I appreciate its originality
joekenny-4102823 June 2023
The Dark Pictures' follow up to Man of Medan comes Little Hope. An original horror that grabs your attention from start to finish. And with a talented cast, like Will Poulter. Now known for Guardians of the Galaxy 3. This is a good video game sequel. It's bold, daring and fearless that they've decided to make this convincing as a serious horror, with a good soundtrack, good 60fps recently, and the story is a never been told before experience. Gameplay is still stiff when it comes to movement with the characters. Needs to be more flexible. Ending was a tiny anti-climatic if I'm being honest, nonetheless it's a good game in general. Not one to miss.

Good story....but was kinda easy 😳
newenaneha2 November 2020
I was surprised to see the HUGE improvement after the glitchy Man of Medan! Still isn't as good as Until Dawn (at least in my opinion) but it felt closer to it than Man of Medan did. Wish the button prompts were a little more harsh though. I never missed one besides 1 at the end where I couldn't aim my gun in time. OVERALL, would definitely recommend! Had no idea where the game was taking me and made me second guess my choices! Can't wait to explore the other paths!

Great Game

Better than Until Dawn imo. The story is fantastic and the ending made me think. This game is tense and mysterious and intriguing. Gameplay, Until Dawn excels, but story wise this one takes the medal.

Good premise and all but...
kailaskishore-0473611 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
There's no denying this- I had a fun time with this game. But seriously, it's not that great. I'm gonna get to that part after praising it for what it is. It's much better than Man of Medan, the previous Dark Pictures game. The premise is spooky. The game's got atmosphere. Gotta give it that. There's this fog which redirects you back (no way out basically), there's a missing bus driver, all this stuff from the past about witchcraft and just an overall sense of dread. As far as the scares go, a few of them did get me. There are tons of jumpscares in here. But they get very watered down and predictable after a point. I even liked these characters. I really did. But then, the ending sorta ruined a huge part of the game for me.

*******SPOILERS AHEAD*********** Now, when we get the big realization at the very end that we were playing as the bus driver all along and that Vince was the guy at the funeral at the beginning and that nobody really existed , that really works at the moment. A temporary sense of shock to be precise. A large part of the story gets all clear. But then, a huge chunk doesn't make sense. That demonic figure at the very beginning, the witchcraft part which eventually leads to the creatures. Nothing makes sense.

And then, it feels very pointless. If all these characters were destined to be non existent, what was the point of all we had to endure? All those jumpscares, fending against the creatures, the flashbacks.

But apart from the flaws it has regarding the way the storyline turns out, I think it's still a good game. The sound design is great. This game is visually good. Gameplay is decent. There is fun to be had here. It's creepy. If interactive games are your kinda thing, you might just like it. This game does give you a slightly cinematic experience.

Great game, the ending has more meaning than you think!
Elizadoom9 November 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I'm going to add a comment from someone on YouTube about this game that explains the whole thing a lot more clearly for those that are confused regarding the ending. Obvious spoilers alert!

The events of the game are one big delusion created by Anthony so he can feel like he saved his family and therefore forgive himself for failing them in the past. The central theme of LH is forgiveness, and the only way to 'win' the game is if everyone can find forgiveness. Vince must forgive Anthony. Anthony must forgive Megan for burning down the house, just as he must forgive himself for failing to save everyone.

The Witch Trials are essentially a metaphor for his trauma. He was raised in Little Hope, which is practically built upon its history with the witch trials. From its historical reenactment society, to its witchcraft museum - even the name of the rundown bar is a reference to witchcraft - so it makes sense that he would use that as a parallel for the things that happened to him/his family. Anthony was also directly blamed for the blaze that killed everyone, so he can relate to the feeling of being falsely accused/ blamed for something. This is also why all the 1700s dopplegangers are killed in a similar way to the family in the 70s. The mum suffocates, the dad is crushed, the brother falls and is impaled and the sister burns alive.

