Disappointing film that doesn't deliver
Corpus_Vile1 May 2010
Mitchell (Nick Rendell) is a hard man debt collector who thinks he's hit it big time when he stumbles across £100,000 while collecting a debt from addled drug dealer Hopper (Italian horror veteran Giovanni Lombardo Radice)

However, it turns out that the money belongs to his new boss, gangster Curtis Boswell (victor D Thorn) who promptly sends Mitchell to find his loot. So begins a nightmare for Mitchell, who must stay one step ahead of his crime colleagues if he wants to stay alive...

A Day Of Violence is nothing special trash, and I've no problem with trash per se- as long as it's entertaining, but unfortunately, it isn't. Shot on video, it has unconvincing performances from Victor Thorn as the rather well spoken crime boss, as well as clichéd hard men in black suits spouting pretty woeful dialogue. It has one or two nice gore scenes and director Darren Ward's heart is in the right place, as the film is nicely exploitative. It just isn't very good, and you won't really care what happens to the characters anyway.

A Highly disappointing and mediocre film, it's probably best watched drunk, or else not watched at all, because nobody's missing anything here at all.

Mitchell Parker lies dead on a morgue slab.

In life, 'Mitchell' served the low ranks of Debt Collectors, surrounded by all the filth and scum that the world had to offer. He thought his luck was in, when on a routine collection he stumbles across 100,000 in cash, hidden in the sofa of one of his clients.

dark and haunting past hangs over the head of 'Mitchell Parker', one that will lead him on a journey of redemption and ultimately sacrifice. Hunted by the gang whose Money he has stolen. He must evade capture and use the money to rid himself of his demons once and for all. Witness his last days of life.

Kind of a bad Brit flick that starts like a porn film. Lots of screaming, but little of interest goes on.

Take it or leave it. I don't think it really delivers.

gory mafia flick
trashgang17 February 2011
Warning: Spoilers
This is one of those flicks you love or hate. If you are into suspense or a good thriller forget it, if you want to see the red stuff flowing copious then this is your flick. If you watch closely you will see the Italian horror legend Giovanni Lombardo Radice (pseudonym John Morghen) as drug dealer Hopper. The acting is mediocre, some do it a bit too theatrical or some over the top. The problem for some is the accent used. The movie doesn't have any subtitles so to understand the slang and dialect you really have to listen very carefully. But for a low budget the effects used are really good. It's a gorefest and some scene's it's only about shooting but the removal of a cock will turn some faces away from the screen. i will not recommend it for the easily offended. The movie starts immediately with nudity from male and female. But I liked it, I have seen other mafia flicks from the UK but this surely delivers better acting and the gore you are watching for. Be advised that it isn't a horror but a straight in your face flick.

pitiful
simonpcpearson23 September 2010
There is nothing good to say about this movie. It's another pointless, pitiful and deeply unpleasant movie by Darren Ward. He has been making this type of thing for years and he hasn't improved since the truly awful Sudden Fury many years ago.

Its very very cheap. Production values are poor. The lighting is at times to dark to see what is going on and the sound makes it impossible to hear what is being said. However given the terrible level of acting and writing and directing involved this is probably not much of a loss.

There are some positive reviews here and on other sites which can only be by people connected to the movie as no-one could possibly find this to be a 10/10 movie.

Avoid.

Why?
ratcityfilmsociety31 March 2010
Warning: Spoilers
This film starts right off the bat with a hot sex scene, I feared that it might be the high point of the film. I just didn't realize how low it would go and quickly it would get there. What didn't go quickly was the horrifically graphic castration by garden shears scene that followed, which seemed to drag for some 7-10 minutes (I'm not watching it again just to time it). I watch a lot of films, this offended like few others ever have. These guys were obviously proud of the prosthetic (I hope) scrotum and testicles, which got thrown around and a featured in several close up shots. I feel scarred for life by that interminable scene. The rest of the movie? Where it wasn't predictable, it turned on preposterous premises... In the end the whole movie was that savage and pointless (in terms of story development) celebration of emasculation. Why?

i've seen some rubbish in my time

Warning: Spoilers
This is one of the worst films ever made. There are a lot of films on the IMDb that have suffered that accusation but in this case it could actually could be true.

The first sign that this is a cut and paste oater made with no care is the casting. Various rent-a-thug types play various rent-a-thugs ...badly.

These people always appear doing the same thing in zero budget British trash. They're not actors and they should stop pretending they are.

There is no plot, no character and the dialogue is embarrassing. Real actors couldn't say it convincingly let alone the talentless no-hopers here.

