Horror fans, get ready for a new trip to the pet cemetery. Paramount+ has revealed the first look at the upcoming prequel to Stephen King’s Pet Sematary, titled Pet Sematary: Bloodlines. The prequel will explore the origins of the cursed burial ground that brings back the dead, but not as they were before.
The first look image shows a brown dog walking on a dirt path in front of a sign that reads “Ludlow”. The dog is presumably one of the pets that will be buried and resurrected in the prequel, and the sign indicates that the story will take place in the same town as the original novel and its adaptations. The image has a vintage feel to it, suggesting that the prequel will be set in an earlier time period than the 2019 film.

Pet Sematary: Bloodlines is directed by Lindsey Beer, who is making her directorial debut.

Prior to 1989, actor Leslie Nielsen was still best known for playing heavies and villains. Even when he appeared in comedy classics like "Airplane!" in 1980 or "Police Squad!" in 1982, his comedic power was derived from his ability to stay stonefaced while absurdity explodes around him. 1989, however, saw the release of "The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!" a film adaptation of the TV show. In that film, Nielsen played the role of Lt. Frank Drebin broadly, doing a lot of mugging and pratfalls. "The Naked Gun" was an enormous hit the year it was released, and Nielsen went full-bore into slapstick roles and spoof movies after that.
During the 1990s, Nielsen appeared in a litany of gloriously silly flicks like "Spy Hard," "Wrongfully Accused," "Repossessed" (a classic), "Dracula: Dead and Loving It," two of the "Scary Movie" sequels, and many others. Not all of these films were good, but...

‘Tis the season for Hallmark Channel, Lifetime, and Netflix.
The two basic-cable channels and the streaming giant notoriously go in on made-for-tv holiday movies, and this yuletide time will be no exception. But just how crucial to their respective (and very different) businesses is this type of programming, this time of year?
For Hallmark Channel, as is the case for its namesake greeting-card business, December is truly a time to be merry. This year’s “Countdown to Christmas” will premiere 31 new holiday films on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights between Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Hallmark Channel’s primetime viewership in the fourth quarter of 2021 was 54 percent higher than in Q3, 62 percent higher than Q2, and 27 percent higher than Q1, according to Nielsen data. The first quarter comes closest to the last for a few reasons: 1) Christmas-movie catch-up viewing, and 2) Another programming stunt: “New Year New Movies!”

Netflix and movie theaters are finally playing nice — and all it took was a global pandemic to turn these antagonists into friends.
The streaming service’s upcoming zombie thriller, the Zack Snyder-directed “Army of the Dead,” will play exclusively in cinemas starting on May 14 for one week prior to its Netflix release on May 21.
Notably, Cinemark, one of the country’s biggest theater chains, has agreed to screen the movie. It is booked at 200 Cinemark locations, making “Army of the Dead” the first Netflix film to score a wide release at a major theater chain. The movie will play at roughly 600 theaters in total, including iPic, Landmark, Alamo Drafthouse, Harkins and Cinépolis. Other major circuits, specifically AMC and Regal, will not be offering the film.
Without AMC and Regal screens, “Army of the Dead” will have a much smaller footprint than recent hits like “Godzilla vs. Kong” and Bob Odenkirk’s “Nobody.

A Major Theater Chain Has Opened Its Doors to Netflix, Giving ‘Army of the Dead’ a Nationwide Launch
Before the pandemic, a Netflix film playing one of the country’s top three exhibitors would have been unthinkable. Today, Cinemark was proud to announce that Zack Snyder’s “Army of the Dead” will play most Cinemark locations May 14 ahead of its May 21 streaming release.
Per sources, it will be joined by other circuits for a total of around 600 screens. These include Harkins, Landmark, Alamo, Marcus, Cinepolis, and iPic. Of those, Cinemark will be the largest with around 250. Theaters will have the option of playing the film beyond the one-week exclusive theatrical run.
Beyond the significance of a blockbuster director becoming a late-breaking addition to an anemic release calendar, this represents a Netflix breakthrough. The company spent years reaching out to theaters and found major resistance from all but Landmark and a handful of other independent companies. While studios like Warner Bros. and Universal found nationwide availability even as they...