Ultimately the point of this sub-plot is so you can forgive Megan. The other characters are psychological projections of Anthony, and the fact that they're all quick to blame 'Mary for the witch trails in the past, represents how Anthony subconsciously blames Megan for the deaths of his family. The only way to achieve the best ending is for him to realise that Mary/Megan had her own demon in the form of the Reverend (the game's opening mentions that the Reverend is spending more time with Megan, which suggests some abuse occuring).

The point of the demons in the modern day, is so that Anthony could forgive himself for not saving everyone in the house fire. As Anthony/Andrew, you cannot defeat the demons. It's up to the other characters to save themselves and make them disappear. In fact, if you try to save them, it more than often leads to their deaths. In the same way, you come to realise that you cannot hold yourself responsible for the deaths of your family, because you were utterly powerless to help.

To a lesser extent, I think the demons are also a tool for Anthony to forgive the flaws of his family. In the opening its clearly shown that they're dysfunctional as a family unit. In the modern day, they can only save themselves once they change the content of their character and undo their crippling flaws. The dad/professor for example, who was previously detached from raising the kids and resented them, eventually had to step up and become a leader and a protector to them. In the end, its a story about trauma, guilt and self-forgiveness. Its a psychological horror masquerading as a supernatural one.

Better than Mess of Medan
takato05248 November 2020
While not as good as Until Dawn or even Heavy Rain, this was a huge improvement over Medan. I wanted so hard to like that game because I love the Ashmores, but it was terrible. I didn't know a single actor in this game, but I was able to really dive into their characters. The story telling is 10x better than MoM, and the qte's have been improved.

I will agree with others and say that the jump scares are pretty much nonexistent. In UD, if you had a camera, it would turn on right before a scare, and while for some that cheapened the moment, for me that made me even more tense. I didn't jump once in this game, and I played with all lights off, surround sound, the works.

But overall it is a decent game. The ending surprised me and I actually liked where they went with it. You could probably wait tho until the price drops.

EXCEPTIONAL STORYTELLING!
clickerddoyle8 November 2020
In my honest opinion, Little Hope is better than Man of Medan and until dawn. There is so much depth to this story, and the pacing is brilliant in making sure you are constantly empathising with the confusion and fear the characters feel. The range of setting, and history and ACCENT ACCURACY!! (Brilliant Yorkshire accents) I very seldom feel so invested in every timeline of a story that jumps back and forth. This game will leave you constantly trying to figure it out, so you're right where the game wants you. The witch trials storyline is both unnerving and opinion dividing as you truly feel left to your own devices, and totally in control of the outcome.

Worth the time and money, there's a very powerful ending, giving space to much conversation and debate afterwards.

Original & intriguing - characters lacked depth.
SamJamie28 February 2021
The Dark Pictures Anthology: Little Hope, also known simply as Little Hope, is an interactive drama survival horror video game developed by Supermassive Games and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment.

Little Hope has an engaging cast including Will Poulter (Midsommar, Maze Runner) but characters lack much depth or interesting backstories. Although it does have an intriguing mystery at its core - leading to a twisty, somewhat frustrating ending. As the story unfolds there are a few chilling and gripping moments creating interesting conflict between characters but it takes too much time getting to the action. Overall, the game is interesting but lacking in too many areas to warrant a better rating.

Exceeded all expectations

Warning: Spoilers
I pre-ordered this game over a year ago and I have to say it was definitely worth the wait! A lot of people don't like the twist at the end, it's another mind game like Man of Medan, but I really liked it. If you're not a fan of the end, play it a second time and you'll see how there are clues smattered throughout the game that really show Anthony's grief over his family's death and his survivors guilt. The end leaves you wondering... those who survived the night alongside Anthony... does this represent how he forgave himself over their death, or do they still haunt him? And the whole bit with the past? He knows the history of the town and he tries to change the past by using this as a coping mechanism... but you can't change the past.

Honestly, it's brilliant. Play it again if you must. But the writing is astounding.

