Top Notch Tosh
AJ_Blanc14 December 2021
Macintosh is easily the most consistent character in this show. She doesn't have the constant drama that Jimmy deals with, and doesn't make silly mistakes like Sandy does every season. Tosh is at her best in this time around and I enjoyed every scene with her in it.

While overall it was a great season... much better than the last two IMHO (not saying they were bad!), my main criticism was the sub-plot with a character from season 4; it just fell flat for me because it makes Duncan out to be a complete sap, and that felt out of character. Also, and this may be accurate for Scottish law, but I highly doubt what went down with that would lead to an arrest. A suspension while an investigation ensues, sure absolutely, but not slapping on cuffs for dramatic effect.

Having said all that, I really wish the show would stop doing the season-long story arcs; it makes for too much filler and too many red herrings that forces the pacing to jump around unnaturally. Two, maybe three episodes to tell one story, that's fine, but not all six.

Such a well done series.

I am keeping this review short so that the potential for spoilers is minimized.

Shetland is one of those rare series that improves with time, even if you don't see how it could. Series 6 shows once again how tangled and intertwined our lives can become. Beyond that, it's a clear demonstration of how some choose their own destiny, if only by poor judgment, while others have their destiny more or less determined for them. I must admit that I am ultimately disappointed in the actions of some of my favorite characters while happy to see that others provide a glimmer of hope for the future of the clan.

Series 7 cannot get here fast enough!

Great story.

Took me a while till I finally started to see the light.

And go down the rabbit holes that were there

Well constructed.

Great series that satisfies when you get to the last episode.

Can't wait till the next series.

I knew it!

Warning: Spoilers
I knew right from the first episode this season that Alison was pregnant and then to reveal in the final ep that it will be written into the show is wonderful! The episode itself was well worth the watch but really, Duncan, how could he be so dumb?

Loved Season 6
marybbloom-4833815 April 2022
Shetland series is one of the best in the genre. Season 6 is much better than 5 and I am looking forward for 7. Jimmy is having a sad time because his mother passed and his father is down with dementia... there is a ray of hope for romance woth lovely Meg but it is really only a hint. For Tosh also there seem to be good things coming. Only Sandy is kind of left alone and we don't know much about his life. Duncan plays a great role in this series I loved season 6. Can't wait for Season 7😍💙

No more Donna Killick story lines please -

Warning: Spoilers
If we have to sit through another season with that character's shadow is hanging around - I won't watch. As a viewer - it just exhausting. Doesn't Perez have enough to deal with? His dad, Duncan being a short sighted nincompoop, etc. Let's let him just get back to work and have the whole thing blow over by next season.

I'm with the other reviewer about Donna....
e_fins17 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
There were a couple things I liked about season 6, mostly Tosh & Sandy's character development & subplots. Both their actors are amazing!!

Unfortunately, overall, I felt like the writers didn't know what to do with season 6, so they continued with a plot from season 4. The b-subplot falls extremely flat for me. I don't care about Donna, she was a *** murderer, she killed a teenage girl in cold blood, and we're supposed to feel bad for her cause she got cancer?! Well, you know what, karma's a *** and she didn't deserve the painless death she got. Lizzie's sister was right, Donna should've died a painful death. I don't blame Sandy one bit for releasing those photos - he was right that people needed to remember how horrifically Donna murdered Lizzie. I had 0% compassion for Donna. I'm sure someone will think I'm a terrible person for saying those things, but oh well.

I hated how they made Duncan's character a complete pushover & Donna's door mat. They made Duncan look completely stupid & that's not what his character is. All the attention that Jimmy's new boss pays to Donna's letter is exactly what Donna wanted. How can she take that letter seriously?! She's going off the word of a woman who killed a teenage girl in cold blood?! Donna lied to the police at every turn, but we're supposed to believe that Jimmy's boss now believes Donna?! Consider the source!! How can she not see how very "convenient" Donna's letter is??

The twist at the end with Jimmy's arrest really ruined the show, they turned it into a U. S. cop show. It's something that would happen on Law & Order or Chicago PD. The British dramas are so much better than that, that's why I originally loved Shetland. If they continue with the Donna drama, I don't know if I can keep watching.

Also - I didn't trust Donna's nurse at all. She kept turning up at just the right times. I thought more than once that she was somehow involved in the murders. That would have made for a much better twist!

The ending was ridiculous. Come on, guys. Do better.

Warning: Spoilers
Duncan turning himself in was dumb. The fiscal arresting Jimmy was beyond stupid. They had ZERO except the letter of a lying murderer who covered up her crime by putting someone else in jail for 20 years and that is dying. You have to be joking. Opening an investigation may be one thing, but even that is a stretch since there was no proof of any misdeeds. The nurse would say Duncan and Donna got along well, etc. Suddenly Duncan gets a weird conscience and Jimmy gets arrested.

The storyline this season was great. Convoluted and deep. The evidence to support all the guilt from everyone was super, super weak. Everyone confessed? No one got lawyers? All Niven and Bedford had to do was.... STFU. They had the hearsay of a dead woman and Logan saying "we were there". And?

Come on, writers, you have to do better.

Ugh
allisonjoys25 January 2023
This was my least favorite episode which ended up ruining the entire season. I rewatched earlier seasons just to remind me why I like the show.

The storyline with Duncan was unnecessary and the season cliffhanger was not needed. The main island mystery with the Donnie and Sandy, and the father side stories would have been plenty.

The way season 5 ended in contrast was funny and heartwarming which made me look forward to the return of the show. I am about to watch season 7 but I'm not excited.

Because I haven't hit the required characters I will add that I love when interesting local things are included. The cake stand/case next to the lake in the middle of nowhere was cute.
