An Interesting Mixed Bag
makutatexxidos30 July 2021
Did not expect this to be a musical, however I was pleasantly surprised with the music. The story itself is also very good and offers some thoughtful themes and ideas. It is quite similar to the likes of Adventure Time in a good way. The odd blend of humor and serious atmosphere might not be for everybody, but I massively enjoyed it.

I will admit, the centaur characters were at times a bit ~much~ but Horse is an interesting protagonist and I really liked the greater mystery/theming behind the show.

The animation is very fun and mobile and I like the heavy contrast between the more silly aspects and the serious gritty stuff not only in tone but also music and visuals.

Obviously not for everyone
foreverfalling30 July 2021
This show is very 2012 cartoon network. It pushes the boundaries of goofy/weird but still has incredible heart at the core of the plot. Not everyone's going to enjoy it or "get it", heck I went in expecting the worst from the trailer, but it ABSOLUTELY succeeds what it set out to and those who enjoy this genre will love it.

This premise should not work. But... (UPDATED for S2)
josephmayes3 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
So let me tell you about this show's premise.

A war horse from a war torn world of humans is teleported into a bizarre world of colorful, obnoxious, and varyingly insane centaur-esque creatures that have magical powers (one of which is the ability to create miniature, existentially dreading versions of themselves). That horse named "Horse" begrudgingly joins a herd of centaurs and embarks a journey of self-discovery, memeable faces, body horror, PTSD, depression, and existential dread. And it's also a musical.

This sounds like a desperate and stupid premise that would offer no depth or a specific tone. Something that would be designed specifically for kids and nothing more than a cash grab.

But here's the most insane part: CentaurWorld is not only surprising, but also one of the best shows I've seen this year. The animation is fluid and top notch, and not just in the action scenes, but just consistently excellent with the characters' movements being fluidly expressive and the landscapes they cross are nice and varied.

Speaking of, the characters are fun and bubbly; Horse is a superb, down to earth straight man who slowly warms up to the crazy realm of the Centaurs; the Herd is weird, almost infantile and borderline insane at points. My personal favorite character from the show is Wammawink, who is adorable, motherly, a wonderful foil to Horse, and easily the most layered and tragic character in the Herd.

And what I love most about this show is the willingness to drop the mostly light-hearted tone and delve into deeper and darker themes like identity, existential dread, despair, war, and post traumatic stress. Even the dread and despair bleed into the music numbers.

Lastly, the one thing I dreaded going into this series was the musical numbers. But I gotta say, most of the songs here are actual banger, with a couple having a lot of emotional power. There are a lot of songs in each of the episodes, but they are short and varied enough to not overstay their welcome (even if some of the transitions into the songs feel abrupt and clumsy). While a handful of the songs are reminders that this still directed mostly to kids, the songs here are actually great and meld well with the scenes.

The show isn't without its faults though. Again, some of the song transitions can feel sudden and clumsy; the herd, while can be funny, can get on viewers' nerves. But this show depends heavily on taste, since not everyone will likely enjoy this movie mainly because of the premise, the humor, or the character design.

Beneath the blindingly colorful exterior, CentaurWorld is deceptively brilliant. The animation is stunning, the characters are likable, the show takes the right balance of keeping the journey slow enough to not feel rushed, but fast enough to keep the characters going. If anything, this show reminds me a lot of Arlo the Alligator Boy, a movie I had a lot of expectations with. But where that movie was a clumsy sales pitch for an upcoming series, The situation here is the opposite. I had no expectations with CentaurWorld, but ended up loving this show. This weird, but brilliant show.

So I got a chance to see the show in its entirety and Season 2 continues that's streak, albeit with more shaky execution. The first half is not as good as the latter, with the humor more hit-or-miss (though when the jokes hit, they *really* hit) and the overall soundtrack, still good, but not as memorable and a bit over-reliant on reprises. The season does pick itself up after Episode 3 and the movie-length finale is ingenious and a massive improvement over last season's finale. But even then, the muddy execution of the first half really knocks this season down a peg.

This show is still a 10/10, but if I were to individually graded the seasons, season 1 would be a 9.5 out of 10, and season 2 is a 9 out of 10.

One of the weirdest cartoons I've ever watched (in a good way)
BoxwoodExpress3 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I came into Centaurworld thinking that I wouldn't like it very much, just because I didn't like the centaur designs -- too simplistic. But boy was I wrong.