Great game. Spoilers

Warning: Spoilers
I loced the game. Thought the story was well written and enjoyrd the ending; howeeeeeeverrrr, i hate the pace our characters walk. If they are going to walk that slow make it more edgy and terrifying. I was not scared because i knew nothing would get me. Another point someone else brought up, no matter what choice you choose no matter what path you take its all rendered meaningless by the ending and thats sort of frustrating. All in all play through once is great ill need to give it time before i play again to see if there are more endings.

Played twice, brilliant each time!
kennethveiby3 November 2020
Man of medan and Untill dawn were great games, but this one hit home. It seems like the developers took what experience they had from the two former games and made the best of it. Excellent and clever writing, especially with two players experiencing the game from 2 different perspectives. Second playthrough was just as interesting as the first, with very different outcomes and relationships between the characters. I quite liked the mystery revolving the past and the present, and the game never got boring. It was scary enough, a 6/10 on the Heebie Jeebies - scale, but it is the story and atmosphere that carries the game. It's rare, but i the ending was both interesting and dissapointing at the same time. Although I encountered a few minor bugs , the game played like a breeze.

Loved it

Bland mess
Nob0dy5 November 2020
Warning: Spoilers
As the title says this game is a bland mess.

Until dawn became such a hit because it had cheesy over the top slasher movie characters, with typically dramatic, but believable interactions, it mixed real world scares of serial killers with supernatural horror and was a fun game start to finish.

This is short, it is at most 4 hours long

It is not scary, the monsters are creepy, credit where its due, but the only scares in the game come from cheap jump scares from crows, ghosts screeching as they lunge at the character from the dark, deer running through unlit woods. There are very very few moments where there is actual danger or even a sense of actual danger and for a horror game having a sense of danger and a tense atmosphere is an important thing, yet it is almost entirely neglected here

The choices do not matter, the ending of the game is the same trope they used in man of medan and is the laziest writing trick in the book, not only is it so bad it renders every choice you made throughout the game 100% meaningless but it also removes any and all motivation to even consider replaying it because by then you will already know that none of that stuff is happening, its all completely insignificant. The characters you control are nothing more than creations imagined by a sole character, there is no reason at all to empathize with them or to care what happens to them, so where is the reason for replaying it even supposed to come from?

Continuing to talk about the ending, it is such an unbelievable cheat that supermassive have relied on twice now, its is a cheat because any single person on this planet capable of writing could write a story if they were allowed to throw in abnormal things and then allowed to use an "ending" that absolves them from having to explain any of it, or to wrap up the characters story-lines, or to be consistent with the overarching story or to put any creativity at all into the mysticism and supernatural entities in the creation.

One last note on the poor excuses for endings we do get, they are not dependent on actions or "choices" they are dependent on words. Did you have one of the characters ask for help when they were in a life or death struggle? well if you did as far as the writing in this game is concerned that makes you a bad person, it means that you made poor choices and the character you made ask for help will "die" in the ending over something so arbitrary. Taking a gun or knife? doesnt matter, but having a character ask for aid as they are fighting off seemingly real demons? that makes that character flawed and deserving of death, its nonsensical, its lazy, its unfulfilling and by every conceivable measure the ending is a complete disgrace.

It isnt just the ending though, the writing is terrible, period. If any of you have played until dawn remember how those interactions went? they were over the top in the same sense 80's horror movies were, but the interactions between people flowed seamlessly, in little hope over 90% of the dialogue does not even come close to resembling how humans interact, it is choppy and they cut each other off and it is an immersion breaking disjointed mess, unfortunately

Do you want to find out the mystery behind the demons? there is no mystery they simply arent real.

Are you curious to see why the past selves from the witch trials are the most present threat in the game? you cant, there is no explanation because none of it is real

Are you curious to find out if mary is as evil as she seems or if it is all the clearly evil priest pulling all the strings? there is no explanation because neither of them are real.

