Well made,.....but...
sixxlixxfixx26 February 2008
I really tried, I did.. Great sound editing, acting was good, well shot movie....but repetitious and not in a good way. Made me want to find something interesting in my pocket to stare at. I fully support independent films, And I loved the David Lynch meets Millers Crossing style....but I could not help being bored and annoyed. The 3 other people who saw this with me were not as nice in their critique. One fell asleep. Another became noticeably angry and irritated. The last just kept fidgeting and sighing. Hearing the same lines of dialog 3-4 times just doesn't work in this film. I would see something else by the director though, shows promise.

Non-Linear Movie that tries too hard...
d_woodske26 October 2008
The acting is actually very good. If you watched each scene by itself, you would probably like that individual scene. But in total, this movie falls very flat.

It tries to be something great, but doesn't know where to go with it. You start getting hooked on something then the movie says "that's enough of that, let's move on and try to confuse you." What's worse is the writer/director have no idea how to end it, so that's what they do...they just end it. Worth watching if you are a film student, or want to watch something very different.

I wouldn't recommend it to someone who wants to be entertained though, it does not do that on any level.

Save yourself
samuelitorico28 October 2007
The slow pace and repetition of scenes is obnoxious and just when you start to get sucked in because you think that one unifying element will be revealed to tie the whole movie together, you get squat. The film probably took all of three days to film since most of the work was done in the editing room. You spend most of the film watching the same scenes over and over again with some slight variation in perspective. Barely one and a half hours long, it felt like a 3 hour torture chamber. The acting, dialog and the look of the film were all impressive, the screenplay simply fell short. The film tries really hard to say something in a cryptic, pretentious format, but lacks any actual discernible point. Nobody should see this film.

Thriller! Chiller!
aegriffin1 November 2007
Saw this film at Thriller! Chiller! in Grand Rapids, Michigan and it's fantastic! A true neo-noir masterpiece on par with anything Hollywood could possibly throw at the viewer except that Nobody doesn't treat the audience as stupid and offers us a prime example of digital film-making at it's finest.

The acting, the cinematography, the art direction, the sound design, the story, the kitchen sink, etc., etc., all work so well together that I was totally absorbed from the first frame to the last.

Mr. Linden and his cast/crew did a marvelous job in what I can only simply describe as The Third Man meets Primer without spoiling it for anyone.

Search out this film and decide for yourself.

Good idea, poor execution
IMDBer10057517 October 2009
Warning: Spoilers
As mentioned by other commenters, this movie has a great feel to it. The atmosphere and settings are well done, possibly better than most big-budget films. The acting is exceptional, despite having an unknown cast (unknown to me, anyway).

The plot starts out pretty good, with an opening scene that truly captures the audience's attention. Things get spiced up, initially, when you realize that the movie goes back and forth in chronology; however, as the timeline-skipping continues, it starts to get confusing and annoying. Then, as the movie climaxes, you're left with a "what the hell was the point?" ending.

I think the writers of this movie confused themselves and decided to just end the movie. There was no point and I didn't even see anything about karma in here. It tried to teach a lesson on karma without fully understanding karma itself. It could have been so much better but it failed miserably.

Still, I was entertained throughout this movie, until about the last 25% of the movie. If you have a dollar and some change, pick it up at your local Red Box. I wouldn't purchase this movie, though.

Plot Synopsis
bpeck133 July 2009
Warning: Spoilers
(From the back of the video box.) Who's there? Nobody.

On a cold and endless winter night a ruthless assassin (Mandylor) commits a murder and ignites a sequence of mysterious events that spiral beyond his control.

Narrowly escaping a savage attack by a shadowy assailant who seems to anticipate his every move, time begins to fold in on itself. People he meets don't remember him. Wounds he sustains vanish from his skin. He becomes caught up in an inexplicable loop where events eerily repeat themselves, until an ominous phone call confirms the impossible: his mysterious would-be victim is still alive.

Forced to relive his actions over and over, the circle closes in—ending in a fateful confrontation with…himself.

My opinion--save yourself the time of watching this movie. It is so convoluted that even at the end, you still have no clue about what you just saw. This movie is a down-ward spiral.