Despite opening with a sex scene and a couple of very violent and graphic torture scenes this is a very boring film. There are no good points.

hated it!

Warning: Spoilers
I don't know if I've ever seen a worse film than this. I can't remember one.

The title says it all..it's just plot less, pointless violence. Given that the film opens with a main character dead on a slab we know how it will end which robs the film of any potential twists or suspense it might have had.

There are no twists in the writing and the direction is pathetic. The acting is downright embarrassing. No-one involved can act. None of the characters are likable.

The dialogue is awful and consists mainly of profanity. I am not easily offended and swear a lot in real life, but used constantly profanity becomes repetitive and irritating.

I can't think of any reason to watch this. Don't waste your money.

Well ...

Warning: Spoilers
First, bit of advice to girl that did nude scene. There are movies where you can do it and people will think 'ok, it was needed for the scene', and then there are movies where its completely pointless and you should not have done it as it does nothing for you. This movie is the latter.

This movie is worse than "I against I". Unbelievable. I really did not think I was going to run into movie that deserves for me to say that this year. I used to love Brit movies, but in recent years it looks like everything made there that reaches North American market is just garbage.

All great Brit actors like Vinnie Jones, Jason Statham and Tim Roth seem to be mostly in USA movies now (I guess they pay far better than UK ones)and new talent in UK movies seems not to have a clue how to act.

Don't forget your...map

Hilarious, raucous, hyper 'masculine' non-sense. Made for less than a DVD rental price but, ironically, not worth the price of entry. Credit for making it, less credit for the end product. The most savage, debasing element of this flaccid, severed member is it's understanding of Southampton's geography. Shirley High Street isn't that long.

Violence is a lesser word to describe it...
searchanddestroy-130 January 2012
Warning: Spoilers
I rarely saw a so brutal, sadistic and fierce movie; that is not genuinely a horror movie I mean. Not a slasher but an ordinary British underworld tale, in the line of LONG GOOD Friday, GET CARTER, FREIGHT, RISE OF THE FOOT SOLDIER and I forget many ones. The kind of movies UK gives us so many since twenty years now, especially since the Tarantino style rise.

I agree with the other comments which say that is garbage, meaningless and full of gratuitous violence. I admit that I was afraid of what I was about to watch. I was afraid to have spent my money in not the right way. But, what a surprise, I enjoyed that film. Because there is not real hero here. The lead is not a superman after all. On the contrary. He is a hood, OK, but for whom the audience may feel some empathy. The torture sequences, and not gunfights, are not for the squeamish, not for people around the table with the whole family eating poultry for dinner. No folks. It is REALLY a film with unbearable scenes in it. I saw many 70's exploitation and very violent movies, but not like this one. As far as I can remember. But maybe some user is able to say more, a more brutal feature. Why not?

Garbage, yes, I respect this critic, but I loved this film.

Period.

I'll Be A Little More Lenient Than The Others
redrobin62-321-20731116 February 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Is it important that you catch this little British ditty? Not really. It's really nothing more than a collegiate flick for a student's final. The acting was poor and could've easily been done by the filmmaker's extended family. This version of 'A Day of Violence' had some colour issues, too. The general hue was de-saturated browns; blood looks black or dark brown and the general lighting was sepia-toned, even black and white in some areas.

Yes, the film was uneven, but something about it did grasp my attention. Maybe it was the ultra violence. I believe this is the first time I've seen an upside down man have his nards removed by garden shears. Gruesome, indeed. Kinda looked real, too. It's the scene that was missing from 'Grotesque'. I guess in Japan they have very little prosthetic penises so you have to make do with what's there.

This "film" looked like it was shot digitally. I do wish they either improve that medium or get rid of it altogether. It just doesn't work for movies. It makes the presentation look way too amateurish. I do give the movie some points for editing; at least it wasn't slow paced once the action started. Oh, well. It wasn't a total waste. I do enjoy those British accents, eh wot?

