Not terrible, but didn't do all that much for me

The Count of Monte Cristo is such a great story, so I'd see any adaptation of it regardless of its quality. Prior to this, I'd never seen a Blye Migicovsky production. Though I do hope that the rest of the output is better than this version of The Count of Monte Cristo. The voice acting is decent and the incidental music is whimsical and rousing, but sadly that is all the praise I can give it. The animation I just didn't care for, the character designs are crude and all so angular, the backgrounds lack detail and are very flatly and uninterestingly coloured. The songs are many, but they lack charm in the melodies and are just not that memorable. The story is not that disrespectful to the original story, however it doesn't have its sense of excitement and thrills. Instead, it is rather dully paced and for the target audience who are unfamiliar with the story, great as it is, hard to follow also. The dialogue lacks wit, the action is rather clumsy and the characters are just not interesting, when stripped of their complexity they come across as stereotypes. All in all, didn't do much for me sadly. 3/10 Bethany Cox