Underrated Surrealistic Ne-Noir
walterradunsky12 October 2013
Fortunately, I didn't let the low ratings this film has received dissuade me from seeing it. Borrowing elements from filmmakers such as the Coen brothers, David Lynch, and David Cronenburg, the writer/director of "Nobody" managed to create his own unique and surreal neo-noir movie. The cinematography and production design is visually stunning, and the meticulously crafted script originated the kind of narrative thread that was later used in the more highly praised "Triangle." The story is not a confusing mess that randomly ends without any closure, as some have suggested; rather, it is a narrative in which the resolution (or lack of) is inextricably tied to the beginning (as was the case in the movie "Memento"). As in all noir films, the mystery is unraveled by an eventual understanding of past events; however, circumstances occurring in the story have led to these past events being revisited in an unusual way. It's unfortunate that this narrative has been the object of all its criticisms, as the narrative is precisely what makes this film so interesting and unique.

Half of a very good film.
poeg1116 November 2008
Cast is excellent as is the way it was shot. Very well put together for the first half then it just for lack of a better word loops. There's no progress to make up what should be the second half of the movie and maybe that's its attempt at karmic balance. If anything in the storyline had actually evolved from the earlier repetitions we'd have ourselves a whole movie and a very good one. As it is the enthusiastic beginning just barely escapes being canceled out by the artsy fartsy ending.

This film is worth watching if only because there's a terrific half done film which was better executed than a lot actually possessing an ending. Worth a look if you are a film junkie like myself but dabblers will be holding this one against you so make sure their viewing was voluntary.

Bizarre but brilliant
ashphoenixrising3 July 2011
Let me start off by saying this movie makes absolutely NO sense whatsoever. I did find that annoying like other reviewers and wanted some sort of conclusion. However, the acting done by the entire cast and just for the mere sake of artwork this is a film I will respect and most likely watch over and over again, trying to make sense out of it. The best I can offer is that it is a nightmare - there are so many questions I have about this film that are left unanswered. But just the sheer brilliance of being able to confuse me and intrigue me as a viewer has earned the right to place it in an element of needing to watch it again. The best movies for me are ones that can evoke emotion from me, and while this movie once again made absolutely no sense - I thoroughly enjoyed being led through the bizarre and unreal journey. I loved Costas Mandylor as an actor before this film for his delivery and tough guy attitude that he conveys in most of his films. After seeing it I can also say that I now highly respect him as an actor. I am sure his role in the film was extremely challenging to play and he did it with conviction. This movie doesn't resolve anything and is highly confusing - I wouldn't want to watch it often. Once again however, I respect it for the art that it is and I am sure I will be watching it again. In terms of recommending the movie, I would only recommend it to people that I know would enjoy the kind of mental torture and art aspect of this film. I don't believe this film is for the general public and I would warn anyone before watching this film that they should be prepared to be thoroughly discombobulated.

Loopy, Beautifully Made Neo-Noir that is Incomprehensibly Interesting
LeonLouisRicci5 July 2014
Ultimately Watchable with some Stunning Dark Cinematography, Color, and Expressionistic Elements. The Look of the Thing is the Thing here and if You are Compelled by Non-Linear Story Formats, and Dreamlike Presentations, this Movie is a Must.

But be Advised it is a Dense Screenplay with not a lot that is Easy Going Intellectually. It's Neo-Noir Niche is Derivative of David Lynch and the Coen Brothers. The Acting is Surprisingly Well Done and the Movie is a Fascinating Alternate-Universe with Perplexing Turns and Supernatural Elements.

For a Low-Budget Indie this is an Excellent Effort and the Film is Beautifully Framed with some Interesting Camera Angles and the Dialog is Spiffy, Although Most of the Movie is Mentally Challenging in a Good-Bad Way. But it is Interesting All the Way.

Noir-body Understands....
andytellef2 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
First and foremost, I am no film critic. I'm just a guy that enjoys watching movies and dicussing them. This is merely my opinion, take or leave it.

Ok... Let's state this plainly. There are many, many people that work very hard to create, edit and etc... for films, and I (and hopefully others) personally appreciate the effort you and your brethren take in providing us with entertainment. Thank you!

That said.... you have got to get the writers to step up and complete their thoughts!?!

The finished product presented her feels anything BUT that... finished!

PROS: Gritty looking cinematography, well shot, intense actor portrayals.... everything the film presents should be applauded as positive (especially as an obvious indie film), fantastic concepts and thoughts of characters and settings

CONS: seeming lack of direction (writing-wise, conceptually, overall story) there was no resolution, but the film didn't present enough conceptual substance or growth of charactets or story to "end" the way it did.

