Actually a good movie

I do not expect much when waching a movie produced for the german publicly funded broadcasting service zdf. But this one is actually good. The acting is servicable. The storie is not to unbelievable in the context of a fairy tale movie aimed at kids. The production value is good. The music is good to great (I like the music choice for the wiches especially).

To end this review here are some things i would like to mention expicitly: -Jerry Hoffmans Character Prince Tanka is introduced as Prince from a foeign Kingdom, therefore his skincoulor does not stand out in this medieval european Fairy Tale.

-there is some deliberate overacting with the evil witches, some people might not like that but I do.

-This Movie doesn't attempt to deconstruct morals and social norms of the past acording to current morals and social norms. At least not to much.

-I only watched the german version of this movie, I cant judge any translation that might exist.

-this movie does not have any grand and important message, it's just an enjoyable adventure movie that can we watched with the whole family.

Perfectly cast and filmed and done

Warning: Spoilers
The now traditional fairy-tales-turned-into-movies series by the German public TV stations are all exquisite, I liked this in particular, since it is a bridge between the traditional fairy tales and the more up-to-date fantasy stuff like (even) Game of thrones. The story is great, fun+adventure+romance+great scenery, cute animals in addition, the cast is excellent (many great names like Ken Duken, Jana Pallaske, Jürgen Vogel etc.), the soundtrack likewise. For me the message is female power (and loyalty) through all the female characters (including the cute rat) and on the side some arrogant men (king, prince) are being taught a lesson, but without embarassing them, and ending in reconciliation. And like others wrote: since this is a new character and being introduced as a prince from a country far away, it does not feel unnatural / coerced / out of place that the prince is black, and the actor is doing a fine job / is the right choice. Cripping and entertaining and a lot of heart - wonderful addition to the fairy tale movie-series.
