Martin Smith did not want to include testimonies from Russian emigres in this episode, since he thought that they would bring an anti-Soviet agenda to an interview. He sent monthly requests through the Soviet Embassy in London and the Russian news agency, Novosti, to travel with a film crew to Moscow to interview Red Army veterans, but did not initially receive any responses. As such, the original edit of this episode did not feature any interviews. However, sometime after its completion, Novosti informed Smith that it would be possible for him to travel to Moscow and interview Red Army veterans, as long as he agreed to work with a Soviet film crew. Consequently, the episode was re-edited to include the interviews that he recorded in Russia.
The song played during the montage of Soviet factories at work building tanks is "Do svidanya, goroda i khati" - "Goodbye, cities and towns".
