Viserys is a dragon rider. He was the last person to ride the dragon Balerion, known as the Black Dread. Balerion was the dragon ridden by Aegon the Conqueror during the Targaryen conquest of Westeros. Balerion had been the only surviving dragon from Old Valyria, having hatched before the Targaryens fled to Dragonstone. Unlike many other Targaryen dragons, Balerion died of old age rather than in battle. He lived for around 200 years.
In the Sept, Alicent and Rhaenyra kneel before a statue and light votive offerings. The statue is the Mother, who represents one aspect of the godhead worshiped in the Faith of the Seven. The others are the Father, the Maiden, the Crone, the Warrior, the Smith and the Stranger, with the latter representing death and the unknown. The Faith of the Seven is the dominant religion practiced in the southern areas of Westeros, including King's Landing.
The episode takes place six months after the events of the previous episode.
First seen in this episode, Viserys' scale model of Valyria is the first time the ancient city has been seen intact on screen in any HBO adaptation, as the city was shown in ruins on Game of Thrones (2011).
Rhaenyra's mount is a yellow she-dragon named Syrax.