Extremely graphic gangster thriller, not for the faint of heart
Indyrod22 September 2010
Warning: Spoilers
Darren Ward directed this extremely violent gangster bloodfest, and he certainly delivers the goods. The story is about Mitchell (Nick Rendell), a money collector dispatched by a gangster boss to find some missing money. Movie begins with a really really hot sex scene, between Mitchell and his Wife, and then moves 24 months ahead with him lying dead on a morgue slab, with a huge hole in his stomach. The story is told by the dead man and recounts what happened to cause his gruesome death. The gangster boss believes he was robbed and when Mitchell goes to the guy they think did it, he finds the money and cuts the guys throat open, with lots of blood spray. Mitchell keeps the money, and then is called upon by an even meaner gangster boss to find his 100K, which Mitchell now has. This starts a rampage of some of the most extremely violent graphic bloody kill scenes you are likely to see in any movie. Ward really sets forth to create a splatterfest of the highest order. He succeeds with some great shootouts and one particular torture scene of a guy hanging by his feet from the ceiling. After beating the guy with clubs, for stealing money from the boss, what follows knocked me out of my chair. I've seen it all, believe me, but what they do to this guy made me flinch and is not easily forgotten, especially by men. Extremely bloody, gory, and Ward makes sure you see it all in nice bright bloody color. Every step of the way Mitchell takes with his psychopath partner leads to more kills, and more graphically detailed blood and guts. After the crime boss finds out it was Mitchell himself that stole his money, everybody goes after him. Big time shootouts, more kills, and I thought I was in heaven. There is NO WAY this cut Mr. Ward sent me will ever see the light of day in an American theater. But he intends on releasing it uncut and unrated, so lucky for everybody that likes this genre, you'll get to see what I saw in the screener. This is a very very brutal movie, but top notch acting by all involved, and great photography, make this a must-see for you fans of excessive violent movies. I didn't notice any CGI, just plain old very well staged practical makeup effects make this one a joy. There's a little Guy Ritchie, some Tarantino (ala Reservoir Dogs), but mostly Darren Ward (Sudden Fury) that creates a very memorable graphic gangster thriller. This movie is NOT to be missed, it scores on all levels. I loved it, and will buy it for sure, just to hear Mr. Wards commentary.

Does what it says on the tin
stevencoombs5 June 2020
I dont understand the pitiful 1 star review? I'm no professional film critic and I either like or dislike films without it changing my life.

Darrens films are a low budget gore fest based on his passion for the genre including Italian 70s style film making.

When you have such a small budget and limited access to seasoned professionals you can only work with what you get.

The guys do a good job for their ability and I didnt expect anything else.

Watching sudden fury from 1998 in 2020 does look a bit dated and the acting was a bit ropey back then.

ADOV Is a much better quality picture with newer tech and the acting is a lot better.

Darren's films are no worse than the Rise of the foot soldier style franchise which use more seasoned pros and a bigger budget and I find them watchable even if the so called critics dont.

I enjoyed Blair witch 1st time round too not knowing was fake ;-)

People who watch Darren's 3 films need to appreciate what he is trying to achieve and respect the efforts of someone realising his dream and has something to be proud of.

Crap
csigrissom-575068 July 2022
My headline says it all. A crap movie. When Mitchell gets out of the shower he appears to be bone dry. Acting is abysmal. I stopped watching after 28 mins. The 'Boss' and his cronies were terrible actors.

An excellent combination of violence, gangsters and lashings of gore!!!
flashmush19 December 2009
I had the pleasure of seeing this at it's premiere. And I feel compelled to comment on the quality of this excellent effort from Mr Ward and his merry crew. The story may not be the most original, but I feel that the execution was flawless, especially considering the budget limitations. The quality of the cast also helps lift the film from the gaggle of other low budget films available. Particularly of note was (Dr)Nick Rendell's excellent portrayal of the morally conflicted main character Mitchell - I look forward to seeing more of his work! The special effects used in the film also deserve applause (I think they may well have won an award), Particularly in the film's centrepiece scene (I won't spoil it for you). Just be warned - it is not for the feint of heart!! All in all, if you like a good old fashioned gangster film laced with lashings of both violence and gore then look no further than this superb effort. 10 out of 10. A word to the director - How about a follow up to the also excellent Sudden Fury? Please Mr Ward, Please!!

Extremely brutal and atmospheric. I can't understand the bad reviews. Who of course expects a film like that of Tarantino or Guy should rather fit.

BrokenBeats941 October 2022
Wow such big movie yet was visceral it was incredible funny yet serious lot of drug and violence and oh wow the penis and the woman with the funny laugh haha me and my sister enjoyed this incredibly much so I nearly peed my pant the surround sound made me feel like I was in Southampton and this is realistic but I do also live in Southampton and it's a nice Britain city that more people should buy the food from! In fact me and my sister are going for a meal and then visitin the nightclub when the big guns were and hopefully I don't get shot in the bum like the silly Italian man does. Glad to see my Italian heritage in a proud display of independence cinema. Music made me feel like I was in the PS2! Wow.