Do you want to find out how and why their past selves and present selves collide in a a supposed life or death situation? there is no explanation, it just happens in someones head Would you like some backstory on the characters to be able to empathize and invest yourself in them to be better immersed in the game? There are no backstories because the versions of the characters we see do not exist Do you want to be able to replay the game again and see what different choices yield? you technically can, but since you know the character are just fictional creations of the damaged mind of another fictional character you know there is no danger, no mystery, nothing supernatural, there are no stakes whatsoever.

Do you want some closure on the satanic cult leading mayor of little hope that indirectly lead to everything we see in the game? there is no closure, there is no explanation, we are given slivers of information in a few notes and thats your lot.

Sorry to bang on so much about the ending, but it is without a shadow of a doubt the worst part of this game, with a better ending the game would still not have been amazing but with a real story and real supernatural/horror elements it would be a solid 6-7/10 experience( sorry for how ugly the formatting of this is, it was submitted as bullet points to outline the shortcomings in the writing but when i submit it clumps it all together as one paragraph

Too long, didnt read A game sold on the premise of being a choice based horror game has very little in the way of horror and an ending so lazy it renders every single choice you can possibly make in the game utterly moot. Until dawn came out in 2015, and somehow for this successor supermassive have removed every positive thing that made until dawn a success and replaced them with tropes, cliches and rushed out games for quick money grabs.

You may got some enjoyment out of it the first playthrough, but is very short and you will very quickly reach a disappointing "conclusion" that leaves a bitter after taste and subtracts any desire you might of had to replay it, I was very much looking forward to this game, but im afraid I cant in good conscience give it more than a 3/10

Lost in a ghost town
kluseba3 January 2021
The Dark Pictures Anthology: Little Hope is the second entry in the interactive survival horror game series by British video game developer Supermassive Games. This video game available for Playstation 4, Xbox One and Microsoft Windows was initially supposed to be released earlier this year but it was pushed back just in time for Halloween due to the coronavirus pandemic. If you appreciated the immediate predecessor The Dark Pictures Anthology: Man of Medan as well as Until Dawn, then you should certainly like this video game here as well. It certainly doesn't reinvent the genre but convinces with gripping atmosphere, interesting choices and overlapping story lines.

The game follows four college students and their professor who return from a field trip and need to take a detour via abandoned New England town Little Hope due to an accident on the main highway. Their bus however crashes in the thick fog and their driver mysteriously disappears. The five characters need to stick together in order to survive the night in the sinister town. As they explore a sinister bar, a forgotten cemetery, an old-fashioned factory, a creepy playground and a dusty police station, the five characters realize that something seems to be amiss about that town. They are haunted by mysterious flashbacks and encounters with ghostly creatures. They learn about fateful witch hunt trials that divided the community three and a half centuries ago at the beginning of the town's existence. The five protagonists also learn about a terrible house fire and a shocking factory closure that led to the town being shut down half a century ago. The three time lines slowly start to connect as the protagonists learn the stunning truth behind the mysterious events. The choices they make are not only going to determine their own fates but might even change the fateful events of the past.

This video game convinces on numerous levels. It takes about five and a half hours to play it from start to finish but offers much replay value due to multiple hidden scenes and a multitude of different endings. Little Hope has a creepy atmosphere right from the start that is carried throughout the entire game until a stunning ending that leaves no questions unanswered. The impacts of the different choices that can be made throughout the video game are often less immediately obvious than in the predecessor but might come back haunting the player towards the climatic ending. The three story lines are all very interesting and the way they have been interwoven progressively starts to make sense as the game goes on.

Another positive element is that the controls rely less on quick time events than in the predecessor which improves the overall fluidity. The controls are a little bit easier to handle in this game as well. The graphic and sound effects are very solid even though there could have been some more diversity regarding the overall soundtrack.

The voice actors did an excellent job here as well and increase the immersive atmosphere. Pip Torrens convinces as mysterious curator, Will Poulter does an excellent job breathing life into socially awkward but reasonable student Andrew. Ellen David incarnates mature but impatient student Angela. Caitlyn Sponheimer convinces as rebellious and vibrant student Taylor. Kyle Bailey incarnates more popular and sociable student Daniel who is however often conflicted regarding his opinions and fails to emerge as a positive leader. Alex Ivanovici plays professor John who is very intellectual but also very controlling.

