The first major studio family film of summer 2024 opens at the box office this weekend, and it couldn’t boast more star power.
Writer-director John Krasinski’s If — headlining Ryan Reynolds and Cailey Fleming alongside an A-list voice cast — explores the world of discarded imaginary friends and what happens when a young girl and her neighbor try to reunite them with their previous human pals.
The live-action/CGI animated Paramount pic is tracking for a domestic debut in the $40 million range. Reviews so far are mixed, but good audience scores will arguably matter more in this case. Plus, there’s a pent-up demand for family product that all ages can go see.
Unless there is a total upset, If should top the box office and wrest the crown from Disney and 20th Century Studio’s male-fueled Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, which overperformed in North America with a $58.6 million opening last weekend,...

Heading into theatres, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes had huge shoes to fill, as the modern trilogy, which concluded seven years back, set the bar pretty high. Although this entry in the IP doesn’t continue the trend of stepping up with each new release, which is reasonable considering how great the last one was, it’s still a worthy continuation of the franchise.
While not physically present in the film, Wes Ball did an impeccable job of capturing Caesar’s spirit and his influence, and the director didn’t drop the ball with the franchise’s new protagonist, Noa. Although the director confirmed that both Noa and Caesar are connected, it’s not the way that many would’ve assumed.

People often criticize Hollywood for their reliance on IP, and this weekend, director John Krasinski, who successfully launched his own franchise with A Quiet Place, hopes to buck the trend by releasing his latest, If, a big-budget family film starring Ryan Reynolds. The movie, whose title stands for “Imaginary Friend” was also written by Krasinski and boasts a who’s who of actors voicing the titular characters, including his former The Office co-star Steve Carell, wife Emily Blunt, and ultra-famous colleagues like George Clooney, Bradley Cooper, Jon Stewart, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Matt Damon, and many more.
Given all that star power, the film seems likely to come in first at the box office this weekend, but the reviews (so far) have been largely unkind. The film wasn’t screened in many major markets (such as my own), so some of us will be hitting early screenings tomorrow night to file our reviews.

Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande star in director Jon M Chu’s new musical adaptation. Take a look at the new Wicked trailer.
Jon M. Chu’s Wicked is one of this year’s most awaited film musicals. Starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, Chu’s film is adapted from the hugely popular, and rather good, stage musical. Recently, Chu also confirmed that the film would use live vocals, which isn’t surprising as both Grande and Erivo have pretty good pipes for this sort of thing.
The story proved too big for a single film, so Chu and writer Winnie Holtzman have divided it into two parts. We assume the first part will adapt the musical’s first act while Wicked Part Two will do justice to the second act, but don’t quote us on that.
A new trailer has just landed online as well, albeit not on a broomstick.

“If,” a fantasy-comedy from director John Krasinski and star Ryan Reynolds, looks to collect a promising $40 million in its box office debut.
Based on projections, “If” — short for imaginary friends — is tracking to land at least $35 million and as much as $45 million from 4,000 North American theaters. At the higher end of estimates, those ticket sales would mark a solid start for a live-action PG family film that’s not based on an existing property. But the movie cost $110 million, so it’ll need to resonate globally to justify its price tag. Ahead of its domestic release, “If” opened last weekend in two overseas markets, France and Belgium, where it’s earned $3.7 million to date. It lands this week in 56 additional international territories.
Krasinski wrote, directed and stars in “If,” which follows neighbors Cal and Bea (Reynolds and Cailey Fleming) with the ability to see other people’s imaginary friends. While...

Revisiting The Box Office Failure Of Shah Rukh Khan’s Fan. (Photo Credit – IMDb)
Shah Rukh Khan, despite establishing himself as one of the most commercially successful stars, has never shied away from experimenting with films. While sometimes he succeeded with his choices, the other times, he fell really hard. One such project is Fan, which turned out to be a big failure at the Indian box office despite a good start. Keep reading to know more!
The combination of Yash Raj Films and Shah Rukh Khan has hardly gone wrong, and even for this 2016 release, fireworks were expected at ticket windows. Released during the summer of 2016, the film had built a solid buzz around itself with a powerful trailer and a ‘Jabra Fan’ song. When it arrived in theatres, the film saw mostly favorable reviews from critics coming in. Sadly, it didn’t translate into the box office numbers.

