The New Zealand Haast Eagle is live-acted with a South American Harpy Eagle.
Ancient legend claims that the "Hokioi" was a descendant of the star who was a rival to "The Hawk" (Perhaps the Haast Eagle), and hearing the sound of "Hokioi" was thought to be an evil omen.
The "Pouakai" (or Poukai) was the name given to a bird of legend who grappled and carried humans and took them to the mountains to feed on them. This seems to coincide with belief that they made their nests there. The legend concludes with the hero leaving himself as bait to lure the bird into a hole where the rest of the hunters would be able to kill the eagle.
The "hokioi-hokioi-hu" is the Maori name for the sounds thought to be Haast's Eagle cries before descent toward its prey. Another name for the bird the Maori people coined was Poukai (also spelled Pouakai), and "Hakawai".
