out of a car trunk, saying their destiny must be to seek justice. Matt, distraught over Daphne, says he doesn't want justice, he wants revenge. Mohinder says, "that's not us, that's not you." Peter says their lives as they knew them are over. Ando asks what they do then. Parkman says they bring the fight to their enemies with everything they have. Peter says it won't be easy: they can't trust phones, homes, credit cards, bank accounts, they have to find a way to defend themselves and they leave everything behind. The enemy will come for them and when that day comes they have to be ready.
Sylar and Luke rock down the highway and exchange meaningful looks.
In Costa Verde Mrs. Bennett is glad to have Claire home and even gladder to hear that Claire has decided to forego college for the moment and stay around home and get a part-time job. She kisses Claire and says she really missed her. Claire's phone trills and she sees a text message: "There is hope. You can still fight back. -Rebel." She texts back asking who this is. The reply? "A friend. Who hates them as much as you." She texts "I'm scared." The friend replies: "Me too. Can't give up. Be ready."
Nathan tells his phone-a-friend that Claire is safe and that Peter will undoubtedly come to the friend. He wants to know if they can be counted on to do the right thing. We finally see that he's been talking to Angela who says she can hear in his voice that that's not why he called. She says he suddenly sees how this could end badly and he's looking for reassurance, maybe even absolution. She's not giving it since he pushed her aside and went to the president since he thought his team could handle it. (She's sitting in bed looking over a file with news clippings about Danko and his ties to a coup in Angola.) She suggests he do exactly that, and hangs up the phone.
A man enters the room Nathan is in, informing him, "They're ready for you sir."
Nathan enters an interrogation room holding Tracy. (with Rachel Mills standing guard?) He says it's too late to let her go. She asks why he's doing this. He says the abilities are too dangerous to go unchecked and could lead to chaos. She says that's what he tells himself so he can sleep at night, but that this is really about his ambition and that's all it's ever been about. He tells her to not fight it, it will be easier. Two goons stick a tube up her nose and wrap something around her neck as she screams repeatedly "You're one of us!" to Nathan's retreating form.