The curtain falls on Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes with a gripping and intense conclusion that sets the stage for future conflicts in this long-standing franchise. The film shifts its thematic lens by focusing on ape-on-ape violence, diverging from previous entries that grappled with man’s inhumanity to animals. A New Hero and a Ruthless Villain The story introduces us to Noa, played by Owen Teague, who embarks on a treacherous journey after his village is attacked by masked ape soldiers under Proximus Caesar’s brutal regime. According to a brief plot overview, Our new hero is the young ape

When 20th Century Fox began production on the first "Planet of the Apes" film, they enlisted special effects makeup artist John Chambers to help transform actors like Roddy McDowall, Kim Hunter, Maurice Evans, and James Whitmore into anthropomorphic apes. Chambers was already famous for having perfected Spock's Vulcan ears on "Star Trek," but a society of intelligent apes who were capable of communicating was like something straight out of "The Twilight Zone." Rather than create ape masks, Chambers instead crafted individual prosthetic pieces to be applied in sections, allowing the actors to emote with their own facial muscles -- a technique that revolutionized the art of special effects makeup.
Now, over 50 years later, the intelligent apes have traded practical makeup prosthetics in favor of breathtaking and realistic digital artistry. When it comes to 2011's "Rise of the Planet of the Apes," /Film's Larry Fried declared, "There is simply no...

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, the 10th and latest entry in the 56-year-old science fiction film series, made more than $58 million at the box office in its opening weekend. Not only did the movie exceed analysts’ expectations but it proved that seven years after the previous film in the cycle, and nearly six decades since the whole barrel of monkeys started, there is still an audience out there for this venerable and fascinating concept.
Which is all the more impressive when you consider how much of a unicorn this series is among the various stories, brands, and “intellectual property” revisited time and again by modern film studios. Whereas other franchises are eager at constantly revisiting their pasts, the Apes movies have proved remarkably elastic in stretching their concepts in the direction of new ideas and stories. There is of course some pushback by fans. A brief perusal of...

Kavin’s latest film, Star, has taken a decent stride at the box office, showcasing steady growth and managing to recover its production costs within the first week.
The movie opened strong on Friday, raking in 2.8 crore. It defied the usual weekend trend by maintaining collections at 3.75 crore on both Saturday and Sunday, instead of the expected Sunday surge. Monday witnessed a typical weekday drop, with collections dipping to 1.25 crore. As of Tuesday, early estimates suggest Star earned between 1.05-1.10 crore, bringing its five-day domestic total to a commendable 12.60-12.65 crore range.
Star’s Budget Gamble Pays Off
Interestingly, Star was reportedly made on a budget of 8 crore, which later went up to 12 crore. This is a significant investment for a film featuring a rising star like Kavin. However, considering Kavin’s last two ventures,...

Paramount will keep its chin up high amid the whole Sony and Skydance takeover headlines and keep the summer box office churnin’ with the John Krasinski-directed/scripted/produced Ryan Reynolds-led family movie, If, which is hoping to hit $40M. This is after Disney’s overperformance with 20th Century Studios’ Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, which posted a $58.4M opening.
If‘s m.o. is to be a five-quad movie appealing to everyone from 2 to 80. It’s been awhile since the marketplace has had a PG-rated live-action original movie, hence if the studio hits $40M on this $110M production, celebrate it.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes has had fans of the franchise hooked ever since its release. The film acts as a fresh take on the iconic film series, following a world long after the events of the War of the Planet of the Apes. It also has an exceptional cast of actors, as well as Wes Ball as its director.
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes
The film paid homage to the original Planet of the Apes in many ways, having several scenes reminiscent of the classic. While many fans thought this would end their affair, the director seems to have other intentions. Could the Charlton Heston classic get a sequel almost 60 years after its release?
A Revival of the Planet of the Apes?
Wes Ball recently gave an interview with IndieWire, where he talked about his recently released film, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.

There’s no shortage of lovable ape characters in the “Planet of the Apes” franchise, who act to balance out the grim, philosophical nature of the narrative – and exemplify the best potential of non-human humanity at the same time. The chimp scientists Zira and Cornelius in the original series, Caesar’s closest ally Maurice the Orangutan in the rebooted trilogy, and Raka in the recently released Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes fit perfectly in this trope. Despite having very brief screen time in the movie, Raka became a fan favorite character through his humorous antics, but especially because of what the character represents in the larger context of the overarching narrative. Even though Raka possibly didn’t survive (or did he?), by the end of the movie, as a character he has left a lingering effect on the future of the rebooted Planet of the Apes franchise, which...

