The term "serial killer" was first used in 1930 by Berlin investigator Ernst Gennat. However, it was not used by law enforcement much until the 1970's when coined by FBI Agent Robert Ressler.
When Byrnes visits Lucius in the lab, he boasts that he is well read, mentioning the Greeks and Latins, whose translations were then part of a good high school education. He then boasts about having read the Chinese, including Sun Tzu. However, the Art of War was not translated into English until the 20th century. It's a stretch to imagine that Byrnes read the French translation.
