Warner Bros. Discovery cable warrior Kathleen Finch is heading into her Super Bowl: the holiday season at Food Network.
“Fans come and we supersize them and super serve them with all this holiday content, daytime content, and primetime stuff,” Finch told Variety. “We have four big returning series this year, and that’s just talking about Christmas. We start with Halloween, and we started early and had a lot of really great stuff that worked really well and kicked off our strong ratings early in September.”
More than 63 million total viewers watched Food Network in the fourth quarter of 2022, and Finch is anticipating year-over-year growth for this season’s slate, which includes new series “Selena + Chef: Home for the Holidays” and “The Elf on the Shelf: Sweet Showdown.”

Since most of discovery+’s content is available on Max, some users might decide the time is now to upgrade.
The race to profitability is on, and streaming customers are facing the choice of getting out of the way or getting trampled. Ad-free streaming plans are rising in price all over the marketplace, and discovery+ got in on the game this week when it informed customers that effective immediately, its commercial-free plan was rising in price from $6.99 to $8.99 per month.
Ad-supported discovery+ brings in more money per subscriber than the ad-free plan, so its price is staying the same at $4.99 per month. But considering that much of the content from discovery+ is now available on Warner Bros. Discovery’s flagship streaming platform Max, some customers might be wondering if the time is now to make the switch.

BBQs, pool parties, hiking, meals with family and friends. Or … or … you can forget all that and watch some great stuff on TV this Labor Day weekend. This is a list for those who choose the latter, a rundown of 10 worthwhile movies and shows now available to stream.
The Flash — Max
Warner Bros. boss David Zaslav infamously declared The Flash “the best superhero movie I’ve ever seen.” When the film was released in May, everyone wondered how many superhero films Zaslav had watched before this one. Yet the DC title starring Ezra Miller (which is a whole other conversation) also wasn’t nearly as lousy as its shockingly low box office suggested. The Flash is a modern-day spin on Back to the Future with clever dialogue, some affecting moments and, for once, a climactic CG-filled battle that isn’t the solution to the superhero’s crisis.

Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water! Now that summer is nearly over, Shark Week and The Meg 2 have swum off into the horizon and killer whales seem to have stopped attacking boats, you’d think the ocean would be a bit less unsettling. Nope, not once The Swarm surfaces this September on The CW! Based on Frank Schatzing’s 2004 sci-fi novel about a massive underwater life force targeting mankind, the series is hitting our screens after a European run earlier this year. And it’s both an eco-thriller and straight-up scarefest. “When I was thinking about it, I thought I’d much rather make a monster movie than a disaster movie,” says showrunner Frank Doelger (Game of Thrones). “I like the idea of a group of people out there knowing something’s problematic, [but] they don’t know what it is, so they...

Exclusive: It’s a tough time to be a mid-sized unscripted production company right now.
A slow-down of greenlights amid cost cutting within all of the major media conglomerates, and seemingly no bump from the writers and actors strike despite what many were expecting, has led to doom and gloom across the non-scripted sector.
This has led to many companies having to undergo layoffs. Deadline understands that companies including Bunim/Murray, Half-Yard Productions and Propagate Content have all cut staff recently and more are expected to follow suit. ITV America-backed High Noon Entertainment informed its local production staff in Denver that due to production cycles, the number of workers contracted when shows weren’t in production would be reduced. We hear Hot Snakes Media is in a similar situation.
“It’s the toughest time to be in unscripted that I can remember,” one unscripted producer told Deadline.

In his exclusive uInterview, Discover’s Shark Week host Dr. Austin Gallagher explains important information about what a person should do if they encounter a shark in the water.
He advised that if you come across a shark while you are swimming, you should try to assert your dominance rather than swim away from the shark.
“Standing your ground and making eye contact with, you know, the big predatory sharks like tigers and whites usually is what you need to do,” he stated. “In order to, you know, kind of assert your dominance.”
Typically, when one sees a shark their first instinct is to get away from it as fast as possible, but this can actually make the situation worse. “If you start swimming away fast, yeah, that’s what you want to do, but sometimes you look like a prey item.”

August is often referred to as the “Dog Days of Summer,” and it’s not just because of the intense heat that is permeating the country, but also because at a certain point, the box office just dies, as people go on vacation and others prepare to return to school in September.
This is a particularly onerous August, not just due to the ongoing strikes that will guarantee no late night talk show appearances … or shows, for that matter. But also, since July got super-primed by the whole “Barbenheimer” craziness, as well as how well “Sound of Freedom” has done (after barely getting a mention in my July preview), the pressure is on more than ever.
Still, the best bets for the month will be the franchise films, with a number of comic book movies and a sequel to a surprise hit. Read on for Gold Derby’s August 2023 box office preview.

