The legendary Jean-Claude Van Damme is back in action in the upcoming thriller Darkness of Man, which is set to receive a digital release on May 21st. With that date just a couple months away, a trailer for the film has arrived online, and you can check it out in the embed above!
Directed by James Cullen Bressack, who crafted the story with Jcvd and wrote the screenplay with Alethea Hnatko-Cho, Darkness of Man has the following synopsis: Russell Hatch (Jean-Claude Van Damme) is a washed-up, former Interpol operative who vowed to protect the son of an informant killed years earlier in a raid gone wrong. When merciless street gangs start an all-out turf war and the kid is caught in the middle, Hatch will stop at nothing to keep him safe and fight anyone who gets in his way.

Marco Brambilla's 1993 film "Demolition Man" has a pretty wild premise. In the near-future of 1996, a wildly destructive criminal named Simon Phoenix (Wesley Snipes) is at large and taking hostages in Los Angeles. The cop sent in to apprehend Pheonix is John Spartan (Sylvester Stallone), an officer so reckless that he's earned the nickname of Demolition Man. When Spartan finds and confronts Pheonix, he explodes the building they're in. They both escape, but an investigation reveals the bodies of the hostages in the rubble. Oops. Spartan didn't handle that operation very well.
As punishment, Spartan and Pheonix are both subjected to a new prison experiment. Instead of living in cells, prisoners are cryogenically frozen for decades and fed subliminal rehabilitation messages. Spartan is thawed in the year 2032, where the world is now overseen by a benevolent (seeming) right-wing cult leader who has whipped Los Angeles -- now San Angeles -- into shape.

When it first came out in 1992, Mortal Kombat was the talk of the town. Every kid and their mother knew about it. Literally. The sheer violence and gore featured in the once-arcade game, had mothers taking to news outlets and politicians to get the game banned. Quite reminiscent of Kyle’s mom from South Park, one could say. Despite major censorship calls and aiding the birth of the Esrb, Mortal Kombat flourished, thanks in part to the controversies surrounding it.
Infamy of its gore aside, the game quickly became popular amongst players for its array of characters. The base roster still lives on in the modern iterations of the fighting game. Whether Liu Kang was your go-to or Thunder God Raiden, or perhaps Scorpion, everyone had their favorite pick. But amongst the ninjas and Gods alike, one character stood out that didn’t quite fit this bill… And that was Johnny Cage.

The Fast and Furious franchise has featured some pretty big stars since the early days of the street racing crew stealing TV/Vcr combos. Check out the later entries and you’ll see Kurt Russell, Charlize Theron, Helen Mirren, and plenty of others. But one action favorite who won’t be getting behind the wheel is Jean-Claude Van Damme, who claims that he hit a big, bad, bald roadblock when approached about joining the Fast and Furious franchise.
In a profile by The Telegraph, Jean-Claude Van Damme claimed that he could have once been a part of the insanity of this series if for Vin Diesel, who plays Dominic Toretto in the Fast and Furious franchise. “They want me in Fast and Furious… But Vin Diesel said, ‘No, I don’t want him.’” Shot down by the dude from Pitch Black and The Pacifier! It can’t be denied that as far as martial arts movies go, the best ones come from Asia, particularly Hong Kong during their action heyday, which was arguably the 70s, 80s and first half of the ’90s. That said, martial arts movies were also making a foothold in the States at the time, thanks mainly to Bruce Lee-mania following the release of Enter the Dragon. Before that movie, very few actors in Hollywood seemed like they were credible martial artists, except maybe James Coburn, a student of Lee’s, who pulled off some pretty good-looking moves in the otherwise silly Our Man Flint movies. Steve McQueen also had training but didn’t use martial arts on screen.
Up to then, though, the most notable uses of martial arts in movies usually revolved around Judo, with James Cagney showing off some good moves in the film Blood on the Sun,...

