Tommy Cooper's Christmas
Prismark1014 April 2023
Tommy Cooper got his hour long Christmas special. It is scripted by Johnnie Mortimer and Brian Cooke who better known for writing sitcoms.

As was the case for such festive comedy specials. There would be guest singers, in this case Clodagh Rodgers and Sacha Distel. The latter was always popular in the UK.

There were also sketches. It is now unusual to see anyone other than Bernie Clifton in the Ostrich puppet costume. Here Tommy appears with the Ostrich several times. Bernie was funnier with it.

It kicks off with Tommy Cooper's inept magic tricks. A few of them do go right just to subvert audience expectations.

The best joke was: My wife's just had a facelift. But it's not high enough, I can still see her.

The sketches did not really seem to be Tommy's strongest suit. I thought the snooker sketch was weak with Tommy appearing as a golfer.

The cooking sketch with a puppet duck refusing to be in for the chop was better. The high heat and low heat was a good sight gag.

Overall I can see why the BBC Christmas specials for its stars were just a bit better.
