Fabulous.

Quite simply, this was an outstanding ninety minutes of drama. I actually preferred this to the first episode, which I in turn enjoyed enormously. The story was very deep and complex, but wonderfully engaging and rewarding.

It's a visual delight, it looks glorious, the setting of course is sublime, but the costumes and settings are magnificent, it's one of the most lavish dramas I've seen in some time, I say that after the disappointment of some like Vanity Fair and Sanditon, which haven't looked anywhere near this standard. Some very gritty scenes, and some moments of humour also. The best thing about this for me was the fact that it was exciting, finally a drama that's energetic and fun to watch.

I loved the theme of The Magic Flute, crime drama fans will I think, have a particular episode of Inspector Morse in mind, Masonic Mysteries, if you combined an episode of Sherlock at its peak with that Morse, this would be the result.

I'm hooked. 10/10

Even better than the first!

Characters settled in and developed further.. As the prototype Nazi Mayor of Vienna casts his influence in the background things get worse... . More intrigue than Midsommer. Bringing more culture & history to the masses... And the humour appears!

Queen Of The Night
Prismark1026 November 2019
Queen Of The Night was a better episode after the underwhelming series opener. Unfortunately the writing is still clunky.

Max Liebermann has got engaged to Clara who is understanding about his work in helping the police solve crimes. Clara wants to know more about his work and wants to help him. Unfortunately it leads her into danger.

Max's engagement party is interrupted as Oskar is called to some grisly murders. A quick arrest is made but Max fears that the wrong person is arrested. Max surmises that the killer might had been a soldier. Clara who is not getting much attention from Max gets wooed by a poetic but unscrupulous soldier.

This is a Vienna that is becoming more anti foreigner and anti semitic. This is touched on regarding the murder victims as well as Max's father to get in with the influential people of Viennese society.

There is also Max's relationship with Clara and him being spellbound by the female doctor he committed to hospital. Max cannot get her out of his mind.

Oskar is still reluctant to have Max about but appreciates his insights. Oskar is very much the Watson to Max's Sherlock.

However there is a zippiness and verve missing in the adaption of the novels. Steve Thompson lacks the input that Moffat/Gatiss bought in the Sherlock series.

The whole brotherhood thing is corny as f. Cant we have a mystery show without political opinions?

I just knew it was going to be some political message. Because if youre not a globalist, I guess youre a meanie. Generally speaking, Hollywood just cant get over hating the idea that a country needs to be loyal to its citizens, and unless the country puts their welfare above the welfare of all other people, they shouldn't ask for taxes, or loyalty. That isnt a fringe opinion. Its the opinion people have had from the time civilization began.