1990 was a peak year for Van Damage. The Muscles from Brussels was on the way to the big time after Bloodsport and Kickboxer (which made our list of the Best Fighting Movies) proved to be huge moneymakers at the box office. But, Jean-Claude Van Damme was different from some of his contemporaries because he was a hearthrob and a prime butt-kicker. His 1990 movie Lionheart was bought for distribution by Universal, paving the way to his breaking into mainstream studio work. But, before he could jump on that gravy train, he had one more movie left to make on his Cannon movie deal – but ironically, the company itself would not release the film theatrically due to its waning fortunes, with this being Van Damme’s first major studio release after MGM opted to distribute it. The movie? Death Warrant!

By all accounts, Ed Boon is just a regular guy. Chicago-raised, he loves shlocky Eighties action flicks and the music of Prince. Like everyone else, he’s racing to catch up on Succession but it’s tough to fit into his busy work schedule. His work just happens to be leading development for the latest installment of Mortal Kombat, one of the most influential game series of all time – not just for its impact on gaming, but for its three decades worth of symbiosis with our culture.

Mortal Kombat is a prolific fighting franchise. Despite the upcoming game’s Mortal Kombat 1 title, it is actually the twelfth mainline game in the series, and that number doesn’t account for the various spinoffs and countless upgrades. Then you have all the comics, movies, TV shows, web shows, techno albums, and other stuff that grew out of the series. From Liu Kang fighting a stop-motion Goro in a dingy dungeon to seeing him reinvent the entire universe, Mortal Kombat has seen some stellar highs and embarrassing lows.
What I’m saying is, Mortal Kombat is…a lot. So, as we prepare for Liu Kang and Shang Tsung’s war over the rebooted Earthrealm, let’s talk about some lesser-known parts of the franchise that you might not know about.

The early nineties were arguably the heyday of brawny action. Arnold Schwarzenegger was the world’s biggest star, thanks to Total Recall and Terminator 2. Sylvester Stallone was just a little behind him with Cliffhanger and Demolition Man, but the lower-tier action stars were starting to catch up. Steven Seagal had a string of hits and was briefly about to hit the big time with Under Siege. At the same time, the Muscles from Brussels was finding his way into bigger studio fare and teamed up with arguably the greatest action director of all time for one of his best movies – Hard Target, which is celebrating the 30th anniversary of its release.
Jump back to 1991, when Jean-Claude Van Damme had two movies that broke through at the North American box office. First up, in January of that year, was Lionheart, which carried a low budget but made $22 million for Universal.

It has been three decades in the making, but Jean-Claude Van Damme will finally be appearing in the Mortal Kombat franchise, as series staple Johnny Cage will get a skin based on the Muscles from Brussels.
As per the official Mortal Kombat 1 website, the game’s Kombat Pack expansion will feature “a Johnny Cage character skin with the likeness of famed actor and martial artist, Jean-Claude Van Damme (available at launch).” And yes, pre-orders are now live for those who want to experience Jcvd do a split and punch Shang Tsung in the groin.

I’ll always have a soft spot for the horror of the late ’90s. It wasn’t the best of the decade, but it does contain that silly and ambitious mix of dark edginess and psychological tension. Coming somewhat from the boom of the ’90s type of thriller, the religious horror resurgence came out of changing tastes. And though it didn’t all work out, there was a style and tone that I’ll always love. So what happens when an action superstar tries to grow while the genre around him changes into a different beast? You get the ridiculous but damn fun End of Days (watch it Here) on this episode of The Black Sheep.

