A genius ending to a genius show
dfloro23 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I'm going to be covering more than just one episode in this review, so bear with me. The first season of "Goliath" had set such an impossibly high bar, a lot of us who were following it felt a bit let down by the 2nd and, to a lesser extent, 3rd seasons. And now, after a typically maddening delay from the pandemic, we have the 4th & final season of the Amazon Studios show, & it's revelatory!

Over the same October time period that I was watching "Goliath," I also began watching a series on another streaming platform called "Dopesick," based on the non-fiction book of the same name. And both of these "limited series" tackle the same subject matter: the epidemic of opioid use and misuse in the U. S. And as good as the Hulu series (q.v.) and its great cast has been (I am writing this *before* the last few weekly episodes have even been released), the fictional "Goliath" and its cast is even better.

Of course, Billy Bob Thornton reprises his leading role as Billy McBride, and he continues to get himself in more legal hot water, as any attorney concerned truly with morality and justice would. In his personal life, he's also struggling to re-establish ties with his daughter.

If there's been one constant throughout the 5 year-long run of "Goliath," it has been the excellence of Nina Arianda's creation of, and performance as, the unique character, Patty Solis-Papagian. And as the unwillingly manipulated and frequently enraged real estate agent turned high-powered attorney, she is totally believeable and very compelling. And her grin at the verdict in the Zax Pharma trial seems perfectly genuine.

Tania Raymonde plays Brittany Gold, a sex worker turned private investigator assisting Billy with his cases (and once in a while, his daughter). She's very good at making the mostly thankless "hooker with the heart of "gold" role much more than it could've or should've been.

We see William Hurt again in season 4, playing Billy's old founding law partner, Donald Cooperman, mostly in dreams and flashbacks. He is, of course, great.

And for this season, we add the all stars: J. K. Simmons as George Zax, of "ZaxLax" fame & billionaire co-founder of Zax Pharma with his older chemist brother, Frank, played by the one and only Bruce Dern, perfectly cast as a man struggling his entire life both to remain true to his family (especially his chemist daughter, Kate, well played by Clara Wong) and also to remain ethical in his business. It gradually becomes clear the mental/emotional price he's paid for it.

Elias Koteas, a great, very underrated actor, plays grieving father of an opioid victim and whistle-blower Tom True, a co-founder of the law firm Margolis-True with the father of Sam(antha) True, played ably by Jena Malone, who is a bit desperate to save her family's business (and to deal with her Multiple Sclerosis).

All this makes it sound like there's TOO much going on, but over the course of the 8 hour-long episodes, with the use of the aforementioned flashbacks and dream-like sequences, all is revealed. And the satisfying (but not at all sappy) ending shot suggests that Billy and his own daughter may yet reconcile.

I will miss "Goliath," but it's writers, directors (including Lawrence Trilling) & producers (including David E. Kelley) know how to go out on top.

Wish it would continue

I like shows that have an imperfect lead character and Billy sure fills that bill. Smart, but self loathing in some ways, but loyalty tops everything. Interesting stories with lots of twists, a really good watch.

It's Time

Warning: Spoilers
The finale was really strong here. Billy got a big win, a fitting end to the series, but the flashbacks/dreams/visions never made sense and we didn't even get a clear answer as to what they were.

If they just left it to the courtroom stuff the episode would be much better.

Brilliant just Brilliant. Gutted it's finished. Best series and most similar to series 1.

Like a good book, couldn't put it down. Watched in a day in between a camping trip.

There are 2 camps generally today, 1 where you think big pharma is good and will take anything they offer and one where you think they are blood sucking money making vultures.

A quick bit of research confirms this series themes are more non fiction than fiction..

I waited...
songod-9500331 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I waited till the end to say anything.

First I will say that show runners around the industry ought to watch how these runners satisfactorily ended their series; as well as previous seasons. Also pay attention to Mike Flanagan ("Midnight Mass", "Hill House") who also knows how to end things properly (tho I disagree with his take on "Hill House" having a happy ending).

Secondly, it is good this is the last season as clearly the production has run its cycle. McBride now ought to semi-retire (remember he has lots of money he never uses), maybe to come back after getting reinstated to defend Sam against any legal fallout tossed at her by Zax. Tho I think Zax is going to have bigger troubles when Bob files murder charges!

But the show is done. The reliance on dream sequences throughout told me the writers did not have enough story to fill the season. And also what would they have done next? Taken on a Bill Gates type of character??

Over all, one of the best American series of the 2000's.

