Pretty good, but that ending...
afero-244817 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
That ending reminds me of seasons 7 and 8 of GOT, where main characters were put in situations where they should have died but they got miraculously saved. Hopefully this kind of plot armor does not get repeated again, since one of the things that made the earlier seasons of GOT so good was that they managed to make us fear for the main characters because their lives were actually in danger.

I'm not saying Daemon should've died right there, that would be a huge waste of his character. I'm just saying that he shouldn't have been put in such an unrealistic situation at all. It makes his plot armor too obvious.

Aside from that this episode was pretty good.

It's getting better but...
asterblasterth6 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Explain this to me. So Daemon and Sea snake have been waging war against crabfeeder for years. They are losing badly, they are desperate, Daemon sends his brother a letter for help and when he answers all of a sudden we get this mighty Daemon who just walks up to Crabfeeder starts butchering an army, gets shot and right at the last moment sea snake comes in.

If it's that easy and crabfeeder is that gullible how come the war has lasted for years? Couldn't they come up with that plan a lot sooner? You know when the situation wasn't that desperate and you had a lot more men still living?

The battle scenes were great by itself but that whole part made little to no sense. Apart from that it was a good episode.

Wow!!

Warning: Spoilers
Perfect combination of political drama and gory battle. The last 10 minutes were awesome! Daemon's character is being masterfully played by Matt Smith. He and Rhaenyra are both bad***. It feels so good to be back in Westeros...somehow, this show feels so right. It's giving the same aura that GOT gave, which makes watching scenes like the hunt so enjoyable: it may not be action packed, but it just feels right - it feels like game of thrones, which is something I have wanted since season 7. Considering follow up series typically don't live to the hype, this is a refreshing start so far. Not what I expected. Excited for next week!

Amazing episode
xCloudy4 September 2022
This is definitely my favourite episode so far. The acting was as always outstanding. Without giving anything away, I want to say that there were a couple of unexpected moments through the episode. These moments only made it more exciting to watch. I think that they did a great Job with the time jump. Personally I was a bit scared about the time jumps, but this one was done in a proper way. You immediately knew what happened in those 3 years and it didn't get confusing to me. The most exciting part of this episode was definitely the battle in the Stepstones. The directing and fighting was phenomenal. After watching this one, I am even more curious about what's going to happen in the next! Definitely worth watching.

It gets better and better!!!

Warning: Spoilers
It's almost Impossible for an hour long episode to be all battles and action. Many thought it would but I don't think they were bored as House of the dragon handled it well. Mixing action with drama by keeping us expectant of the war on stepping stones and intriguing us in the hunt scenes and Viserys' prophecies and taking us deeper and deeper into the world of Fire and blood.

Many of us already know how the story ends but what this series does is make me wonder if it will all end the same and has me on the edge of my seat wondering if anyone is going to die even though deep down we know that most likely they won't. This is the house of the dragon.

A Fight Scene is Only as Strong as the Writing
lovemichaeljordan5 September 2022
The politics and family drama is very intricate and intriguing. The same can not be said about the big battle sequence. It's very well made and it looks phenomenal but it's way too predictable which honestly makes it underwhelming. Spectacular things happen on the screen but there is no tension or stakes which makes it kinda meh. A good fight scene is only as good as the writing.

It is still a great episode. The relationships are very intricate and it's understandable why every character acts the way they do. Everyone has their own agenda and they can't please anyone without hurting someone else they care about. The ancient norms and rules are questioned and the discussions regarding duty and love are thought-provoking and interesting. The stakes are immense and the air is full of tension.

It is ok...
Makourk6 September 2022
Well, you are definitely not getting bored watching this episode, that is for sure.. Costumes are just fine, actors playing just fine, CGI is - just fine, but we are missing the "wow" factor here. We are missing intrigue and strong plot up to now, also struggling to get attached to any character. However, I can understand we all tend to compare this series with GoT and rightfully so, being directly related to the events that unfolded in GoT. I think we don't do ourselves any favor here. GoT had a vast area to play with characters, houses, plots, intrigue, fights etc yet here we focus in one House only. For the series to make you appreciate the story in the same way GoT did is -by default- more challenging. Yet, we have a good flow up to now, I am looking forward to appreciate HoD for what is supposed to be and not for pretending to be GoT II.