Centaurworld is like the Cowboy Bebop of western cartoons -- it combines so many genres into one that it becomes its own genre. There's adventure, action, mystery, drama, comedy, and a musical aspect -- every episode has tons of songs.

Not to mention the fierce juxtaposition between the gritty and dramatic nature of Horse's original realm (she's a war horse) and the fluffy cotton candy nature of Centaurworld. This is really meta -- you see, it's a commentary on the battle between comedy cartoons and story-driven cartoons. Centaurworld is both of these things and more.

I found myself not really caring for the centaur characters at first, thinking that they were annoying, but as you spend more time with them, you feel more sympathetic to them -- especially Mamawinks.

Mercury Filmworks always delivers on the animation, and they did a great job with the brown, darkish lighting for Horse and Rider moments vs the pinkish neon color scheme for Centaurworld, and the beautiful animation for both of them. The former is stylized like a graphic novel while the latter is simplistic.

I can't believe I ended up loving it, and you will too if you give it a chance -- unless you don't like musicals.

A colourful world is introduced with singing, dancing and magic! But there is some dark stuff...
kaipotter-5283530 July 2021
This show is a ride. It suddenly goes from the themes of war to your ordinary rainbow coloured cast of characters just singing, dancing with some magic spells here and there. But somehow it just all ties together so well! It's an absolute delight and I hope that Season 2 is even better.

Wacky, Wild, and Beautiful (with powerhouse vocals)
AlphaDovah31 July 2021
It's absurd and silly for much of the show while simultaneously delivering consistent and recurring moments of beautiful raw emotional intensity...from a horse and a llama... This ungulate driven show has absolutely no business possessing the degree of song and vocal quality it has, but it does so unabashedly and to great effect. We never know what to expect, but it's certainly never boring in its zany, charming, and albeit sometimes inappropriate, humor and dialogue. Fun, wacky, emotional and brilliantly musical; I loved everything it (almost literally) threw at me and will eagerly await season 2.

Wonderfully weird!!
dottelotte30 July 2021
This is the most bizarre thing that I have come across in a long time!!! It is technicolour, mind bending burst into song (A LOT) ridiculousness. My 6 year old loves it. It does actually have the fundamental moral 'lessons' woven into it. It won't be everyone's cup of tea but then nothing is. I enjoy the songs, they're very showbiz.

Beautifully animated show with Broadway-caliber tunes and an epic storyline
happystmurphysday31 July 2021
Horse (the aptly named horse) should be named Odysseus due to the fact that this fun and wacky new show is all about her journey to get home to her beloved rider. The characters are often zany, but the themes (inclusion, family, discovery) are weighty and real. It's a bit like Animaniacs (the old version, not the reboot) meets Adventure Time meets Over the Garden Wall meets Stephen Universe. Most members of the cast are Broadway veterans, so when they do sing, it's worth listening to, and I often times find myself wishing the songs were longer. Special shout out to the storyboarding by Sarah Soh!

Excited for more
ironfanwithvan4 August 2021
This show has a lot of energy which can be quite annyoing sometimes but it has a lot of charm and fun. I would like the more seriuse tone from the start would last a bit more but most of the charakters are a lot of fun. Some could have been cut out but overall this is a good show.

Be warned... There's a LOT of singing...
pfne11 August 2021
Everything about this show is very very good.

The animation is fantastic. The voices are great. The singing ranges from good to amazing.

What brings it down slightly is the story being a bit predictable and the over the top zaniness making it sometimes more "WTF?" than lol.

Be warned though. If you don't like cartoons with occasional songs, like MLP etc, this cartoon has tons of songs. Some lyrics are great and it works well, other lyrics are... Well.. serviceable..

yes good
djurrepower14 August 2021
Feels wild and in its element. And its clear that the makers know a lot of animation culture with all the references and sutble hints. But the story felt a bit stale, with only small hint towards the overall history of worldbuilding. Most of the time the episode just focuses on anecdotal world problems, and it loses that feel of an overarching story. But all in all pretty well made show with a great style, but maybe a little lacking in intrique.

6/10: yes ok but.