SPOILERS:

So, if you manage to stay intrigued throughout the intro and they somehow decide to continue forward into meat of the film, it is as explained above... an indie film that intrigues, but falls short of completion of a story but instead ends open ended alluding to a never-ending cycle attributed to Karma, but fails to seem compelling and feels more like "well we don't really have idea for resolution, let's just leave it open ended, to seem 'introspective'..."

In complete honesty, reading through the other reviews while "watching" the film were my motivation to watch and complete the movie. So I could feel justified to be able to confirm the overall sentiment.

"Supportive of the 'art' created.... but need some more substance to leave your audience in contemplative, existential consideration."

Where is the "Assassin's Commentary"?
ashley_dark_girl9923 July 2009
I was listing to the first commentary of the DVD. I believe the producer said something about an "Assassin's Commentary" where it would focus on what was going on in "Noe's" head. So I listened to the second commentary but it didn't sound anything like what the producer described! ...Help please? I must say the movie is rather confusing, but for me it was very interesting. I'm a huge fan of Costas Mandylor and I thought his acting and narration was awesome, and I did enjoy watching it. But once again, it could be very confusing the first time you watch it. It was a unique movie in my opinion. (And its really hard for me to write ten lines...)

Great Indy Film
LurkerFilms9 October 2007
We recently screened it at the H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival in Portland Oregon and I must say that I loved this film.

This is a thinking man's movie done in period with an excellent cast. I can't really go into depth about the film with out revealing the cause and effect mechanism. It reminds me a little of Memento since it is non-linear and does not have traditional time line. If you love weird tales, film noir, and time paradoxes, then run don't walk to your nearest film festival.

I am not sure were the market is for this one but I hope it fines a home. It is what Indy films are all about.

Meticulously composed, surreal , excellent film
NateWatchesCoolMovies18 November 2011
Every so often there is an indie film that is not only far better than most of what Hollywood makes, but surpasses everything in Hollywood a hundred-fold. Nobody is a dark, foreboding psychological shocker with gorgeous, haunting cinematography, and explosive performances from its leads, Costas Mandylor and Ed O' Ross.

The story takes place in a nameless, virtually empty urban hell hole of a city, where it seems to be perpetually nighttime. (kind of like the city in The Crow, but almost deserted. The hit-man Mortemain (Mandylor) navigates the cluttered alleyways and dank, dimly lit streets looking for his target, contracted out to him by the ruthless crime figure Rolo Towles (O' Ross). Things get murky and surreal when time seems to elipse upon itself like a snake eating its own tale, and Mortemain seems to be stuck in a hellish twilight zone crossed with a rabbit hole in the fabric existence. Events repeat themselves, a mysterious doppleganger of Mortemain appears, time doubles back on itself, and mysterious phenomena plagues the characters, leaving us challenged, freaked out and giddily entertained (well, me anyway).

The films composition is strikingly beautiful for a low budget indie, from the blood red sky along a lonely country road to desolate, snowy streets.

This film is like a mashup of Sin City, Memento, and The Twilight Zone, with its own special and unique flavor. Highly recommended.

exceptional suspense thriller
osbornpaula10 October 2007
I was first struck by the artistry of "NOBODY", at the Action on Film Festival in Long Beach, CA, earlier this year. I attended this festival because I am a student of the martial arts, and because another friend/filmmaker was screening at the same festival.

I was absolutely blown out and held intrigued, till the end, by this film!! I rarely am captivated like this, and invite you fans of the thriller genre to check out this work of art. kudos to the cast for your work as Borg :) I can't say enough about how much this film impressed me.

Psychology of the Existence of the Irrealistic World
ray-795-94226819 July 2010
Warning: Spoilers
There might be quite some people on this planet, who would say, the film doesn't make sense, there is no sense in it, or the story is not good or doesn't make any sense.

But this is just quite the kind of art which the movie uses, to make your active conscious brain loose it's sense, it's power, it's need to understand things. The movie takes you on a journey from the rational to the irrational and to the point where you understand even the irreal, which in my opinion is the whole goal of the film.

Explanation of the movie (spoiler, read it when you have seen it, or before to understand the movie): The movie shows you a story of a man who killed someone.