Can't wait for the next episode
joealbanese-536586 September 2022
When I find myself looking forward to the next episode I know that the show has succeeded in capturing my interest. There is no question HotD has done that. Those that are comparing it to GOT after 3 episodes are just ridiculous. Let's wait for an entire season and then we can make comparisons but so far so good. They are developing the characters, the writing is intelligent and the production values are off the charts.

Oh and pro tip, if you see any interview with the word "woke" in it, don't even bother reading because it is more than likely written by some little fragile little thing that just can't handle diversity in any form as it apparently threatens their world view. It is sooooo tiresome.

Phenomenal TV
ArnabHaldar4215 September 2022
Normally don't review individual episode. But this one deserves individual praise. Paddy Considine's portrayal of Viserys Targaryen is probably better than how GRRM wrote him. The musics, specially in the end was on point. It elevated the visuals rather than being a distraction. Rhys Ifans and Matt Smith brought their a game. Even Milly Alcock (as Rhaenyra), whose acting I found a bit wooden in previous two episodes, improved her overall performance. Gave 9/10 instead of a perfect score coz. The Dragon CGI needs a little bit of work. Otherwise this was a flawless 1 hr entertainment.

Now I really feel bad for the billion dollar dumpster fire that is the Rings of Power, whose review is still locked on IMDb.

Another great episode.
jacobnoble-025245 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
In my opinion this is the best episode so far. Paddy's acting is great in this episode, and the rest of the cast do their job well. It builds the story well. I do feel it could be a slowed down. Whilst I have enjoyed the pacing on the most part, I feel we could have had some more time exploring some of the other characters more such as the crab feeder, Rheanyrs and Laenor. But since it is only episode 3 we I'm sure we will get time to see more of the latter 2. Intrigued where it will go from here.

The battle at the end added another level to the episode. Was pretty brutal. It was quite short however, and a 1v1 with Daemon and the crab feeder would've been good to see. I think we are just used to huge scale battles in westeros that smaller scale ones like this seem underwhelming. But it was still good, and again only 3 episodes in.

One thing I think could improve is the music. The GOT Targaryen music was epic and moving. We are missing that in HotD. CGI is good on the most part.

Overall a great episode.

People are forgetting a few things
briansbread6 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
"Is Matt Smith good or bad" - there is no such thing as "good" or "bad" people in the GOT world. I guess you'll have to wait and see.

If people are expecting a Jon Snow type character in this series, they won't get one. GRRM and the showrunners clearly stated more than once that in this show there won't be white or black characters - only grey. Nobody is good or bad. They all have good and bad qualities.

For those who are lost - this story covers The Dance Of Dragons from GRRM's F&B - the main event starts around the year 130 (in the books). Currently, in episode 3, the events are taking place in around 114. Throughout this first season there will be several time skips, one of which is a ten year time skip. The main event starts right at the end of the season and will be covered in the second season, during which there won't be any time skips anymore since the event lasts only around 2 years in the books. Either they'll choose to do it in 2 seasons or they'll extend it to 3 seasons - so the show will have 3-4 seasons at most. The first season is only setting up the story and the characters - kinda like how in GOT it took like 4 seasons for the story to really pick up.

Also - haven't you people seen the trailers?

Everything was great until the beach fight scene
dakuchonekobing7 September 2022
Actually, the director of this episode doesn't seem to be very good at directing battle scenes on the battlefield. They should let Miguel Sapochnik direct the fight scenes in this episode. Personally, the battle scene at the end of this episode didn't convince me. Just all the blood and killing each other, so disturbing and uncomfortable, instead of giving the viewer a sense of drama and fear when the characters rushed into battle. When I saw Daemon hurling himself at the pirates and getting a rain of arrows, I was pretty sure he would survive, so what's the point of that scene? Even the fact that the crabfeeder was killed so easily and without saying a single word, this unsurprised me no more than a Velaryon riding a dragon and shouting "Dracarys!". Wow what a not-so-interesting scene. I was waiting for the climax at the end, and I was disappointed. Actually the detail at the end could develop the Daemon character, but the beach fight scene is really boring. GOT has a lot of interesting battles, but this is not one of them.