Pretty much anyone who writes or talks about the box office (myself included) has not been quiet about the fact that the summer season is off to a rough start. It certainly didn't help that the first third of 2024 was lagging more than 20% behind 2023 in terms of overall domestic ticket sales, which put undue pressure on the summer movie season to deliver the goods. Universal Pictures kicked off summer with "The Fall Guy" and, unfortunately, the film didn't quite deliver the goods on opening weekend. However, there is reason to be tepidly optimistic as Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt's action-heavy rom-com didn't collapse in its second weekend.
While "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes" conquered the box office with a $58.5 million opening, "The Fall Guy" managed to hold relatively strong in second place with $13.7 million in its second frame. That represents a 51% drop compared to its disappointing $27.7 million opening weekend.

The first Iron Man film led by Robert Downey Jr. was the lynchpin that kicked off the MCU more than a decade ago. The flamboyant billionaire who went on to build a suit of armor from metal scraps in a cave became a household name when it was released in 2008. Downey Jr. would become a big movie star and the character would become synonymous with him.
Tony Stark builds his prototype armor in Iron Man
The film had many memorable moments including Tony Stark’s time with Yinsen as they are kept captive by the members of the Ten Rings. As Stark is tasked with building a Jericho missile, He and Yinsen develop a great friendship through their conversation. However, a deleted scene from the film shows Tony doing some laundry for his captors. While fun, it is understandable why it was removed.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is now playing in theaters with an impressive box-office opening which all but guarantees we haven’t seen the last of those damn dirty apes. It remains to be seen how many more sequels we’ll get, but Planet of the Apes franchise producers Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, who also wrote Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, told THR that they originally envisioned a nine movie arc for the modern franchise.
“When you first came up with this idea, the Apes franchise way back, you saw nine movies,” Silver said. “We thought, ‘This is crazy ambitious.’ But here we are. We’re at four.“
“I saw nine. I don’t know if we’ll make it to nine. I would love it,” Jaffa replied. “We’ve spoken to not just [director Wes Ball, writer...

Even though chatter has died down quite a bit since the movie opened in early April, A24's "Civil War" has managed to do pretty well for itself at the box office. Director Alex Garland's politically-charged view of a future America divided by war has found an audience even as bigger movies like "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire," "The Fall Guy," and now "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes" have entered the marketplace. So much so that it now ranks as A24's second-biggest movie of all time at the global box office, and only the company's second title to cross the $100 million mark.
In its fifth weekend of release, "Civil War" added $1.8 million domestically to its growing total. It stayed in the top ten, coming in just above the re-release of "Star Wars: The Phantom Menace" ($1.5 million) and just below "Kung Fu Panda 4" ($1.82 million). That...

In a much-needed bit of good news for the box office in 2024, "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes" had a very solid opening weekend. Hailing from Disney's 20th Century Studios, the latest entry in the long-running sci-fi franchise opened to $58.5 million domestically. That figure is $2 million above the $56.5 million estimates that hit the boards on Sunday. That's good news, as it suggests word of mouth was strong out of Friday and Saturday screenings heading into Mother's Day.
Director Wes Ball's film took in an additional $72.7 million from overseas markets to date, giving it a $131.2 million global start. That is even higher than 2017's "War for the Planet of the Apes" ($130 million), meaning it's the best worldwide opening for the modern "Planet of the Apes" franchise. Now, it's still got a very long way to go to get anywhere near the outsized global total of 2014's "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes...

While promoting the new Garfield animated pic, Chris Pratt briefly touched on his past performance as the princess-saving Brooklyn plumber, Mario.
Despite receiving negative reviews from critics, the 2023 animated Super Mario Bros. Movie was an unexpected blockbuster, as it went on to set the record for biggest global opening for an animated movie.
After everything was said and done, the movie made $1.362 billion globally on a meager $100 million production budget. That feat made The Super Mario Bros. Movie the most financially successful film of 2023, according to Deadline Hollywood.
A sequel was officially announced on March 10, 2024, as part of Mario Day celebrations and given an April 3, 2026 release date.
Speaking to Total Film, Pratt teased, "I can't tell you much but I can say that there is another Mario movie coming. It gets me very excited thinking about the world of Mario and Nintendo in general, I think over the next decade...

It takes a veritable village of vendors to make a movie theater as appealing as possible, and if ever cinemas need to sparkle — from floors to seats to bathrooms to you name it — it’s now, as the summer box office gets underway. The one-two punch of the pandemic and Hollywood’s labor wars created a perilous slowdown in content that, which means 2024 will have a very tough time matching the $9 billion grossed last year. Without a big Marvel to kick off the season over the May 5-7 weekend, revenue is lagging badly over last year. But there’s still plenty of opportunity for improvement.

