talking back about The Talkbackers
This documentary first presented on the Israeli YES satellite channel and now issued on DVD deals with one of the most interesting developments of the last years on Internet - the talkbackers or reactions of Internet users to news items, political comments, sports or entertainment items of the Web sites or Web editions of the newspapers. Not surprisingly the phenomenon caught up very fast in Israel, probably more and earlier than any other place in the world - Israel being a country with a well developed Internet infrastructure, with an articulated public opinion and a lot of hot subjects to talk about.
Zvika Binder's film does not focus however on technology, sociological or statistics aspects of the talk-back frenzy, but rather on the human ones. The principal hero of the movie is the director's father, a truck driver who receives his first computer as a present at the 59th anniversary and finds himself (or is found by his son) absorbed in the Internet universe. The movie can be looked at as a family movie, Dov Binder has a human dimension and it's difficult not to like this opinionated Israeli guy, so willing to share his immense knowledge and opinions with the folks around and finding in the Internet the media to do it.
Dov Binder is not the only talkbacker we get to know, a few other figures, some famous in the Israeli Internet space are discovered and revealed, and without making absolute judgments the movie lets them answer questions related to the way they became familiar with the Internet and why they are communicating using this media. A broader question like do the opinions of these people really matter, or is it more a question of self realization remains quite open. A few other questions remain nuts to tough to crack in this film that lasts a little less than one hour - especially the issue of the balance between the freedom of expression and the need to protect civilized users of the Internet against security dangers like impersonation which was dealt in a simplifying manner in my opinion.
This being a first viewer opinion on this film, I am happy to provide a talk back to The Talkbackers on IMDb. It deals with an important theme in quite an entertaining way and it has humanity and does not bore which is remarkable for a documentary with such an apparently dry subject.