18 What’s My Name? will be Jean Claude Van Damme’s final movie. It’s hard to believe at this time, but that appears to be the word given. The Muscles from Brussels has been acting since the 1980s and creating one character after another. Many people grew up watching Jcvd and saw the guy reinvent himself a few times. One thing that’s easy to state is that he’s been able to avoid taking himself too seriously. Van Damme has starred in more than a few straight-to-dvd releases. He’s also injected enough comedy into his act to be fairly amusing. It’s also

Action films of all types and budgets are coming out left and right. With all the streaming services, direct-to-vod, and smaller theater runs, films that may not even have gotten greenlit at all years ago are making it to our eyeballs fairly easily. With so many titles coming, which ones should everyone look forward to? Here are five action films that are coming out relatively soon that we’re looking forward to.
Darkness of Man (2023)
The new Jean-Claude Van Damme flick just wrapped and should be coming out later this year. It’s being labelled as a neo-noir action thriller. The story follows an Interpol operative played by Jcvd who ends up entangled in a gang turf war when he takes an informant’s son under his wing. Of course, things go from bad to worse, and some Jcvd heroics are needed to save the day. The film comes courtesy...

Nicolas Cage plays a tongue-in-cheek version of himself in The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, a gleefully meta action comedy from co-writer / director Tom Gormican. Exclusive: In a hot package for EFM buyers this weekend, Jean-Claude Van Damme will star in What’s My Name? Directed by Jeremy Zag, the film will be produced by Cross Creek’s Tyler Thompson alongside Asko Akopyan, Zag and Van Damme. Executive Producer is John Soibatian. Cross Creek is fully financing a film that will reunite the fighting icon in matches against some of his past screen rivals.
Van Damme tells Deadline that What’s My Name? will dip into his cinematic and personal life — as did the 2008 film Jcvd — and that it will bring to an end his long career as an action film fighter. Oscar-winning Green Book scribe Nick Vallelonga and Paul Sloan (Stilleto) wrote the script, based on a story by Van Damme. Wild Bunch International is handling foreign sales, and CAA Media Finance is representing the film’s domestic distribution rights.
In the film, Van Damme will play himself.

The Last Mercenary definitely sounds like a Jean Claude Van Damme movie, since it’s essentially about a mercenary that’s been in the game for quite a while and now has to help his kid, who he’s spent little to no time with over the years, who’s being framed as an arms dealer and drug trafficker. That premise alone makes it a perfect Jcvd movie since it’s the kind of thing that would appeal to the fans he’s had for so long and it’s the type of conflict that he’s excelled at for decades now. Quite a few fans from the

"Life is one long op." Netflix has launched the first official trailer for a new French action film called The Last Mercenary, aka Le Dernier Mercenaire in French, from filmmaker David Charhon. This new Jcvd action comedy is dropping on Netflix right away at the end of July this summer. A mysterious former secret service known as "La Brume" (or "The Mist") agent must urgently return to France when his estranged son is falsely accused of arms and drug trafficking by the government, following a blunder by an overzealous bureaucrat and a mafia operation. Jean-Claude Van Damme stars as the father who must come back to France and save his son, along with Alban Ivanov, Assa Sylla, Samir Decazza, Patrick Timsit, Eric Judor, and Miou-Miou. Not sure why Jcvd is wearing so many goofy disguises in this, but it looks like some throwaway fun. The only thing that really makes...

When it comes to aging action stars, the once-mighty tend to fall very hard; in the case of Jean-Claude Van Damme, oh how the mighty have fallen. After 2008’s “Jcvd” was a hit on the 2008-2009 festival circuit for its sly metafictional take on the actor, it looked like Van Damme’s star wasn’t in total descent. Instead, the actor evolved into something else entirely in that film: an endearingly self-aware performance that transformed van Damme’s inherent limitations into strengths.

In Next Door, a famous actor living in the penthouse of a renovated Altbau in Berlin––complete with his own private elevator––has his life flipped upon confronting a seemingly unassuming neighbor at his local bar. The director is Daniel Brühl, probably the most recognizable German actor to emerge since the country’s reunification and even in villainous roles a generally endearing onscreen presence. Next Door is his first feature (Brühl gets credit as director and star) and swings for the fences in its attempts to address the idiosyncratic generational, geographical class divides of his adoptive city. It doesn’t quite come off.
Brühl was born in Barcelona (his mother is Catalan) and grew up in Cologne, the furthest West of Germany’s major cities. His breakout role came in Wolfgang Becker’s Good Bye Lenin!, a 2003 film by a West German director with romanticized notions of the East. The...