It’s starting to appear as if Warner Bros. Discovery knew what it was doing when the company kept discovery+ as a standalone service. The company originally intended to merge it completely with HBO Max this year, but pivoted in February to a plan that saw much of discovery+’s content migrate to its new streamer Max, but also left discovery+ as a separate entity that customers could subscribe to on its own.
New data released by research firm Kantar is showing that was a good decision. Kantar’s numbers show that discovery+ was among the fastest-growing subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) services on the market in terms of subscriber share during the second quarter of 2023, despite the fact that the launch of Max took place on May 23.

When Jaws emerged in the summer of 1975, it created the shark horror genre as we know it today, spawning countless rip-offs in its wake. Some good. Some bad. Some just plain ugly.
The new Shudder documentary Sharksploitation is a must watch for lovers of this particular trend, and it dives deeper into the phenomenon to explain why we love these types of films.
Endless movies now exist within this “shark exploitation” category – many being talked about this week in honor of Discovery Channel’s 35th annual Shark Week.
Even if most don’t match the magic of Steven Spielberg’s classic, many great shark films exist within the “sharksploitation” subgenre. And some of them even happen to be sequels.
In honor of Shark Week, and Meg 2: The Trench, here are five under-appreciated shark sequels.

But, did you know that there are more that 350 different species of sharks that exist and even more are continuing to be discovered and studied.
In Forrest Galante’s Discovery Shark Week special “Alien Sharks: Strange New Worlds” the focus is on some of these lesser known shark species and spotlights many of their unusual and distinct chrematistics that set them apart from other species of sharks. “Alien Sharks: Strange New Worlds” is described, “The tip of South Africa is a hotspot for unusual sharks that exhibit bizarre behaviors and unusual, otherworldly appearances. We had the amazing opportunity to catch up with Marine Biologist Tom “Blowfish” Hird to discuss his two Discovery Shark Week specials, “Cocaine Sharks” and “Great White Fight Club”! It was a fascinating chat with Hird, as we dive into some of the story behind “Cocaine Sharks” where Hird and his team study shark behavior patterns in the Florida Keys. It is an area where researchers believe that the ocean may become contaminated with cocaine due to increased drug smuggling in the region. First, we have “Cocaine Bear” and now “Cocaine Sharks”….uh, oh! It is definitely a fascinating topic to discuss.

If you ever had any doubt about how corporate mergers can make for strange bedfellows — and it’s 2023, so you should have gotten this memo long ago — one need look no further than After the Bite, a documentary programmed to play like the answer to the generally unasked question, “What would happen if Warner Bros. Discovery chief David Zaslav forced HBO to participate in Shark Week?”
Presumably, the creative origins of Ivy Meeropol’s (Bully. Coward. Victim. The Story of Roy Cohn) film and Discovery’s annual celebration of all things toothy and ichthyological were completely separate. But following its initial airing on HBO, After the Bite will migrate over to Max, where it can be promoted next to such Shark Week titles as Serial Killer Red Sea Attacks, The Shark of the Moral Universe Bends Toward Carnage and Great White Fight Club (only two of those are real).

Ever since the 1975 horror blockbuster Jaws made us afraid to go into the water, America has had an obsession with sharks. While great whites get most of the attention, any aquatic killer with sharp teeth will usually quench our collective thirst for marine menace. In 1988, Discovery Channel launched Shark Week, a seven day block of programming filled with nature documentaries, celebrity cameos, and aquatic reality TV designed to explore the wide world of sharks. This annual event has been going strong for the past 35 years, working its way into the public consciousness to become a household name. Each summer’s horror offerings usually bring with it one or more films of the Shark Horror subgenre. Featuring the underwater predators as their villains, these movies vary widely in quality and usually sink or swim based on the verisimilitude of their special effects.