Speaking of what happened before that battle, wow I must say I'm so satisfied. King Viserys is so well developed and as a viewer and know many interesting GOT characters, I'm starting to get interested in this squishy and soft king. The emotions and thoughts that Viserys has experienced and felt in more than 10 years of being King, I can personally understand through just over half an hour in this episode. And including the relationship between father and daughter, the disagreement between generations, I believe this episode has messages for real-life families, in today's modern generation as well. And once again I would like to commend the team of costumes, setting design, so beautiful, so dreamy. Through this episode we also get to know many new characters, and hopefully they will join this game in a larger role.

So many "are you kidding me" moments!
tbyrd-500885 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I do not have an issue with the slow pace of this episode as some have mentioned. I understand it must be done to set up the characters and their backstories. I have an issue with the ending. Seriously, they are fighting the crab king for two years, can't make head way, then Daemon receives a letter from his brother that help is on the way, and he turns into a demigod seconds after reading it. I get that he walks into the enemy's camp because he's rather die than his brother get the glory. But, seriously, the man literally dodges 300 arrows and takes on 30 of the most feared men in the kingdom, alone. I found the last 10 minutes absurd, while others are praising the fight scenes.

The drama going on with the king could have been shortened and used that time to build up the ending. As it stands, what could have been a powerful portrayal of a cunning figure turned into a WTH moment.

Better than the first two!
and_mikkelsen5 September 2022
This episode was a step up from the first two episodes as the conflict is grooming, and the characters are strugling! The relationship between viserys and Rheanyra is the most IMPORTANT aspect and will play a vital role in how the story will unfold!

This episode gave som clearity as to where this is going, more so than the previous two! The battle was also well done! It was not crazy or mindblowing like the great battles from GOT, but very suitable as this was only the third episode! Nice choeography and long-takes!

This show just keeps showing potential and is one of the best shows currently airing!

Great episode
BadurBey5 September 2022

Solid third episode. Started kinda slow but ended really strong. King Viserys Targaryen is slowly becoming my favorite character in this show. His development in this episode was S tier. Rhaenyra's arc this episode was also beautiful. The imagery with Rhaenyra being the one to find the white stag was great. And to top it all off, we end off the episode with a great battle.

The War for the Stepstones is great. Daemon and the Velaryons are struggling to subdue Prince Dahar the Crabfeeder for over three years. But with one letter from his brother, Daemon commits war crimes to get victory over his enemy. Great episode overall. Definitely better than episode 2 but still isn't as great as episode 1.

Wow- GOT all over again
manshedmark6 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The episode commences by announcing that a new possible heir to the throne has been born, Aegon Targaryen, the first born son the king. Rhaenyra, who has previously been named the heir of the throne, is now being compelled to marry off as a trophy meant to further increase the strenght and influence of house Targaryen, as she has now come of age. Rhaenyra herself expresses anger throughout the episode as she is not content with her current position in which she for one might lose her position as the heir to the throne and two might be married to some lord. Although the king knows that his daughter must marry as per her duty as the princess he is torn on the decision whether or not to, due to him not desiring any further pain and suffering for his daughter who has already lost her mother, for whose death he still mourns and at least partly blames himself for.

The episode then changes from the political to the gruesome and portraits some very action packed scenes during the last ten minutes. The war that the king's brother leads (Daemon), which the king denies as a war, has sustained great losses for the Targaryen side and the king decides to send supporting troops and ships as per plead by Veamond Velaryan. Daemon is outraged after learning of this and decides to take matters into his own hands. He lures the enemy into the open by waving the flag, suggesting defeat, after which their remaining troops and dragon attack finally resulting in victory.

The acting, cinematography, dialogue and all over vibe is very convincing and GOT-like. I am happily surprised by this prequel thus far and can only hope that it continues in this direction.

Amazing!
venneanders5 September 2022
GOT is finally back from the dead. The pacing is magnificent in This ep. The Deamon character is beautifully written. Dragons look absolutely amazing. Deamons dragon is quite literally the best CGI I have seen in a while. The cgi lacks in other areas tho, especially with the deers

Millie Alcock plays the role, with such great intensity. Wish to see more of her an Alice background in some flashbacks or something. How or when the relationship worsened.