I’ve got a fun little tidbit of information for you regarding an Easter egg that has been pointed out and confirmed for Shane Black’s The Predator.
This Easter egg is a reference to the original Predator test costume that Jean-Claude Van Damme wore when he was training and doing screen tests for the film. It’s pretty crazy to think that at one point Jcvd almost actually played the Predator!
Anyway, the original Predator costume that Jcvd wore was very different than the costume that ended up on the big screen. The screen test costume was pretty silly looking. If you need a refresher, here’s a video for you to watch:

"The clock is ticking... Tick, tock." Saban Films + Sky Cinema have released the full-length, official trailer for an action movie titled Final Score, from British director Scott Mann. This reminds me a lot of the 90s action movie Sudden Death with Jcvd, also set in a stadium, and the filmmakers have admitted that was a major inspiration. This looks kind of awesome! The story here is a fairly stock one - Jcvd plays a bouncer in his fifties struggling to take care of his young daughter - but one instantly elevated by the presence of director Julien Leclerq who is an absolute top tier talent. Leclerq's films don't always travel widely outside of Europe - they are very, very French - but his body of work is absolutely quality. The last time anyone actually asked Van Damme to display some proper dramatic chops was in the tragi-comic Jcvd and...

One of the great action stars of our time, Jean-Claude Van Damme, "The Muscles from Brussels", has been having a renaissance of sorts over the last few years. After having largely disappeared from the limelight in the late '90s and early '00s, he burst back on the the scene with the anti-autobiographical meta-narrative film Jcvd (2008) in which he played a version of himself weary of the world of direct to video dreck. In the several years since he's still making those low budget actioners, but with renewed vigor after having realized, along with a legion of new fans, that there is a place in the future for Jean-Claude Van Damme. He's bounced back with critically successful turns in the reinvigorated Universal Soldier series as...

After a massive shootout, a mysterious stranger (Van Damme) arrives at a local hospital on the brink of death. Then, a foreign gang brazenly comes to the hospital to hunt him down. His nurse, the sole surviving witness to the follow-up shootout, must face an FBI interrogation that unlocks a plot of international intrigue and revenge.

It’s hard to imagine the indefatigable Jean-Claude Van Damme ever tapping out, but after wrapping his new Amazon series, Jean-Claude Van Johnson, the actor needed time to recharge after a surprisingly emotional experience on what, on the surface, seemed like a lighthearted action-comedy show.
“I truly believed in every one of those characters, and it destroyed me -- physically, mentality. It ripped me up,” Van Damme recalls to Et. “At the end of the show, I was very tired, like, ‘Aaaahhh.’”
Most action stars of the ‘90s traded on a grim stoicism, dispatching enemies and saving nations with little more than a grunt. But Van Damme was different, using a light touch and a charming personality to go along with his spinning jump kicks to become an international superstar, one equally at ease with kicking a mascot in the face in Sudden Death and swapping jokes with the Friends gang.

Jean-Claude Van Damme discusses how he learned not to take himself so seriously in the new Amazon series, 'Jean-Claude Van Johnson.' Graham Walzer/Redux
Jean-Claude Van Damme – the kickboxing King of the Splits, the street-fighting inspiration for the game Mortal Kombat, the fabled flexing "Muscles From Brussels" – can get seriously silly.