It hasn't been the easiest of years—do we win a prize for Understatement of 2020 and 2021?—and at times, when the daily grind was a bit much, you've just got to have some proof that everything's going to turn out alright. No such thing is guaranteed, of course, but there are certain people you can watch, in movies or on TV, who are clinically proven to help you believe in all the good stuff again. You know, things like love, devotion, soul mates—the whole romantic ball of wax. For instance, there was a reason why viewers were cheering for Netflix's The Christmas Chronicles 2 back in November—and it wasn't just because it meant the...

Pixar’s ethereal “Soul” and Cartoon Saloon’s exquisitely hand-drawn “Wolfwalkers” — the two animated Oscar frontrunners — both grabbed 10 nominations each at Asifa-Hollywood’s 48th Annie Awards (to be streamed live on April 16). Pixar collected another seven nominations from “Onward” to dominate the feature competition.
“Soul” and “Wolfwalkers” are both expected to come away with the top prize from their respective best feature and best indie feature categories, but they compete head to head for direction (Pete Docter and Kemp Powers vs. Tomm Moore and Ross Stewart), FX, character animation, character design, production design, score, storyboarding, and writing. “Soul” was additionally nominated for editorial, and “Wolfwalkers” for voice acting. But Jamie Foxx, who voiced “Soul’s” jazz pianist, Joe Gardner, was surprisingly overlooked.

Mark Zoradi, CEO of major exhibitor Cinemark and a former longtime Disney executive, sees some familiar elements on the summer release calendar, which he sees as a potential Covid-19 recovery turning point.
“The last weekend in May, in that traditional beginning of summer, you have Cruella from Disney and you have F9 from Universal and you have Infinite from Paramount,” he said. “So, you’ve got three big movies.” The July Fourth weekend, he added, has Minions: The Rise of Gru and Top Gun: Maverick.
Given those studio commitments, declining virus infection rates and ramped-up vaccinations, Zoradi said, “We’re optimistic that we’re going to be able to light up these theaters again come this summer.”
Zoradi and COO and CFO Sean Gamble offered their read of the market and detailed Cinemark’s “Project Phoenix” comeback effort during a conference call with Wall Street analysts this morning. One obvious key is more theaters reopening.

This year’s Oscars have set a new record for the largest number of entries ever in the Best Original Song category, but the 105 eligible songs do not include Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’ “(If Only You Could) Save Me,” a 1930s-style big band song from “Mank” that was recently nominated for the second annual Society of Composers and Lyricists Awards.
The song is heard briefly coming from a radio in the background of one scene and plays for only about 40 seconds. Academy rules require “a clearly audible, intelligible, substantive rendition of both lyric and melody,” and the song was judged to not fulfill that requirement.
Other songs that didn’t make the list, although they were thought to be in the running, include “Uh Oh” from “Promising Young Woman” and “Boss Bitch” from “Birds of Prey.” Even without those, the list of eligible songs tops 100 for the first time...

Disney and Pixar’s “Soul” was the most viewed streaming title during the week of Christmas, topping other Netflix original shows and films and even the juggernaut “The Office” in its final full week on Netflix before moving over to Peacock.
Nielsen’s new SVOD Content Ratings reports that “Soul” was viewed for 1.669 billion minutes during the week of December 21-27, with “The Office,” “Bridgerton” and the Netflix original film “The Midnight Sky” starring George Clooney ranking close behind. “Soul” dropped on Disney+ on Christmas Day.
It’s worth noting that the other major Christmas Day release, “Wonder Woman 1984” on HBO Max, was not included in Nielsen’s count. Currently Nielsen only tracks streaming content from Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, Hulu and Netflix. That film though played in theaters and on HBO Max day and date and did well enough to warrant a third film in the franchise being fast-tracked.

