18 minutes of Star Wars
scaradu28 December 2019
If you're into Star Wars then this little gem is a must-watch. I don't want to make this review too long because the gist of it is this: it's with Obi-Wan and it is produced incredibly well, for a fan film at least. It's fan fiction like this that gives me and others new hopes that perhaps Star Wars can get back on track. So if Disney is reading this, head my advice: your new Kenobi series should get take notes from this and The Mandalorian. Or, in short, let passionate people, like the ones behind this fan film, bring true Star Wars to life.

It's only 18 minutes runtime by the way but that's 18 minutes more than the Rise of Skywalker...

A very impressive fan film!

I wasn't expecting much when I first stumbled across this as most of my fan film encounters have been underwhelming. If you don't overanalyze it or pick apart the effects you should enjoy this fun add-on to the Star Wars story line. It's a decently written & acted piece that I give strong kudos to for sets, costumes, & props.

Captures the essence of Star Wars better than Disney tripe
jakelanda19944 November 2020
Conflict between Kenobi and the empire, personal struggles, interesting predicaments and strong character development all in 18 minutes.

Disney had 3 feature length movies to do that and all they managed was a video game like plot with an endless cast of characters that offered nothing. Was seriously impressed by the production value in this film and Kenobi is actually really well cast. It's lacking the flair of modern Star Wars, but that allows it to do more for the story. Still manages to deliver cool fights scenes. Let down by acting in places but this is the only indication that it's a fan film.

Warning: Spoilers
"Kenobi: A Star Wars Fan Film" is an American English-language movie from Christmas 2019 and the title of course makes it very obvious what to expect here. You find out about the (film) universe in which this takes place as well as about the main character. The director here is Jason Satterlund and he is also one of several writers and one of those is Jamie Costa, the one who uploaded this on Youtube. He is also a producer here and, most of all, the actor who plays the title character. No surprise because acting is really his key profession. As for Satterlund, this is not his first Star Wars fan film, but certainly the one that audiences like the best and judging from the rating here on imdb, you can certainly say that he managed to improve over the last couple years. Another one who has a history with Star Wars is of course James Arnold Taylor. I won't go into detail here about his body of work, but I guess people who are bigger Star Wars fans than myself certainly know who he is and it shows. He is maybe the main reason why I liked this film a bit and eventually decided to give it a positive recommendation in what was a really close call. The introduction in the dark early on did not do too much for me. The lengthy sequence outside was much better and made this worth seeing I suppose. In the end, we are back in the dark again, but it is a really brief epilogue after some spectacular fighting that happened before that. There are more epic characters from the Star Wars universe included here, not just the one in the title that is played by Costa. Most of all, I am obviously talking about the boy. I guess people who like Star Wars more than I do, will have a fun time watching this one. Mine wasn't too bad either admittedly, but I'll never be a big fan I guess, also because the genre is among my least favorites. But JAT makes it worth seeing with his really convincing villain performance and everybody else isn't too shabby either.

This scored millions of views already in the last three months, although that perhaps should not surprise anybody too much given the fact that this is friggin' Star Wars. It received a pretty strong reception too with some people saying this takes the franchise back to the glory days with its retro approach and some even think that this is all that the most recent Star Wars blockbuster as missing. It's probably gonna be a while until a new Star Wars film will be made in Hollywood, if at all, but this one here may help people to spend the time until then. Also pretty smart title because I am sure this is going to generate additional clicks and attention because it sounds so similar to "A Star Wars Story" and there have been several in recent years. Close call like I said, but this one gets a thumbs-up from me. 19 minutes (including a really long closing credit sequence) worth watching, even if the rating here on imdb is way too high. That good it is not, even if there is no denying it is above-average for a fan film, already if we take a look at the convincing visual quality in terms of sets, effects and costumes.

Good old Star Wars atmosphere and a fan film that feels like it's far more than that
kovacevicmatija31 December 2019
The plot is engaging and managed to raise the stakes in a short time, the act is brilliant, fighting very realistic, cinematography and Tatooine scenery absolutely beautiful, costumes and props entirely believable, and the soundtrack (recorded by Budapest Scoring Orchestra) astonishing! Also, captain Leegus has a nice Krennic edge to him (played by James A. Taylor - the voice of Obi-Wan in TCW!). My only objection is the sound of an approaching Imperial vehicle seen through macrobinoculars, which should have been much quieter and distant-sounding. Otherwise, everything was executed nearly perfectly.