In 2017, there’s a show for everyone, and typically that’s a good thing. There’s so much demand for fresh content and so many content providers looking to stand out, fresh stories from distinct voices populate an ever-diversifying television landscape. In other words, this is a world that could easily have room for a show where Jean-Claude Van Damme plays Jean-Claude Van Damme, a movie star who’s also a highly trained international spy.
But for as nutty as “Jean-Claude Van Johnson” sounds, its execution feels too familiar to earn its spot. Though the story-building in the pilot is clever enough to provide ample opportunity for good old-fashioned fun, too many easy jokes and half-baked movie homages keep the six-episode first season from fulfilling its potential as the sharp meta successor to “Episodes,” “The Comedians,” or even Van Damme’s 2008 film, “Jcvd.”
For starters, “Jean-Claude Van Johnson” has nothing to say about the industry,...

In the new Amazon series Jean-Claude Van Johnson, action star Jean-Claude Van Damme attempts to relaunch his career by playing a fictionalised version of himself. In the show, Jean-Claude goes to Bulgaria to star in a movie which has been set-up to allow him to undertake covert missions for the agency as his alter-ego name Jean-Claude Van Johnson.

It’s amazing how much television has evolved the past few decades. With amazing scripts and original concepts, many successful film actors have happily found themselves on the small screen. One such name that I would have never expected to see on TV is action legend Jean-Claude Van Damme. Yet after his acclaimed feature Jcvd, it appears that he is heading in a slightly new direction with his career. And now, he is headlining the... Read More...

When historians look back at the cosmic coincidences that made up the annus miserablis that was 2017, they will likely skip over the fact Netflix released a movie named Bright and a German horror series titled Dark within mere days of one another. We, however, are happy to celebrate such a glorious irony right here and now. The streaming service is also dropping a pair of stand-up specials from heavyweight talents (and supposedly the new season of Black Mirror, which is scheduled for "late 2017" ... so, um, soon?). Meanwhile Amazon is keeping...

Believe it or not, 1987’s “Predator” could have been even more badass. Seriously, even with the already macho team-up of Arnold Schwarzenegger, Carl Weathers, Bill Duke, and Jesse Ventura, there actually was going to be one more person that would have made it even better – Jean-Claude Van Damme. That’s right, Jcvd was actually originally cast as the Predator.

If you’re anything like me and are a fan of film trivia, then you love to ponder and discuss what could have been throughout the annals of cinema. So, if you’re of that ilk, you’re well aware that in some parallel dimension none other than Jean-Claude Van Damme was cast as the Predator and gave Arnold Schwarzenegger a run for his stogie back in the 1980’s.
But, as fate would have it, we never saw this cut, something director John McTiernan recently touched on when speaking with Cinema Blend:
“We never shot anything with him. It was a complete screw up with his agent, trying to hustle him into a job and didn’t know what the movie was. It’s silly. It was really silly.”
It’s hard to entirely extrapolate the context of that, but it could be assumed that Jcvd’s agent thought something...

The hook here is simple, kids: Black Water is Jean Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren teaming up on a submarine and right there you already know whether you want to see this film. And, really, if you're one of those who - like me - cut your teeth on the action films of the late eighties this is pretty much a must. A CIA operative (Jean-Claude Van Damme) is imprisoned in a secret black site on board a nuclear submarine. With the help of a new ally (Lundgren) he must make his escape and clear his name before he disappears forever. Both Lundgren and Jcvd have been experiencing something of a late career renaissance in recent years with films that may not always be...

There was a time when you could count on action movies to have cheeky, playfully-on-the-nose titles. Jean-Claude Van Damme, in particular, was the king in this arena, with classics - yes, classics! - like Sudden Death (terrorists take over a hockey rink during the Stanley Cup finals), Double Impact (where Jcvd plays his own twin brother), and Timecop (about a time traveling police officer). But these days action movies have forgotten how to have fun with their titles. Everything is either a character's name (John Wick, Jack Reacher, Jason Bourne) or a generic noun (The Accountant, Criminal, The Gunman). But one actor is still keeping their self-aware action movie title game strong. We are of course talking about Liam Neeson. Sure, Taken 1-3 may be generic, but...