Netflix will report fourth-quarter earnings Tuesday afternoon, closing the book on a coronavirus-altered 2020 and setting the tone for a more competitive marketplace in 2021.
The streaming leader has recently been the first entertainment company to report quarterly results, kicking off each weeks-long earnings season. Parents of new streaming rivals like Disney+, HBO Max, Apple TV+, Peacock and Discovery+ will soon also report numbers and shed some light on their progress.
As the global kingpin with 14 years of streaming under its belt, Netflix comes into earnings day with 195 million subscribers, more than double the count for fast-rising Disney+ and other competitors. The company projects it will add 6 million total subscribers in the fourth quarter, reaching 201 million. That would be an improvement over the 2.2 million it added in the third quarter and would be up 3% on a sequential basis. The Crown repeated atop the chart with more than 2.2 billion total minutes of viewing from November 23 to 30. The Nielsen chart, which operates on a lengthy delay, measures only the viewing occurring in the U.S. via a TV screen. (See the full top 10 below.)
In Chronicles 2, which drew a robust 1.5 billion minutes of streaming, Kurt Russell reprised his role as Santa Claus and Goldie Hawn returned as Mrs. Claus. Chris Columbus, known for hits like Home Alone, directed. Even though it didn’t finish No. 1, the film’s showing was unusually strong.
Series, given their sheer volume, are by definition viewed more than feature films on streaming platforms, but films can be effective drivers of interest and awareness.

As the embodiment of kindness, generosity, and Yuletide beneficence, Santa Claus presents some mighty big black boots, much less a red suit, for any actor to fill. But jolly old Saint Nicholas has appeared in the movies for as long as the movies have existed, and here are some of our favorite actors who’ve steered the sleigh (not counting Billy Bob Thornton and anyone else who has played a guy who is pretending to be Santa):
Kurt Russell in “The Christmas Chronicles” (2018) and “The Christmas Chronicles 2” (2020): There’s more than a little bit of Russell’s trucker character from “Big Trouble in Little China” in his take on Father Christmas, but that blue-collar bravado and dad-bod energy make this character, in the words of critic Nathan Rabin, “a Santa who f–ks.”
Jim Broadbent, “Arthur Christmas” (2011): In this delightful animated adventure from Aardman, Broadbent plays...

It’s only fitting that in 2020 — the year of the coronavirus — Netflix’s top titles include stand-up comedies, “sad movies” and “home baking shows.”
The streaming giant released year-end viewing trends on Thursday that also showed that October was the biggest month for comedy consumption, with audiences seeking to quell pre-election anxiety. “Hubie Halloween,” “The Wrong Missy,” “Space Force,” “Holidate” and “Kevin Hart: Zero Fucks Given” were the most popular comedy titles of the year.
In the three weeks following George Floyd’s death at the hands of Minneapolis police, viewing soared for titles that reflected the Black experience: “13th” saw the most growth, with viewing up more than 5,000%. “LA 92,” “Dear White People,” “Time: The Kalief Browder Story” and “American Son” views also skyrocketed.
Netflix users also gravitated toward twice as much romance in 2020 as the year prior, with films “The Kissing Booth 2,” “Princess Switch: Switched Again” and...

Netflix has revealed some color about its subscribers’ viewing habits during 2020.
The streamer saw foreign-language dramas such as Spain’s The Platform and Germany’s Barbarians boom, romance titles doubled in popularity and action titles such as Extraction and Cobra Kai flexed their muscles over the last twelves.
Some of the most interesting data provided by Netflix as part of its What We Watched 2020 report was around the pandemic and civil unrest over the summer. In March, as Covid-19 was starting to ravage the world outside of China, viewers were searching for home baking shows with almost a 50% rise from the previous month – a boon for the likes of Nailed It! and The Great British Bake Off.
The following month, searches for sad movies spiked nearly 30%, while subscribers were also calling out for stand-up shows between March and April. October was our biggest month for comedy viewing generally. Hubie Halloween,...