Dr. Austin Gallagher, biologist and host of Discovery’s Shark Week special, Belly of the Best: Feeding Frenzy, discussed his experience with coming face to face with a great white shark for the special in an exclusive uInterview.
Gallagher’s program was chosen to kick off the 2023 Shark Week television schedule. The special sent Gallagher down into a whale decoy while his team gathered data about the behavior of great white sharks in South Africa.
Gallagher explained the danger that great white sharks in South Africa are currently facing.
“South Africa has been ground zero for Shark Week for almost three decades now. That is because it’s a white shark hotspot, and we have been very fortunate to study and film there for so long,” said Gallagher, who has been featured on Shark Week many times. “The situation has changed in the last two years. The 35th edition of Discovery Channel’s Shark Week is officially underway, marking the return of the annual fan-favorite weeklong shark celebration. Shark Week began in 1988 as a fun means of educating audiences on the aquatic predator, counteracting the negative representations of sharks in popular culture that began with the seminal aquatic horror feature Jaws (now available to stream on Peacock).
Jaws didn’t just make people afraid to go into the water; its massive blockbuster success inspired an enduring wave of “sharksploitation” horror that’s become a summer mainstay. Naturally, in celebration of Shark Week, this week’s streaming picks bring the aquatic terror. Shudder’s new documentary Sharksploitation breaks down this subgenre further, packed with insights from filmmakers and scientists alike, for further viewing to complete your Shark Week watchlists.

Discovery’s Shark Week has been a TV institution for 35 years, a summertime staple that has never changed its core purpose: Celebrating the great white and its brethren.
But a lot has changed around Shark Week in the decades since, including an explosion of popularity, more competition, a few controversies and one giant corporate acquisition. In 2023, the Warner Bros. Discovery-produced TV event now has a few more boxes to check: From keeping its linear ratings (which grew 10% year-over-year in 2022) up to driving customers to two streaming platforms, Max and Discovery+. Shark Week has also been enlisted to help promote other TV shows and movies in the Wbd family. But it also faces lingering concerns over the makeup of its programming (often criticized for lacking enough scientific research or proper experts), while simultaneously competing with younger copycat programming from rival companies Nat Geo’s Sharkfest.

There are few human obsessions that match our all-consuming fascination with sharks. They’re one of the rare animals with a national commemorative anniversary — or “holiday” depending on how invested you are in Shark Week — and their almost mythic-like status among the animal kingdom has provided endless fodder for film.
Sharks’ boneless cartilage frame places them in the classification of “elasmobranch” fish, grouping them with rays, sawfish, and skates. While it’s widely known that sharks are not as interested in feasting on human flesh as sci-fi, adventure, and horror movies portray them to be, most people would prefer not to take their chances getting close enough to confirm. With movies dating back as far as Jerry Hopper’s 1956 “The Sharkfighters” (and possibly sooner), filmmakers have made shark movies for nearly seven decades and they’ll likely continue that track record for as long as sharks are around. This week, HBO Max faded to black — and was reborn as Max. But many people are still wondering: Why did Warner Bros. Discovery decide to change the name?
HBO, after all, remains a solid-gold brand representing premium-quality original TV shows, going back decades, from “The Sopranos” and “Curb Your Enthusiasm” to “Game of Thrones” and “Succession.” Meanwhile, Max, as observers have pointed out, is a pretty generic name from a branding standpoint.
Here are the two basic reasons Warner Bros. Discovery chose to excise HBO from the HBO Max with the relaunch:
To signal a broader programming mix: HBO Max was positioned as the successor to HBO, but from the beginning included more than just what was on HBO proper. With Max, Wbd has stuffed in a slew of nonfiction programming from the legacy Discovery Communications side of the house — Max features 35,000-plus hours of content, more than doubling the...

Warner Bros. Discovery kicked off its 2023 upfront presentation in a no-frills way, with an overall brand sizzle and ad chief Jon Steinlauf giving a few remarks on stage at the Theater at Madison Square Garden Wednesday.
While the presentation covering HBO, Max, CNN, Food Network, HGTV, Discovery and more Warner Bros. Discovery brands was shorter than last year’s show (which was the company’s first since the merger that created it last April) the tight 90-minute presentation still covered each of its key divisions. Albeit, with much less sizzle, with no stars in attendance amid the writers strike.
“Let me just start by saying I am hopeful that a fair resolution is found soon with the writers,” HBO and Max chief Casey Bloys said, adding that he hopes for a return of talent to the stage, “making this a far more entertaining show” compared to “me and my clips.

Director Eli Roth entered the documentary feature world in 2021 when he helmed and starred in Fin, an advocacy title about the forces driving the global trade in shark fins and other products derived from the increasingly threatened animals. For five years, Roth — an avid shark lover — worked on the film, traveling the world to expose the barbarity undergirding the market. Scenes include Roth boarding an industrial fishing ship with dead sharks littering its floors, for example, and fishermen cutting open and/or beating the animals. Roth has called Fin, which was executive produced by Leonardo DiCaprio and Nina Dobrev, “the most terrifying movie I’ve ever made.”
But the horror helmer’s (Cabin Fever, Hostel) activism didn’t end with the film’s premiere on Discovery+ nearly two years ago. Ever since, he’s...

