Cheesy schmaltz of the worst kind

"Das Wunder der Liebe" is a German television movie from 2007, so this one is getting closer to its 15th anniversary. It runs for 1.5 hours, slightly under and even if you will not find the names Pilcher or Lindström attached to this project, the outcome is just as bad (if not worse) than most of these two writer's adaptations. The central character in here ois played by Ruth Maria Kubitschek and I must say I was genuinely shocked by how bad she was. I mean she is almost 90 now and when this film was made over a decade ago, she had already been part of the film industry for over half a century and yet she fails completely with literally every aspect of her performance here. I mean obviously the script was not doing her any favors, but still. It takes a special lack of talent to make ecen the most simple lines feel fake and/or wooden. There are many many examples. Just one when her character freshly arrived at Greece and she is walking the streets with a new friend and they are taking a look at the show window of a jewellery store and she explains why the order of the exhibits is nothing that exudes distinguishment. I mean okay that as already a pretty pathetic way to show us she knows about these things from her own career, but what Kubitschek made of these lines in particular was simply horrible. It goes on like this and as she is in the vast majority of scenes from this film, it is really tough to stomach at times. Now back to the basics quickly again: The director is Thomas Jacob and the writer is Marlies Ewald. Looking at the bodies of work from this duo, it is easy to understand that this film here has literally zero chance to become a quality watch. They have worked on so many crappy projects. And just take the title here: "The Miracle of Love". Utter cringe there. This film takes itself so seriously as well, but has zero right to given the utter lack of creativity from beginning to end. Besides, what is up with the spelling of the writer's first name. Did they not even get this correct? Unreal. Only amateurs at work here.

Okay, now as for the film. It already starts in the worst unrealistic manner possible as we see the main character (despite her age) still getting married again and her groom-to-be is not only late (for pseudo dramatic purposes), but collapses right after he arrives for his marriage and we find out immediately afterwards that he died. So for the sake of it. Also this film ants us to feel sorry for Kubitschek's character as quickly as possible, so we see her as likable despite the complete absence of talent when it comes to the actress' performance. The fact that she is not allowed to stand at the man's grave or how we find out about the problems we had with the man's son and later on with her new man's daughter is just fake of the worst kind. Zero substance. So we see her suffer and mourn and talk about how she will never find somebody else because the deceased was the great love of her life, but don't worry. The film does not care a lot about that anymore pretty quickly when she runs into Rauch's character. Well, I could say a lot of negative about Siegfried Rauch, but as he is longer with us, I shall go easy on him. Traumschiff is garbage, there is no denying. Still, next to Kubitschek he feels like Al Pacino honestly acting-wise. He is not too bad. Still not good, but better than most of the others. He also has many bad lines in here. One example only: when he talks about how young she looks when she laughs or smiles. Utter cringe there as well, but it was 100% the script and not the actor. Besides, probably not even Daniel Day-Lewis could have made some of these lines work. Yes it is that bad. Another thing: Given the fact that almost the entire film is set in Greece, I must say I was genuinely surprised how unappealing it was from the visual perspective. At least there they could have delivered, but I guess the crew from this one just lacks talent like everybody else. One person who definitely does lack talent completely is Arnold Fritzsch. And he deserves to have his name included here because I have rarely seen a soundtrack/score that pompous like this one here and yet so empty at the same time trying so hard to emphasize the more dramatic moments by really going fully over the top with the music. The Kubitschek of composers you can say for sure. Maybe he was even worse in his area of production. Or I can say "is", even if he has not been working since 2014 according to imdb which is definitely a good thing. Still really shocking to see him, as well as the writer and director here who may not have been for as long in the industry as Kubitschek, but still several decades and yet they seem to have not the slightest bit of talent.

Okay, a few more words on this project here. I mean the cringe is there all the time. Be it the main antagonist played by Katja Woywood, who has been in many of these horrible movies back then. And when she wasn't, she was in "Alarm für Cobra 11 - Die Autobahnpolizei". Enough said. It's not just her though. It's basically everybody. Daniela Ziegler is just another example playing the new Greek friend. I don't know if she is related to Regina Ziegler, but actually this one here is another wwork by Regina Ziegler Filmproduktion. German film buffs knnow what that means. This production company has made hundreds of films over the years and you will most likely not find a single one that is of good quality in there. This one here is really symbolic for everything else. There are so many other ridiculously bad moments and scenes in here that it is impossible to mention them all. Just take the marriage proposal at the end, the scenes at the christening, the pseudo drama that they are about to break up because the daughter wants them to etc. The latter was in fact the "big conflict" towards the end that could result in the entire thing falling apart (for the characters) and such a development is in many of these German television films, so that we could think there will be no happy ending. But of course, with this kind of movies there always is and it never feels realistic. Like how did they deal with the daughter's disapproval? Two or three sentences were enough. Rauch's character just gave her a new work when she returns. Oh okay. Nice. One part of this movie I have not mentioned yet is the story about the protagonist's daughter and her husband and of course her pregnancy. Yeah, let's get it all in while we're at it. The daughter is played by Tina Ruland by the way and she is still as untalented as she was during her "Manta Manta" and "Harte Jungs" days. At least, this way it makes sense she is as untalented as her movie mother. Anyway, this sub-plot is just another part oof the film in which they only had one purpose: Misandry. Be it the cheating husband who wants his wife to have an abortion before crawling back to her and begging for forgiveness, be it the male protagonist's son who was sloppy at works and suspects Kubitschek's character of being a jewellery thief, be it the deceased husband who cheated on his previous wife with Kubitschek's character, be it Kubitschek's character's first husband who she did not love and who was clearly not good to her or be it Kubitschek's character occasional statements about men - no matter which perspective you take in here: This film is 100% anti-male. And it is disgusting. Women's rights groups would be up in arms if it wwas the other way around. And, well, if anybody had actually seen this movie. It really went under the radar and that is an amazing thing. It is so messed up. Just take the mother's comments when she is talking about her daughter about the most beautiful moment in her life. I really wanted to throw up. Or take basically all the moments when Kubitschek's character is talking about Greek mythology, about jewellery, about love or about life in general. It does not even have to be specific. The complete absence of talent from the writer and range from the actress turn it into the worst outcome possibly. This movie is a definite contender for worst film of 2007 and with that i do not only mean Germany, but worldwide. It should never be shown again. Highly not recommended and if I gave less than two stars, then here I definitely would. This film is so bad that even calling it "only" a weak film would be the exaggeration of the century.