Apes box office strong!
20th Century Studios/Disney's Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is off to a great start at the global box office after exceeding expectations with a $130M+ opening weekend.
Despite positive reviews, the latest Apes adventure received a disappointing "B" CinemaScore, which suggested that audiences may not be quite as taken with the movie as the majority of critics. Even so, Kingdom managed to take $58.5 million in North America and $72.7 million overseas for a worldwide start of $131.2 million.
This puts the film ahead of Sunday’s domestic estimates of $56.5 million to give it the third-best opening of the year to date, as well as the second-best launch of the franchise after Matt Reeves' Dawn of the Planet of the Apes back in 2014.
The movie has a reported budget of $160 million.

Ed Harris — recently seen starring alongside Kristen Stewart in “Love Lies Bleeding” — is getting back behind the camera to direct his own adaptation of Kim Zupan’s acclaimed novel “The Ploughmen.” Owen Teague, currently playing the lead in “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” Nick Nolte and Bill Murray have come on board to star in the neo-noir crime thriller, which will go into production in Montana this Fall. Amy Madigan and Lily Harris are also set for the film.
“The Ploughmen” will mark Harris’ third feature as director after his Western “Appaloosa” and multi-Oscar nominated “Pollock.” Described being in the vein of “Hell or High Water” and “Wind River,” the film is set in the wilderness of Montana, where a strange friendship develops between a haunted young deputy sheriff and a notorious old murderer. John Gload (Nolte) is a killer so adept at his job that only now has he been apprehended.

Monday Am: These apes are going to need a bigger boat for their cash that is as 20th Century Studios’ Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes came in over expectations with a $58.5M opening. Matt Reeves believed that he was going to be fired from Dawn of the Planet of the Apes when he suggested one crucial change to the plot point. He was brought in to helm the film in October 2012 after Rupert Wyatt, the first film’s director, dropped out of the project. Reeves suggested telling the story from Caesar’s point of view and beginning the film during the creation of ape civilization rather than in a post-apocalyptic world.

The success of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes shows how, for almost 60 years, the series has managed to sustain audience interest
By pure hot-streak longevity, the most impressive feat in Hollywood franchising is the Mission: Impossible series, which began in 1996 and may – may – finally wrap up next year, after eight entries and nearly 30 years without a single continuity reboot. But true to the fictional history of the Planet of the Apes series, it may be the apes who ultimately inherit this title from the petty, small-minded humans. The original Planet of the Apes came out in 1968 – and based on first weekend box office and positive reviews for Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, the latest installment of a rebooted series that began in 2011, the series will probably remain when the first movie reaches its 60th anniversary in just four years. This may be the most purely resilient series in Hollywood.
Rajkummar Rao’s latest offering, “Srikanth”, has made a commendable mark in its opening weekend, securing double-digit figures. Despite the competition from the Hollywood blockbuster “Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes”, “Srikanth” managed to stand tall, particularly in urban centers where it garnered significant revenue.
The film’s box office performance showcased steady growth, with Friday recording ₹2.41 cr, Saturday ₹4.26 cr, and Sunday ₹5.28 cr, totaling ₹11.95 cr. Notably, the film’s success is even more remarkable as it refrained from resorting to promotional tactics like Buy1Get1 free ticket offers, setting a commendable precedent.

“Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” debuted on top of the mainland China box office with an opening weekend score of $11.4 million (RMB81.1 million).
That was only the fourth weekend this year that a Hollywood film has topped the China charts and the third time in 2024 that a Hollywood title has opened on top. “Apes” was also the top film this weekend in North America and international markets.
Data from consultancy firm Artisan Gateway showed that the film accounted for some 30% of the theatrical total on a weekend where theaters earned a combined $38.2 million. The nationwide total represented a significant slump compared with the previous May Day holiday weekend which was worth $109 million.
On a year-to-date basis, Chinese theaters have earned $2.92 billion. That still leaves China as the world’s biggest theatrical market so far in 2024, ahead of North America where cumulative takings amount to $2.29 billion. But the gap...

“Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” opened in second place at the South Korean weekend box office, a distance behind local holdover title “The Roundup: Punishment.”
“Punishment,” the fourth part of Don Lee’s “Roundup” action franchise, dominated proceedings for the third weekend in succession. It earned $5.53 million and advanced its cumulative total to $67.7 million, according to Kobis, the tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council (Kofic). Its earnings represented a still strong 58% share of the weekend theatrical market, but they were also down by 60% week-on-week, suggesting that “Punishment” may not reach the heights of the previous franchise elements.
In 2022, “The Roundup” earned $95.7 million (using current rates of currency exchange), while last year “The Roundup: No Way Out” earned $76.3 million.
“Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” recorded $2.45 million between Friday and Sunday with a 26% market share. Over its full five-day opening in Korea, the film earned $3.10 million from 415,000 ticket sales.