Wish to see more of the Crabfeeders lineage, such a mystery to me if he is some sort of a Targaryen or something.

Can't wait for the next instalment.

Brilliant writing
Xiphoner5 September 2022
Masterfully written & directed episode, accompanied by multiple standout character performances, and a truly haunting soundtrack.

So reminiscent of early-mid GoT in terms of quality, pace, and writing, that it's actually scary. Everything was on point. The tempo didn't feel too rushed nor too slow, the story was seamlessly immersive and real, despite being set in a fantasy world where dragon sightings are an everyday occurence. Only complaint would be that, at times, it felt like tiny bits of the plot were missing ever so slightly. Some things that happened off-camera might've been decent additions to the already great episode, but that's really nitpicking.

All in all, a great display of screenwriting & execution.

Warning: Spoilers
Im totally invested and like the story so far. I knew there gonna be timejumps in the 1st season and i was worried but i think the writers are doing a good job. In this partically episode i think Viserys and exp Daemon steal this episode and carry it. And i liked it a lot when the last 1/3 of the episode with Daemon he didnt have any single line. And theres sooooo much little eastereggs and details here and there. Example in the first scene when Daemon is getting hitted with firing arrows also CAraxes is feeling the damage. Liked it alot and shows how connected the dragons are with their riders. Interested to see how much of those types of things are happening in the future episodes/seasons. Suddle 8/10 from me like pretty much the previous episodes too. Im just confidence theres going to be 9/10 and 10/10 scores coming up in the future.

A flawed, yet outstanding, episode
tancrevena6 September 2022
Second of His Name is a very good third episode, yet a bit flawed. The pacing is once again on point, in one hour it shows different locations and events, slowing down on the in-depth analysis of some characters but never getting boring. The soundtrack, with the new tracks, is fitting for the themes of the characters and the costumes, scenography and locations are as masterful as they should be. The time skip is well managed and doesn't leave the spectator questioning about the new setting, this skip also forges new personalities in the character we had already known: Otto is more determined than ever; Viserys has once again found joy in his new son; Rhaenyra is a rebel who needs a new husband, although she doesn't want it, and is now in conflict with Alicent, despite the latter still tries to reconcile with her; Criston Cole has already become a favourite of the princess and Daemon must show his value. The conflict father-daughter between Viserys and Rhaenyra is stronger than ever and emotional on some points. The hunting in the Kingswood and the camp are also some devices to show new families of the Seven Kinkgdoms, such as the Lannisters and Redwynes. Then we also get to know new characters such as Vaemond and Laenor Velaryon and the whole plot climaxes in an outstanding and unpredictable ending, able to break the previous schemes of Game of Thrones. The episode is focused on the politics and intrigues, in order to set up the future conflicts and the ambiences show the common life of the hypocrite nobles of Westeros; yet some action-packed sequences are shown and are able to balance the rhythm. Furthermore, Second of His Name, is rich with symbolism, as there are many hints at symbolic values and future happenings in the series.

On the downsides in this episode, I found some flaws in the dialogue and structure: the former is a bit repetitive and, after some time, becomes slightly annoying; in this third part of the first season, we have a recurring structure: if the first episode was focused on the King's succession, the second on the new wife, the third one evolves around the duty of Rhaenyra's new husband, thus leading to a repetitive dialogue on this matter. At the fourth or fifth time that we hear about her rebellious attitude, her will against the king or the fact that she needs a new husband, the dialogues seem heavy. Furthermore, the CGI of the dragons seems improved, however the animals are a bit clunky in movements and emerge as not so real. However, except these two flaws and a bit of plot armour in the end, the episode is perfect: if the problem of the dialogues gets figured out in the following episodes, we might reach a level of perfection.

Wars and Politics
tristan_195 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik step into the world of Game of Thrones with absolute confidence. Every aspect of House of the Dragon, every storyline is meticulously planned and executed.

From the get go, you feel the strong grip. In this episode, we get to see both the beginning and the end of the war in the Stepstones and it feels organic nonetheless.

