What if The Great British Bake Off - But Murder?
'Comfort Food', the latest episode of Pushing Daisies (Series 2, Episode 8) might be the most ambitious storytelling presented by the show so far. The two main plotlines are of equal interest and the secondary developments are fascinating. Kristin Chenoweth (as Olive) and Anna Friel (as Chuck) get to show a wide range of their acting skills, with the former giving a comedic performance and the latter, a dramatic one. Olive has the best lines, while Chuck stubbornly drives the narrative forward.

Characters are introduced and discarded with admirable agility, and the story contains more than a single twist. If earlier episodes would often follow a template - due to his traumatic childhood experiences, Ned developed a questionable coping mechanism; his approach is challenged, yet he persists in his habits; then, a revelation takes place and Ned, eventually, welcomes the necessary change - with 'Comfort Food', that is not the case. There is, of course, a murder, but other developments in the show suggest that the boiled-to-crisp Colonel Likkin is the least of our troubles.

The body count remains fluctuating, the interiors and costumes are either ridiculously impressive or impressively ridiculous. There is a character named the Waffle Nazi and a fleeting instance of self-cannibalism (the two are not connected). 'Comfort Food' is a bizarre but delightful concoction that leaves the audience hanging - and, perhaps, also craving fried chicken.

Chuck lets her father stay alive
Tweekums2 March 2012
Warning: Spoilers
After opening up Chuck's father's coffin they agree that Ned will ask his questions for the first thirty seconds then he will let Chuck spend the rest of the minute alone with him; what they didn't agree was that Chuck would put her glove on her father's hand and let Ned touch that so he can play dead and be rescued later! Of course for Chuck's father to live somebody else must die and that person was Dwight Dixon who had at that moment been lining up a rifle on Chuck. Ned is away with Olive for most of the episode, competing in the 'Papen County Comfort Food Cook-Off'. Competition is fierce but nobody expected the favourite, Col. Likkin, to end up deep-fried in his own secret recipe batter! Ned learns that it was murder but can't let onto Olive just how he knows as she isn't in on his secret.

This episode had plenty of funny moments; I loved how the deep fried Col. Likkin enjoyed a bite of his battered self before Ned touched him for a second time; in poor taste perhaps but delicious! Guest star Beth Grant goes a great job as competitor Marianne Marie Beattle; she seems to specialise in such unpleasant characters. The story of Chuck's father is pretty interesting; no doubt there will be some consequences to Dwight Dixon's death later and the mystery of the watches remains to be explained; something to look forward to in later episodes no doubt.

Chuck breaks the rules...
planktonrules28 May 2011
Warning: Spoilers
The show begins with Ned and Chuck reviving Chuck's very dead father. This meant digging up his corpse of 20 years and asking him about that watch and why Dwight is so insanely intent on getting it. However, Chuck impulsively decides to keep her corpsey father alive and tricks Ned. Later, she realizes this isn't good as SOMEONE else had to die for him to live, but it turns out it's evil Dwight--so it's isn't all bad.

During the bulk of the episode, Olive and Ned are at a cooking contest. However, a participant dies and Ned revives Colonel Likkin long enough to realize he was murdered for this secret recipe. In a VERY nasty but funny bit, the Colonel begins tasting himself and appreciates what his chickens have always had to go through to make his chicken! Yuck...but funny. Can he solve this crime while remaining in the contest? Once Ned returns from the contest, he sees Charles Charles (Chuck's dad) and so ends this very strange episode.

Overall, a good episode, though it's a bit more gross than normal. I liked this and seeing Colonel Likkin chowing down on his now deep-fried arm was pretty amusing! Well worth seeing.