Can cinemas play day-and-date releases from Warner Bros after continually refusing to show Netflix films?
The big circuits have to be feeling really stupid now: If they had only made a deal with Netflix last year on Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman at a 45-day window instead of emphatically rejecting one, perhaps this looming apocalypse brought on by WarnerMedia would never have happened. Netflix was willing to play ball with exhibition, agreeing to a limited theatrical window before a movie’s premiere on its streaming service.
Exhibition, along with the National Association of Theatre Owners’ muscle, was clear it would never waver and play films that were day and date, but now cinema owners are in hasty retreat. We’ve gone from a global $42.5 billion record global box office record last year to an exhibition industry that has zero leverage.

Who, in the music world, is the true queen of Christmas? There are going to be some fan bases with some very strong opinions about that, it goes without saying. But for some of us, Christmas is Love… Darlene Love, the principal voice (on songs both credited and uncredited) of Phil Spector’s 1963 compilation “A Christmas Gift for You.” Your sleigh mileage may vary, but between the pair of Love-sung songs that bookend that collection — “White Christmas” and the original “Christmas” — and an addition to the canon with 1992’s “All Alone on Christmas,” there’s a case to be made that Love is singularly responsible for the three greatest single Christmas records of all time.
Love is highly visible again this holiday season with a couple of projects. In Netflix’s “The Christmas Chronicles 2,” she shares a full-scale musical number, “The Spirit of Christmas,” with Kurt Russell, who plays Santa,...

While Netflix’s 2018 holiday film, The Christmas Chronicles, didn’t have a clear antagonist—it was more about saving Christmas—the 2020 sequel pits Santa Claus (Kurt Russell) against an elfin protégé-turned-human-rival, Belsnickel (Julian Dennison). But while Belsnickel, with his odd garb and anti-Claus vendetta, might initially seem not to fit into The Christmas Chronicles 2, the character is actually rooted in Yuletide tradition.
According to German folklore that dates back to at least the 18th century, Belsnickel is a foil of sorts to Saint Nicholas, or Santa Claus: a disheveled man dressed in tattered furs and dirty clothes, often wearing a mask with a long tongue and carrying a switch, he visits homes a few weeks before Christmas to check up on children’s behavior. Belsnickel’s name is a combination of belzen and Nickel, a nickname for the German Nikolaus.

Spoiler Alert: Santa Claus blows a mean sax.
The high point of Netflix’s The Christmas Chronicles 2 comes at its least festive moment. The young and grieving teen Kate Pierce (Darby Camp) is mistaken for a runaway and taken away by airport authorities–while being lost in time–all the flights on Logan International Airport’s big board turn from hour-long delays to outright cancellations, and joy in that small part of Boston drops to 7 percent. People are all up in each other’s grills, nerves are frayed, and complimentary hotel stays are not going to cut it. They are not a merry bunch. If ever there was a time for a holiday miracle, this would be it. Only now, when things are at their darkest, does a flustered ticket agent named Grace (Darlene Love) reach for the public address microphone–and deliver “The Spirit of Christmas.”

Two recent films shared top honors this week on leading VOD charts. Of top significance is the early success of “Let Him Go” (Focus), one of several current releases from Universal and its specialty unit that is available for $19.99 only three weeks after its theatrical debut. “The New Mutants” (Disney), which was released in August and has a lower $5.99 cost placed #1 on two charts.
“Let Him Go,” a contemporary Western starring Kevin Costner and Diane Lane, soared on FandangoNow and Apple TV, two charts that provide the most immediate response. The former ranks by dollars paid; the latter lists by number of transactions. Placing ahead of films with much lower prices suggests very strong interest and hints that the Universal/Focus strategy could be working. The film also placed #6 at Google Play. With an earlier deadline, Spectrum usually lags behind the others; expect it to show up next week.

When re-watching the “Harry Potter” movies, it’s easy to forget just how important Chris Columbus‘s adaptation of the first two books were, and just how much the franchise changed after he left. Turns out, Columbus wanted to return for the final two films in the franchise, but didn’t when David Yates decided to take on the job himself.