By his own account, Donald Trump is expecting to be indicted this week by the Manhattan District Attorney’s office.
The anticipated (and unprecedented) criminal charges against the 45th president don’t relate to Trump’s attempts to overturn the 2020 election by unleashing a bloodthirsty mob on the U.S. Capitol. Rather, they stem from a more tawdry scandal: Trump allegedly directed payment of hush money to an adult film actress ahead of the 2016 election to suppress a damaging allegation of a past affair.

Warner Bros. Discovery to Keep Discovery+ Standalone in Addition to Launching Combo HBO Max Streamer
Warner Bros. Discovery Inc. will keep Discovery+ as its own streaming offering in addition to launching the upcoming combined HBO Max/Discovery+ platform, an individual with knowledge tells TheWrap.
This decision comes as Warner Bros. Discovery prepares to launch the yet-to-be-named combined product of Discovery+ and HBO Max later this year.
Rather than combining both streamers in their entirety, the new platform will feature HBO Max content and most Discovery+ content. Discovery+ will remain available as a stand-alone option at a lower price.

Warner Bros. Discovery probably should have paid attention to its own viral slide show, the one that showed a general lack of crossover between HBO Max and Discovery+ subscribers.
The David Zaslav-led company has planned to combine the pricey Max and inexpensive Discovery+ into a new, singular platform this spring. That will still happen, though Discovery+ also will continue as a standalone service, a person with knowledge of the plans confirmed to IndieWire. Additionally, not all Discovery programming will go to the Max/Discovery+ hybrid service; some will remain exclusive to Discovery+.
Discovery’s Shark Week stunt programming and Chip and Joanna Gaines’s Magnolia Network shows will available on both Discovery+ and the coming hybrid service. The Wall Street Journal first reported the news.
It’s a last-minute shift, but one that makes sense when you consider the price and (self-reported) fanbase disparity between the brands. Why would...

With Major League Wrestling making its debut tonight on Reelz, the ad-supported cable channel hopes to recreate the impossible. Launched in 2006 as Reelz Channel, then best known as home to Leonard Maltin’s “Maltin on Movies” and hosting the Visual Effects Society Awards, it went through many iterations — until recently, none terribly successful. A year ago, it ranked a dim 51 in cable primetime among its key demo for advertising, adults 25-54.
And then, a miracle. On July 22, 2022, Reelz premiered “On Patrol Live,” its revival of the format behind canceled A&e hit “Live P.D.” Today, Reelz is No. 19 and its year-to-year ratings rose a whopping 274 percent
“We thought it would do well… it just blew everything out of the water,” Steve Cheskin, SVP of programming at Reelz, told IndieWire. “And it’s pulling everything up with it.”
Wisely, Cheskin will not refer to “On Patrol Live” as the return of “Live P.D.” For starters,...

What’s that, you say? There’s a new show about dragons on HBO tonight?
Unless you’ve been held in extreme isolation recently, you’re likely aware that House of the Dragon bows tonight on the cable channel and its streaming companion, HBO Max. But even with a purported 100 million marketing campaign behind tonight’s launch of the Game of Thrones prequel, the Warner Bros. Discovery family is leaving nothing to chance.
Thus, they’ve enlisted the shows under the Wbd purview to create banners for their “houses” to help drive awareness of tonight’s debut. That’s in hopes of reaching the one or two people who remain oblivious to the cultural force of nature about to hit.
A few of the selections:

Exclusive: For all the noise about David Zaslav’s quest to find 3 billion in cost-saving initiatives at the newly merged Warner Bros Discovery, what remains important to the new CEO is to spend on content where those dollars pay off.
And where is that? Why, on the launch of HBO’s near 200M Game of Thrones spinoff series, House of the Dragon, premiering this Sunday on both the linear pay-tv channel and streaming service HBO Max. Sources inform Deadline that HBO’s biggest marketing campaign ever is valued at over 100M in media spend (that’s a combo of ad spot value and hard cash shelled out). That’s a theatrical tentpole-sized marketing budget by all accounts, not some thrifty, Netflix-type push to subscribers on its menu. And as Zaslav pointed out today in his congratulatory memo to staffers (obtained by Deadline) before House of the Dragon‘s debut,...
