Hungry in Hungary
jromanbaker10 January 2024
Odd little films like this come my way, and it could have lasted more than its short 13 minutes, and the story is boy meets boy in Budapest and one is Hungarian and the other British. British boy desires Hungarian boy, but like the fear of homosexuality in Hungary itself things do not go in the way I would have preferred. I give it six for its light hearted touch to begin with, followed by a a rather downbeat ending which I suppose was inevitable, given the weird strangeness and existential fear that seemed to pervade the city. Hetero/Homo and the divide between the two is saddening to see, and there is one last shot of a despairing look on one of the boy's faces that spoke volumes. Of the two actors the British one came over best and he acted very well, nuanced in his physical and perhaps emotional desire. To refer again to Bunuel- that obscure object of desire.