Satterlund's Kenobi has set a seriously high bar for any future fan film, as this looks, sounds and feels like far more. Most importantly, this is how Star Wars is done. Hopefully, we'll see more of it.

Better than Disney's Version
dabentster19 October 2022
This was a fun short little film. I was surprised by the quality of the acting and cinematography. This is one of the best fan films that I have ever seen. There is clearly a passion for the characters and the story behind this labor of love. Kenobi's character felt consistent with the films and you could see the inspiration from the comic books as well.

Now after having watched the official "Obi-Wan Kenobi" show on Disney Plus, I cannot help but compare the two projects. This fan film is better than the version Disney gave us. I wish we got this attention to detail in the Disney plus show, instead of some incoherent plot, inconstant character motivations, and events that feel completely disconnected from the source material.

Very good, my favorite star wars flick
djburnham2 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I had my doubts, but was very pleased with the results. Good acting. Good story. The little actress playing princess Leia does an excellent job, and was very believable in her role. She had many of the expressions, and body language that her older counterpart had introduced to the role. It was easy for me to imagine her as a very young version of the same princess from the early films. I was very impressed with this little actress. The interaction between Vader and Kenobi was well written. Also answers why Kenobi tells Luke in the first film that Vader killed Luke's father. The power showed by Vader and Kenobi was well done.

Nice idea. but it could be better.

Warning: Spoilers
The short fan film was funded via Indiegogo and was brought to you by producer and actor Jamie Costa, best known for his viral video of himself doing Robin Williams impressions. He's no stranger to Star Wars fan films since previously he portrayed the lead in "Han Solo: A Smuggler's Trade," a short film following the fan-favorite scoundrel on a new adventure. It has gained over 2.4 million views on YouTube.

Costa is joined by Tommy Snider as Owen Lars, Maxine Phoenix as Beru Lars, and Audie Rick as Luke Skywalker. Fans of Star Wars: The Clone Wars may notice actor James Arnold Taylor, who voiced Obi-Wan Kenobi in the animated series. In the Kenobi fan film, he plays a villain named Captain Leegus.

Kenobi also features a sweeping score by Andrew Gerlicher with The Budapest Scoring Orchestra performing the music.

The fan film is a nice treat for those who love Obi-Wan Kenobi. Lucasfilm is also planning a live-action Obi-Wan series starring Ewan McGregor on Disney+. The announcement was made during D23 Expo 2019 with Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy introducing McGregor on the Hall D23 stage. Not much is known about the series, but viewers can expect some sort of adventure on Tatooine, the home planet of Anakin Skywalker.

Slow Gin ..... BAAAAAM! HIT ME!!!
MrDavidCJohnson28 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Each sneaky little scene of this gem is POWER PACKED! Everything that I could say would be a spoiler! It rolls out very low key, as it should. These are dark times, and the Empire is just asserting its power so the energy is different ... Elusive. The story is slowly building as the corruption of the Sith and the Empire take hold. Old faces mix with the new characters, and fakers are uncovered .... Leia is kidnapped and the focus shifts from Luke on Tattooine to his sister being taken from Alderon. Kenobi must not give himself away to the inquisitors hunting him. It IS STAR WARS ... CRANKING UP SLOWLY!

Boring, Dull, an Insult to Fans
saramillerrrrr29 March 2023
Honestly don't waste your time with this. Non canon fan made mess. Writing is that have a child and the effects are laughable. Stay on YouTube maybe rather then making short films? I think if your a kid you will enjoy this film. If you are a Star Wars fan you will not.

Pacing is slow, the camera style is basic at best and that's being kind.

It's almost like they thought this was a good idea but never planned anything. I have seen Student films done better then what these grown adults made. And I won't go into detail or spoil it but just make it have more fights and maybe that could save it but even then I don't think it would. Just a pure mess never should have been made.

Why change the title? To get more attention?
Great movie you can tell these guys have a true passion for not only film but Star Wars as a whole. The camera work is impressive for a fan made film and the effects work while other fan made films struggle to feel real this one nails it ,but they changed they title just to get attention. I truly want to know why you guys did that? Takes away from the film in my option and is lazy. I'm that Karen I know I'm sorry!