Gabe Fonseca and Condal write such a magnificent time skip, where every bit of emotion is felt and nothing seems out of hand or hard to understand. We continue with Rhaenyra's state of mind, as Aegon is born. She feels estranged from Alicent and Viserys, who pushes hard for her to marry.

Paddy Considine delivers his best performance yet, and the rest of the cast also excels. The dynamic is really deep and you feel sad for Rhaenyra, who just wanted a good relationship with her father. But politics have other plans of course.

On a technical level, there's nothing to fault. The dragons still shine, and the battle choreographies are more than solid. The shots and camera movements carry the required emotions and informations.

Overall, a deep dive into the princess and the king's psyches and a stunningly designed war make ¨Second of His Name¨ an episode to be remembered.

Still a guilty pleasure but...
meelkliko10 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
... a few things in this episode were really poor.

There was this Rambo Style, totaly unbelievable battle with the Crabfeeders army, who like Stallone's enemies can't aim, dont know how to attack in unison, but line up to be slashed or stabbed down one by one. Like in a cheap kung-fu movie. Otherwise a great battle scene when the rest of the men enagaged eachother, but I was almost waiting for Daemon to jump into a miraculously appearing phonebooth, reveal himself as Superman putting his red cape on and fly with the dragons. You can be kick-*ss without becoming incredible but to top it all, he enters the caves and next thing we see is him dragging the crabfeeder's corpse (well part of it) out, no battle, no confrontation, just blackness and hurray... battle over Superman (without cape) won, the evil enemy ran out of kryptonite and is defeated, we just never got to see how.

Now what would have been Bad-*ss did not happen, in fact it was a sad, pathetic and (even though its not real) tasteless and shocking scene of the mighty king killing a helpless strapped[down scared stag and not even flawless but needing a second strike. WHY is this expilicitkly filmed and not the fight with the Crabfeeder, and In my opinion, letting the stag go whould have shown real kick-*ss-ness. "OK guys great job scaring the thing senseless and capturing it, but now let it go, chop chop, time for tea." Now that be a strong and majestic action... Anyway I hope the next episode will be less flawed.

After years of protracted battle...
svrxmpzbz5 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The crab king decides it's a good move to send his entire army out to kill one guy who has already been shot by two arrows.

One guy. Already injured.

This is the kind of lazy writing that ruins the integrity of the whole show.

These first three episodes have been relatively boring, but I was willing to chalk them up to scene setting. That is, until the writers decided to make the crab king-who has been holding off armies and dragons for YEARS-to send his whole force onto the beach after one INJURED guy. Now I know those three boring episodes can't be building up to anything good, because the writers obviously aren't trying.

It reminds me of GOT Season 7, when it was obvious they handed the pen off to the wrong people.

3/10.

Show keeps getting better and better!
kc-440778 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Love this episode! My favorite so far. Love the opening with Daemon and Caraxes, The Hunt, and final battle was incredible! To people saying Daemon having "plot armor" are being a little absurd. There were men shooting arrows from a cliff through fog as Daemon is sprinting and hiding behind debris. He gets shot three times and survived a suicidal mission. It's no different to Tom Hanks surviving the D-Day invasion in Saving Private Ryan or in reality when actual soldiers rushed the beaches of Normandy, not every man on the front line was killed. Some men just get lucky and are at the right place at the right time and it's totally ok to portray this in art. Not every scene like that has to be labeled "plot armor bad."

The soundtrack for this entire series has been phenomenal so far and I still can't get the image of Daemon covered in blood out of my head. Looking forward to episode 4!

This series is good but....
calebamorgan5 September 2022
It's so frustrating to watch, the King is so STUPID. Otto Hightower is such a annoying and obvious snake, it's just mind boggling how dumb the King is omg he falls for literally everything. The king could probably be manipulated to believe the sky is orange.

I'm loving the buildup to everything and all the characters being introduced and established. The action scenes have been well made so far and it's always exciting seeing dragons and especially how distinctly different they are in this series.

I'm so excited for the coming weeks! It's only going to get better and better and I'm looking forward to the big timejump even though I've grown attached to young Rhaenyra.