This week brings the release of two very different Christmas movies with Santa Claus as the main character, although they do both star actors who played a series of iconic roles throughout the 1980s. Mel Gibson’s Fatman is a dark and R-rated spin on the holiday genre, while Kurt Russell‘s The Christmas Chronicles 2 is an altogether more whimsical and heartwarming tale.
In fact, the aforementioned sequel is guaranteed to be one of the most popular titles on Netflix throughout the festive season, and has already gone down a storm with subscribers. Not only is it the follow-up to a movie that brought in 20 million streams in the first week it was available two years ago, but co-writer and director Chris Columbus knows a thing or two about crafting Christmas classics after scripting Gremlins and helming Home Alone.

Stuck inside on Black Friday, stuffed with turkey, what are Americans supposed to do to distract themselves? All year, it’s been a battle of the streamers to fill the void left by cinemas, and this week finds nearly all the big brands are stepping up with big titles to serve the stay-at-home set.
Netflix debuts Oscar contender “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” in theaters this week — featuring a terrific final performance from Chadwick Boseman. The film won’t be available to subscribers until mid-December, though Netflix will serve up Kurt-and-Goldie holiday special “The Christmas Chronicles 2” — as well as “Dolly Parton’s Christmas on the Square.” Plus, “Hillbilly Elegy” hits the service this week, too, following a limited theatrical run.
For family audiences, Disney Plus launches a “Black Beauty” remake. (Those feeling courageous enough to visit theaters can give rival DreamWorks Animation a shot with a sequel to caveman cartoon “The Croods.

Christmas is a stressful time of year for many people.
There are gifts to buy, family to see, and cars to dig out of the snow. Thankfully, the holiday cheer makes up for a lot of it. And when holiday cheer can’t get you all the way there, there are Christmas movies to make up the rest.
Netflix has the deepest roster of Christmas movies of all the major streaming options. So we’ve compiled a list of the best Christmas movies available on Netflix.
Be sure to point out any we’ve missed!
Black Mirror: White Christmas
Those looking for Christmas cheer won’t find it here. Black Mirror isn’t necessarily known for its happy endings and it’s 2014 Christmas special, “White Christmas” is no different.
Still, there is an audience out there that definitely wants this level of Scroogery. Plus it stars Jon Hamm! “White Christmas” follows three seemingly disparate stories.

Chris Columbus has forgotten more about how to make satisfying family movies than most people will ever know, and nothing will ever change the fact that “Home Alone,” “Mrs. Doubtfire,” and “Adventures in Babysitting” did more to shape millennial identity (or at least the BuzzFeed quizzes about it) than historians will ever formally recognize. With the chintzy but foundational first two films in the “Harry Potter” franchise, it could be argued that Columbus exerted a seismic impact on the next generation as well. We’re talking about a guy whose cultural relevance somehow managed to outlast that of the other iconic figure who shares his name, despite the fact that only one of them was responsible for “Bicentennial Man.”
And so it’s downright bizarre to see Columbus return to the director’s chair for a big holiday movie that won’t leave any footprint whatsoever; a joyless schlep up...

It’s almost December, and that means it’s time for everyone to begin decking the halls and putting up their Christmas trees. But if you need a little nudge to help get you into the spirit, you can always count on Netflix to provide some fun holiday-related movies and shows. While nearly every Santa Claus-centric movie concerns the potential loss of Christmas, arguably the fear of missing the holiday is most keenly felt in 2020. Netflix’s The Christmas Chronicles (the 2018 film that kicked off this jolly old franchise) indeed tapped into that when it starred two kids learning to believe in Santa, or else; and Chris Columbus’ The Christmas Chronicles 2 strikes at the source of Yuletide cheer again with a plot to destroy Santa’s Village at the North Pole. But what could be the root cause that’s so extreme as to endanger the entire magical foundation of Christmas for the foreseeable future? Apparently, teenage angst.

