"Die Masche mit der Liebe" may have a cheesy title and (Thomas Nennstiel as) a director who has worked on quite a few pretty bad films, but this is actually a decent effort. This came to me as a surprise as I am usually not too big on Anja Kling and Henning Baum either, but here everybody did a fine job. Even the dramatic sequences work to some extent.

The main character loses her job and gets in contact with a fraudulent company, but makes the most of it when she uses her sewing talent to actually make some money for herself and other victims of the company. Also her looks result in pretty much every man she meets to ask her out for dinner. The film gets a bit worse in the second half, but the writing team (von Cossart, Simon) does a solid job here all in all and even has some great moments, some of which include the fraudster's assistant. I wondered why Baum's character wants to go on holidays with Kling's character so quickly, but apart from some minor plot holes, also the romance part works well and is not as cringeworthy and unrealistic and many other films. Also the main character's efforts are pretty admirable as you could probably count no less than 5 people as antagonists in this film at some point. Kling brings fighting spirit to the role and this is certainly one of the better German television films of the 2000s. Recommended.

A great portrait of a strong, loyal, hard-working, independent middle-aged woman who is showing backbone despite getting stress from all sides and is therefore positively changing everyone's life. Hollywood might call this a Working Class Hero, but that would be too clichéd and striking for me. And in addition there is the charming and funny romantic banter between the characters played by Anja Kling and Henning Baum (both just great), and in such a way that it remains clear that Anja Kling's character is and remains an independent, strong woman - with and without a man. Really a neat piece of work, entertaining and still morally correct/instructive - top!