The story takes twists, shows you different perspectives of the plot, and at a point fixes loose ends not by telling you a rational story, but by showing you, that the man who is told to kill, is in the end on an irreal journey to kill himself, when you realize this, that is the point where loose ends meet and you see a circle in the idea of meaning, that doesn't make sense in a rational way, but in an irreal way it totally makes sense (for your other brain hemisphere, that is there for feelings, dreams, irrational and irreal things, that just can't work, but in dreams very often things are not possible and just DO work and make sense in an irrational way).

the movie is pure art. with a story, that elevates into endlessness, because the man stands for the rational thinking that wants to understand the irrational side, what is not possible. so he keeps to kill himself in his own story and thoughts over and over and doesn't find the exit, because the exit can't be found in a rational way.

the gatekeeper is a woman who sits at the exit and represents a part in our brain/world (philosophically). she makes a fortune and gets a gold coin every time the rational thinker get hysteric over wanting to understand irrational things in a rational way.

in my opinion she represents the "knowledge" of his own brain over what is happening. you can only find the exit through instinct, and understanding of your feelings, and only the first time you experience and live situations.

every time he thinks again about a situation, anything gets more blurry until he finds himself in a circle of actions he can't undo, he is the active part (the killer) (who takes actions) and the passive part (the one who get's killed) (who experiences the effects of other people's thinking (even his own)).

other people i watched the movie with, didn't understand the movie and just thought they didn't understand the story and it was a bad movie.

but the story is there to make no sense, to lift your rational thinking and start understanding things on a more irrational and irreal basis that make sense nonetheless in it's own form of existence.

Creepy film noir
graymatterblues18 January 2008
I first saw this at Portland's 2007 HPL Film Festival. I say first because I will see this movie at every available opportunity. I can't wait for this to hit DVD.

This has a lot of elements to it that I would like individually in a film. Good acting, mobsters, mood, mobsters, non-linear plots, mobsters, film noir action, mobsters. Ah you get the point.

Shawn Linden does a beautiful job setting the film's table with just the right amount of mood. His choice of shots makes this film. The acting is better than the films budget would normally allow and Shawn does a great job pulling it all together. When you watch this you will be amazed.

He has some serious talent and if he can get bigger budgets then I would not be surprised to see Mr. Linden a household name within a few years. My only complaint is that Shawn should make mythos films!!!!

A mind-f**king film Noir.
federico-anastasi31 January 2015
If you like mind-f**king movies you'll like this one. A film Noir with a philosophical and existential taste. What if we all are finally "nobody"? What is freedom, crime, and the difference between good and evil if we are here to repeat forever our looping path?

Certainly the fact that it's a very independent movie affects the way it looks and sounds, but sometimes the poorer is the reacher: the script is strong, the framing clever, the image polished. It's like if Orson Welles got a digital camera and mixed Kafka and The Third Man with Nietzsche and some psychoactive drugs.

It's a very little and rare movie, original, full of symbols and archetypes: it could easily start a real cult if more people had access to it. Watch it open minded and enjoy it.

NOBODY - UNDERSTATED GENIUS
johnkean-078559 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I was thinking 1 hour in if you have a mediocre movie, tell the story in reverse, add a sprinkling of groundhog and you'll make it rather more interesting.

BUT, this movie is actually much deeper and far more cerebral than we, at first, suspect.

It is really a _Dantë_ tale of the perpetual torture of the soul of an assassin who, when he finally discovers the way to break the cycle and eventual release from his eternal hell, is by killing himself until he finally awakens to the realisation that there is NO escape and further, indeed, has to atone for committing his own suicide.

You have to think though, is the Devil, here played by ye olde witche , collected enough karmic souls from him? In other words, was that money chest full OR NOT? YOU DECIDE!

"The World I'm Walking Through Is Irrational And Absurd!"...
azathothpwiggins13 September 2021
In NOBODY, we follow Mortemain (Costas Mandylor) as he traverses a dark and sinister netherworld. All we know about him is that he's a hitman, he's carrying a package, and he's been shot.

There's an old blind woman with a riddle to solve.

Bits and pieces of information start to add up along the way, as the story slowly reveals its secrets.

This has rightfully been called a "neo-noir" film. It's setting is shadowy and bleak, and it's got the mysterious antihero-type man up against the clock. There's also a definite "Macguffin" - What the hell is in the package?

Some have compared it to works from Cronenberg or Lynch. Yes, movies like SPIDER or LOST HIGHWAY do come to mind. While this film doesn't reach those heights, it is good.

NOBODY is a tale of murder, retribution, karma, and absolution. In the end, it makes its own strange sort of sense...
