- Sanjeet is an Electrical Engineer from Bombay, who immigrated to the United States of America with his wife, Satia. They had a young son, Vishi, who passed away years ago. Unable to get employment, Sanjeet now operates a motel and charges about $45/day. He often refuses customers who maybe unable to pay or create problems. He accordingly refuses to permit Tyrel for a room for a night, but Satia intervenes - and he not only permits but also hires him, - and lets him live amongst his other tenants, which include a suicidal author; a abused wife hunted by her angry spouse - leading to a chain of events that will alter their lives forever.—rAjOo (gunwanti@hotmail.com)
- Told over the span of three days, The Limits is about four seemingly disparate stories that fatefully come together in a seedy, run-down motel at the edge of one of Torontos roughest neighborhoods.
Kelly, a social outcast resolves to fulfill his every fantasy a week before ending his life. Tyrel, a troubled youth on the run from an inner city gang finds work with the motels East Indian proprietors, Sanjeet and Satia. Alan, a suburban family man begins an illicit affair, and Mel, an ex-prostitute whos found God is haunted by her past when her old pimp is released from prison.
These marginalized characters are all running from their past, all of them finding temporary refuge at the Maple Leaf Motel. Their intimate stories expose us to lives less ordinary, and reveal in all of us the pressures of coping when pushed to the limits. Unaware of their inter-connected roles in each others lives, a volatile event at the films end sets forth a life or death chain reaction that affects them all.
The colliding stories first present us with social and ethnic stereotypes and then challenge conventional assumptions about class and racial identity by revealing vital truths about each character.
Written by first-time director Ben Mazzotta, The Limits invites the viewer to take a closer, more insightful look. It asks - what would you do in their place, under those circumstances?