Exclusive: A year ago at this time, a stink was raised by the studios and NATO over Netflix and its audacity to actually crunch the theatrical window with The Irishman. And a deal was on the table with AMC, but in the end, the streamer wanted a more limited time in theaters — far less than 45 days.
Fast-forward to now, and many wonder, well, what happens to Amazon and Netflix now with the WarnerMedia HBO Max theatrical day-and-date release of Wonder Woman 1984? Certainly they’ll push for their due in having the big circuits like AMC and Cinemark play their fare on a crunched or zero window. Why should Warner Bros. have all the fun?

Not so long ago, there were three or four new Christmas movies a year. Now it seems like there are 30 or 40, and if you’re wondering how that assembly line of holiday product gets filled, the answer is: by recycling endless variations on the same yuletide fairy-tale kitsch and we’re-all-one-big-nettlesome-Christmas-family glorified-sitcom cheer.
Take “The Christmas Chronicles 2.” Directed by Chris Columbus, with his leftover-’80s synthetic-is-the-new-real life’s-a-snow-globe touch, it’s a movie in which Santa Claus, played with winning macho bluster by Kurt Russell, has to save Christmas from the depredations of an angry fallen elf. But it’s also a family-therapy movie; a tale about the logistics of Christmas set at a North Pole that’s like a resort shopping mall filled with snow that looks like a blanket of Ivory-soap shavings; a “Raiders of the Lost Santa” sleigh-race-through-the-air action movie; and a comedy bauble that’s...

Santa’s back, and Goldie’s got him, as the MGM marketing department of yore might have put it, and while Netflix’s “The Christmas Chronicles 2” hits pretty much every note you’d expect, it throws in enough surprises, and deep dives into Yuletide lore, to keep it from being mere tinsel.
In a year when most of us won’t be able to spend the holidays with our families, the film offers a reunion or two: Hollywood power spouses Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn co-star in a movie for the first time since the original “Overboard,” and Christmas royalty Chris Columbus returns to the director’s chair after producing the first “Chronicles” in 2018.
This time, Columbus co-writes with Matt Lieberman (who also wrote the original), and the two of them have clearly done their Christmas research, crafting a storyline that weaves in everything from Santa’s Turkish origins...

Disney is still ploughing through its back catalogue – which is pretty massive thanks to its acquisition of Fox – for viable remakes and reboots. After deciding to cherry-pick 1990’s Christmas classic Home Alone for the Disney+ reboot treatment late last year, and announcing that Jojo Rabbit’s Archie Yates, Ellie Kemper (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt) and comedian Rob Delaney would star in it, the machine didn’t stop for objections.
Chris Columbus, who helmed the original Home Alone, definitely has some though.
“Nobody got in touch with me about it, and it’s a waste of time as far as I’m concerned,” he told Insider. “What’s the point? I’m a firm believer that you don’t remake films that have had the longevity of Home Alone. You’re not going to create lightning in a bottle again. It’s just not going to happen. So why do it? It...

In a new interview with Parade, the couple revealed they are focused on living a happy life focused on family. As Goldie shared with the publication, "It's not about what you do, it's how you do it." Another secret to the happy relationship? A whole lot of humor. "Goldie can literally physically walk away sometimes and make me laugh," Kurt confessed. "She's funny by...

Vanessa Hudgens is a triple threat in the new trailer for Netflix’s “The Princess Switch 2: Switched Again,” set to premiere on Nov. 19.
In “The Princess Switch” sequel, Hudgens will not only reprise her lead roles of Duchess Margaret and Princess Stacy, but also portray a third doppelganger, Margaret’s cousin Fiona. When Margaret unexpectedly inherits the throne to Montenaro, she also finds trouble in her long-distance relationship with her boyfriend, Kevin. Princess Stacy of Belgravia comes to the rescue, stepping in to help save the Duchess’ relationship.
“After I read it I thought, ‘Ooh man, this is going to be a lot of work,'” Hudgens told Entertainment Weekly. “Three of me? Me, myself, and I! I was very excited to create yet another character and had such a blast doing so. I was told they wrote in a new character but I had no idea how much fun it would actually be.