The only negative elements that should be pointed out are that the game isn't particularly innovative and that the story line is somewhat predictable with an ending that I could actually see coming by a mile.

Still, The Dark Pictures Anthology: Little Hope is one of the most atmospheric, dynamic and entertaining video games in recent memory and highly recommended to anyone who likes to explore horror stories with a few twists on a cold autumn or winter day.

Better than Man of Medan but still not very interesting
AvionPrince1618 August 2021
Why i put a very good mark even if the story is pretty classic? Because the twist at the end was risky. They try something with this game that, for me, succeed. The risk that they made want me to put the mark higher. Just for that. Because Man of Medan was clearly awful in each part of the game. And this one tried something. Thats why!

Great Game With *ONE* Big Issue (No Spoilers)
cameronroyhall2 November 2020
Real talk, I loved this game. The performers nailed their work, the story fascinated me, and I enjoyed the QOL changes made to the gameplay. I *did* have some issues with the walking mechanic, where my character would suddenly shift direction without my input, but the struggle was minimal.

The main reason I knocked off a few stars on my rating (8/10) was because of the ending. The twist was well integrated into the plot but I felt like it cheapened the more interesting story beats in a way that immediately left a sour taste in my mouth.

Other than wishing for a more fulfilling ending, and minor mechanical glitches, the game was/is well worth it in my book.

A much better entry than Man of Medan

Warning: Spoilers
I really enjoyed the story through and through. For me personally the ending wasn't exactly clear at first but upon understanding fully it seemed a much better ending that first thought, as far as this kind of plot twist goes it's more acceptable but I feel it could have been executed a lot better. Overall though it was a blast of an experience and I really enjoyed the character development throughout as always.

It's Alright.
Rikki_Rollo1 November 2020
I think Little Hope is okay. The story is really good and better than Man of Medan, but the game has some flaws. I think the story feels a bit slower than Man of Medan, the QTE's are way too easy, easier than Man of Medan and Until Dawn, and it's easier to keep everyone alive towards the end. The ending however was a bit shocking and a little disappointing, and some jumpscares are repetitive and predictable.

Overall, the game looks good and the game does an okay job at jumpscares.

I've played through 8 times.
kderuy-8242229 November 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Alright. So the initial play-through is great. You get a great story and what seems like, a lot of options. I played again, and killed off everyone... which, spoiler, will lead to the good ending, pending on if you get the gun. And that leaves you with 4 different endings.

And that's it. Which is very disappointing. I've played through 8 times. Don't think of saving anyone during the witch trials except the girl. The rest will die and It's just a waste of time and repetitive cutscenes. And if you think it matters if you pick up the doll or do really anything with any evidentiary stuff, it doesn't. None of it matters. Again, it is fantastic for the first couple play-throughs until you realize that no matter what you do, the outcome will most likely be the same as one you've got before. Even with the terrible acting, the different deaths are fun to see, but going through the slog of another game just for those 15 seconds isn't worth it.

Man of Medan is 1000% better. This is ok.

The second game in the dark pictures anthology named little hope is a very creepy game that made me jump out of my chair and had me scared to my heart little hope does a great job building tension and atmosphere the Gameplay has improved over man of medan and the performances have improved massively the characters were likeable and had good chemistry together and the jumpscares were very affecting the curator also improved over the last game he had more to do and I liked him more than i originally did however its ending was disappointing and had me confused over then that little hope was fun and exciting.

Greatest ending!
londonelim24 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
This game doesn't have the best characters in the series with them being pretty plain and bland, but the story and lore is super sweet! I honestly love this game so much, it was great! This is probably the hardest game of the series with it being super hard to keep the characters alive throughout the game because of the certain things you need to do. The monsters of the game are okay but not very unique to me compared to their other games, the ending of this game was amazing with the reveal but also sad at the same time after thinking about it.

I highly recommend this game for those looking for a tough horror game to play!