This is not funny!
irinasundelin5 November 2022
It seems that the so called "humour" of this consist mainly of fart jokes and the characters acting stupid and irrationally. Speaking of the characters, they are annoying, obnoxious and unreleatable. There are also some foul language that isn't suitable for children, and there is much nudity in this. Every minute of watching this seems to make anyone gradually dumber. I wouldn't even let monkies watch this. The plot is inconsistent and frankly bad written. A kindergartener could write better than this. Then the artstyle, it isn't for people with heart conditions, or anyone that doesn't want a heartcondition. The artsyle is extremely ugly, and watching it makes my eyes tear up with irritation.

Your opinion of this show might change if you're patient enough to finish the whole season
pinkez7 September 2021
I was very skeptical of this show because of how over the top and unfocused the humor seemed from the trailer and honestly throughout the series in the general. BUT it was seriously worth the patience to get to the end because it's so clear that this show has a lot more to offer than it lead us to believe and it's made me very excited for a second season. You get glimpses of something dark going on in the background of the show from the beginning, and the payoff is worth it once you reach the end of the season and everything starts to come together. If you like adventure time, Steven universe, legend of Korra, the owl house, midnight gospel and other similar shows, seriously give this a shot, get to the end and see how you feel because it exceeded my expectations.

Definitely a goodie bag
dootdootnash3 August 2021
It's got a little bit of everything. It's got humor for adults and kids (especially us adults who like really low brow humor), lots of beautiful songs, goofy nonsense, dark under bellies, scary relatable themes, and lots of heart. It's major Steven Universe + Adventure Time vibes but is also its own thing. Can't wait for season 2!

Only watched episode 1
jeroen472 October 2022
The characters didn't seem to act intelligently or realistically in the first episode. For example, the protagonist kept trying to escape a magic barrier, but all the attempts were focused on one place in the barrier. Why would she not try to break the barrier in other spots? I don't think focusing exclusively on one area was part of a joke.

The first episode had a lot of wasting time. It was obvious many times that a joke was being made. But I found none of the jokes funny, and usually they didn't contribute to the story. Some songs also didn't seem to give (much) new information, and I didn't enjoy the singing enough to want songs for the sake of having songs.

I've read through most of the other reviews, and no one has convinced me that this series gets better after episode 1, nor have I read a good explanation why this series is good in general (apart from praising the songs).

To give you an impression of my taste, these are some series I have rated highly in the past: 'Cyberpunk: Edgerunners', 'The Sandman', 'Violet Evergarden', 'Vivy: Fluorite Eye's Song ', 'Great Pretender', 'Messiah', 'The OA', 'Sense8', 'Beastars', 'Dark', and the movies 'Interstellar' and 'Arrival'.

Made an account just for this review!
kayjaywolf7 September 2021
My girlfriend and I have always been a fan of watching children's TV shows since our teenage years because we loved to view the plots as adults. We enjoy catching the hidden (most times rather blatant) adult content that would be overlooked by adolescents and young kids. We were NOT at all disappointed by this show!

It has an Adventure Time feeling to it - random events with zany animation, ridiculous dialogue, yet a serious undertone that looms in the distance. I also compare a bit of it to Steven Universe in that there are lessons throughout the show that teach on things like compassion, forgiveness, and empathy (mostly sung through song).

THE PLOT: Is about a war horse, who amidst a massive war, was magically transported to another universe where there lives creatures that are half centaur half animal. She stumbles upon a colorful group of centaurs all with different personalities that love to sing, dance, and other whacky things. Once she discovers she can speak her journey to find her way home begins. However, despite how colorful and happy the world seems there are underlying problems that slowly beging to surface.

The two of us went into this show open-minded as we do with everything we watch. I fell in-love with it on the 2nd episode but it took my girlfriend until around the 6th episode when the storyline really began to delve deeper.

My only reason for the 9 stars is that with all shows whose demographic is children there comes a lot of very childish humor.

Darker than you think
boxchildgirl1 August 2021
While this series may seem like a directionless pastel feverdream in its earlier episodes, it certainly picks up pace later on, exploring some dark themes and tropes that I seriously didn't expect a show with its marketing to touch on. That isn't to say that a majority of the show's humor isn't immature and offbeat though, and there's a lot of children's content to slog through if you're only watching for the overarching narrative. In the same manner as Adventure Time, Centaurworld locks its more serious moments behind some truly bizarre humor and worldbuilding, and though this was a major plus for me, I can easily see it annoying older viewers.

