- Sovereign Uriel is furious at Vox Machina for ruining his diplomatic dinner by fighting the Briarwoods. He orders his guards to have them locked up, but Lady Allura Vysoren convinces Uriel to let her handle their punishment. The party try to defend themselves and explain what really happened, and warn Allura that Uriel is under the Briarwoods' influence. Allura cannot exonerate them without proof, but admits that the Sovereign is acting harshly. She puts them under house arrest at their keep until an official inquiry can be made. Sylas and Delilah Briarwood are racing away from Emon when Delilah realizes that Vax stole her dark tome. Sylas assures her that they can retrieve it before the party figure out its purpose.
Vox Machina have their weapons, including Scanlan's lute, confiscated by the soldiers guarding them at their keep. Captain Jarett warns them any escape attempts will be met with severe punishment, and the party are confined inside. That night that party try and figure out what to do next. Luckily, Vax does not appear to have contracted vampirism from his tangle with Lord Briarwood, but Pike seems to be lost in thought and on edge since the fight. Scanlan tries to translate the ancient script in the Briarwoods' book. Vex demands that Percy give them answers, especially after what he did to the carriage driver. Percy passes it off as him just going overboard, and tells them that the Briarwoods once came to Whitestone as friends of the de Rolos. Once they got close enough, they and their minions staged a coup, killing most of the family in cold blood. Percy and his sister Cassandra were taken prisoner and tortured for weeks before attempting to escape, but she was shot down as Percy fled. He warns the group that now that the Briarwoods know Percy is alive, they will try to finish what they started. His friends agree to help. The Briarwoods arrive at a century, and Delilah uses necromancy to raise the dead.
Percy finds a secret passageway under the keep. Vex asks Pike to cast Light so they can find their way, but Pike instead asks Keyleth, who doesn't have the hang of the spell yet. Nevertheless, they make it to the outside exit, but are met by Jarett and his guards. Jarett separates them so they won't conspire with eachother, Percy and Keyleth in Percy's workshop, Grog and Pike in the sanctuary, and Vex, Vax, and Scanlon in the kitchen. Vex briefly considers that she and Vax could easily escape by themselves, but they are not willing to abandon their companions. Outside, mysterious and silent figures begin creeping their way toward the castle. Pike tries to pray to her deity to no avail. Grog finds her broken symbol of the Everlight, and Pike confides in him that ever since she got hit with Delilah's curse, she cannot seem to get through. The goliath and tries to encourage his best friend. Keyleth tries to get Percy to open up while he tinkers. She remarks that none of them seem to ever share details about their pasts to eachother. To try and change this, she tells him that she hasn't seen her family in a long time, as she is currently on a long quest to prove herself by completing an Ashari tradition, the Aramente, before she is allowed to return home. She admits that she has grave doubts about ever being worthy. She tries assure Percy that he doesn't have to be alone in his struggles. They hear commotion coming from outside as Jarett's guards begin to be killed off in the darkness. Sensing danger, Grog breaks everyone out of their rooms. Jarett and his few remaining men retreat inside, as the lights in the keep are extinguished and the enemies are revealed; horrific, undead specters. The wraiths slaughter the last of Jarett's guards, then go after Scanlan as Vex realizes they are there for the dark tome. Vox Machina are able to keep the book away from the specters, but Vex and Scanlan suffer necrotic injuries as the party and Jarett fall back to the last chamber in the keep with any light. They do not have long to recover however, and the ghostly fiends phase through the walls and drench them in darkness. The party's attacks have no effect on the specters, who easily overwhelm their members one by one until Jarett lights a torch, which momentarily wards them off. Pike tries to summon radiant light but is still cut off, leaving Keyleth as their only hope. At the last second, the druid manages to create sunlight in her hands that scares the wraiths and turns them corporeal long enough for her friends to kill them once again. Vox Machina tell Jarett the Briarwoods will continue sending monsters after them and must be stopped. Jarett decides to let them go so they can avenge his fallen men.
The next morning, Percy tries to leave alone for Whitestone. Grog, Keyleth, Scanlon, Vex and Vax all appear and tell him they are going with him to end the Briarwoods and clear their names. Percy accepts their help, and promises not to keep anymore secrets from the group. Vex leaves Trinket behind for his safety, and as they head out Pike tells them she is not going with them. Until she has made amends with the Everlight, she cannot help them, and tells them she is going to find a temple. Grog wants to go with her, but she convinces him to stay and help their friends. She tells Keyleth that she is the party's "light" now, and the rest of the party leaves to get supplies for their journey as Pike goes her own way.