Great

Would have loved to see some characters get charged with murder. I can see from many of the glib comments that this true pandemic hasn't touched your life yet.

They made a come back
rachel-193-12027429 April 2023
This season is a great come back from the delusional 3rd season. Taking on big pharma was a good move. It was a subject everyone could get behind and really root for the win. 3rd season we rooted for the win because of a really cruel defendant. This season the defendant is cruel but the product is to be defeated as well. The acting this season was top notch with a top notch script. I am sorry to see the series end, but glad they were able to end the series with a truly winning season. Thanks for the great come back. This season was engaging and essential to watch. Well done, well done. Don't miss the finale.

Missing the Point
Hitchcoc24 November 2021
Yes, the pharmaceutical company have done wonder to address health problems and diseases. Yes, they have been at the forefront in the Corona Virus treatments. This show is about a person who leads a company, who knows a product is deadly and destructive, and continues to produce and promote it. Opioids have been a scourge on our world for some time and there are heavily documented cases of abuse in the medical community. The "sheep" one of you mentions are those who trusted doctors and pharma companies and ended up with lives ruined or their children dead.

Actually liked the final season!
mwen001-24 November 2021
Is it pretentious and self-indulgent! Hell yeah but it's well written and well acted. Great camera work and production design. Smart dialogues and characters I will miss. When it got too boring I just checked my emails but overall very entertaining and a good ending. Will miss the show!

Great start, so-so finish
djp19978 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Strange dream sequences continuing from season 3, inexplicable that "Big Pharma" has only 1 attorney to represent 3 companies, bizarre that the state of California would hire some tiny law firm to litigate what would be more likely to be a private class-action suit, phantom lady popping in and out for no reason and obligatory family estrangement are the hallmarks of the last season set in Chinatown? Nothing made much sense other than a scriptwriter's need for contrivances to push a surreal ambiance in this last season. Great cast that try to do their best with what they are given but it strains credibility and requires so much suspension of belief that this oddball season alternates between absurdity and relief it has ended. The first 2 seasons were stellar and then the next 2 almost feel like unused scripts from "Legion" were rehashed since there was no path forward. It's Time, indeed.

Implausible
pauljfagan7 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
So I realize that this is drama and not supposed to be totally authentic where a trial like this would have teams of lawyers and dozens of witnesses and would drag on for months, but what I found most implausible was how small "big Pharma" was. I think the company consisted of five people. The CEO had one trusted confidential assistant (Fern) and no other company officers or VPs to be seen. Anyway, I liked season 1 and 2 detested 3 and not a big fan of 4. The casting made it watchable but couldn't save it. I wouldn't rule out a revival based on the ending.

Trimadone... Tramodal...
TheFearmakers24 September 2021
The final season of Goliath has Billy taking on big pharm and it's the worst season ever, and is part of the reason the show will be both not missed and sorely missed. First, there won't be any more let-downs after the first two seasons and last, it's a shame what happened to this show. While Season 3 has dream sequences and weird stuff that carried onto this season, there aren't any interesting characters and the villain here, played by a great actor, is just plain dull. It really doesn't even feel like part of the same series. Billy is hardly risking anything and whether he's experiencing real life or suffering more insufferable hallucinations doesn't really matter because it's all pretty boring.

Irony: American "Big Pharma" will have saved several hundred million people from Covid by the time it is over
random-7077826 September 2021
Really this series has gone off the rails. US "Big Pharma" as evil? US big pharma has driven all the effective covid vaccines, at an amazing pace of quick development and production, and is also driving virtually all the effective antiviral treatments (google: MSNBC A daily pill to treat Covid could be just months away, scientists say).

I like Billy Bob Thorton and think he is a real talent, but season 4 of this show is for dullards and is pitching a worn out and bogus narrative.

I am sure this will get downvoted by sheep who are upset by facts.

I get it...the writiers are hooked on opiods
TK3213 March 2023
That's the only explanation for their inept political attempt to, as Billy whines in his completely implausible pulpit-preaching answer from the witness stand, "make sure there are no billionaires or big pharmaceutical companies left". Get a grip people, not ONCE did they discuss all the opiod crap flowing across our borders on a daily basis with their low-lifers standing on the street corners dishing it out -- no, they go after the companies who manufacture a product to help those in paid, prescribed by doctors who control who gets a prescription. Let's get all the illegal crap off the street before we decide that we need to ban pain relief for those who suffer; and oh it has to be because of a rich person. Hollywood just needs to go quietly die now so we can move on and find entertainment again.