That being said though, this show has an incredible amount of heart and talent put into it, a fact which is glaringly evident in its soundtrack and animation. The voice acting here is seriously top notch, especially the vocals, which is a lot coming from someone who usually hates when a show or movie turns musical. While some characters (cough, the centaurs, cough) were a little underdeveloped, our two leads, Horse and Wammawink, were very fun and intriguing, especially when their pasts were explored. Even though the supporting cast can be incredibly grating at times, even they have their moments, and I can see them benefiting a lot from some backstory, granted this show gets the second season I believe it deserves. The plot this season is pretty linear for the most part, but future installments promise to shake up the formula.

Please give this a try if you enjoy semi-goofy cartoons with underlying plot, especially more offbeat ones like Chowder, Adventure Time, Over The Garden Wall, and Gravity Falls. Despite its flaws, this was a really fun watch, and I'd love to see it get the support it deserves. It's a really, really weird show, and I mean that in the best way possible.

I get that the show isn't for me and probably reaches other audiences but this is so bland it feels like a remix of previous shows, just come up with something original especially for Netflix. Do better this sucks.

What a rollercoaster
asmok-118807 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
First of all, I would like to express a gratitude towards creators and cast. I love every aspect of this show since the first time I saw it and today's release of Season 2 clinched my love for it.

As a 90's kid who grew up with old 2D animated classics like Lady and the Tramp, Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, Mulan, Tarzan, Spirit or The Lion King. Disney classics which had a quality writing, cast and amazing soundtracks. Since Disney started doing 3D animated stuff, which I am not a huge fan of, I had a huge hole in my inner child's heart. Until now.

What's more, it managed to combine it with things most of us consider a taboo, but all of us were, are or will be going through. Like loneliness, sadness, loss, anxiety or depression. Especially during this hard covid time of lockdowns and deaths.

The characters are cool, but they each have their own bits of sadness and coping with it, which makes them all relatable in one way or the other. I love that the centaurworld is without our humane abstract inventions, so the characters are more pure and unique. The story is great and the way it's written is amazing as it plays with funny and feeling part of viewer's mind.

My most favorite part is a soundtrack. The songs are memorable and I love vast majority of them.

To me it feels like all my favorite cartoon films I mentioned above were sewn together to create a masterpiece, especially the ending of Season 2, the one hour long episode that sumed up all plots together.

It definitely might surprise you
annekehensley8 September 2021
This is one of those shows that definitely fits in the category of blowing your expectations out of the water. It's really hard to get into just exactly why I love this show without spoiling it, but I'll do my best to tell you instead who its best for.

If you love musicals, you'll love it. The songs are great, I actually find a lot of them to be true bangers and I listen to them regularly. The acting is supreme, and their singing is just as amazing.

If you enjoy a blend of wacky, unpredictable humor mixed with dark tones and serious themes, you'll enjoy this too! It takes time to guide the viewer between moments of endearing hilarity and more serious tones that really delve deeper into how certain characters work, or even better, how the worlds they live in tie together.

And most importantly, if you love cartoons, you'll love Centaurworld. The animation is flawlessly amazing, its bouncy and creative and never gets old. The expressions are hilariously fluid, nothing feels over-done or unnecessarily recycled, its all very fresh and beautiful.

This show is a sort of weird mix of My Little Pony, Adventure Time, Over the Garden Wall, and I've even heard some people compare some of its underlying darker themes to shows like Bojack Horseman. In general, it has a lot to offer, and very rarely feels like its wasting your time, even if not all of the jokes land. My only criticism is that I wish it had more gradual build-up and development of the characters as they lead towards the ending episodes, but we can only hope the magic and mystery continues in a second season!

This generation's Yellow Submarine
funkyandros26 October 2021
Hands down, one of the most interesting and innovative shows on Netflix. It tackles some really interesting and hard to address topics in a way that is neither preachy or over the top including self acceptance, gender issues, trauma, depression and even suicided, all the while maintaining its fun, goofy, strange foundation. I watch this with my 7 year old and we both love it. I consider this, Adventure Time and Steven Universe to be some of the better kids shows out there. Please Netflix, renew this magical little show and don't burry this like you did the OA.
