Film CommentaryDhammam is part of SonyLiv’s anthology series Victim, who’s Next? featuring four short films.Bharathy SingaravelSpoiler alert: This article is not a review and discusses some scenes in detail. The scene opens to a Buddha half buried in the mud. A girl, possibly no more than ten-years-old, sits astride the idol’s shoulders. She tries to stand up, teetering on the edge, a gleeful smile on her lips as she spreads out her arms like wings. At this exact moment, her father working in a field nearby, breaks the spell. Shouting at her for her “irreverence” he drags the little girl off the statue, much to her annoyance. “You never let me fly! Hasn’t the Buddha himself said ‘there is no god?!” she demands. The father grumbles to himself about his ‘out-of-control’ daughter. The girl, miffed, but unrepentant, goes off to play in the mud chasing fish.

ReviewThe slow pace of the movie without a gripping screenplay proves to be its biggest drawback. Balakrishna GaneshanDark clouds have enveloped the sky and it is raining heavily in a jungle surrounded by hills. There is only a small hut in this mysterious place. The rain water washes away the soil and a hand appears. A suspicious old man who realises that the body was not buried properly takes an axe from his house and proceeds to chop the hand. It is with this promising premise that the Ravi Teja-starrer Rama Rao On Duty begins. These recruitment schools have parade competitions at the end of their training—something so fiercely fought over, that it lays the bedrock for the brutality bred into the police. This is the story the film attempts to tell us. Before the story begins, we are given a quick animated overview of the police department’s formation, mainly to remind us that it is an extension of colonial power. These animation sequences with voice overs are becoming a bit overused these days in Tamil cinema. Maybe there are other storytelling methods to convey the same information. That issue aside, Taanakkaran in this sequence, refers to the training of Indian recruits during colonial times. They competed with each other to move up within the system,...

Many of the aspects that have been pointed out as flaws are not unfounded — that it in many ways caters to an upper-caste gaze, though it is a film about Dalit-Bahujan lives. While it is a fair demand to make of anti-caste films, it’s also essential to examine the industry parameters within which Manjule may have been required to operate for Jhund, or the formulaic limitations in Kollywood within which Pa Ranjith or Mari Selvaraj or other even younger filmmakers work in. The latest in our series of writers highlighting overlooked gems is a recommendation for a rousing Tamil melodrama
Many of the Indian releases that pivoted to streaming over the past 18 months have deserved burial-by-algorithm, if I’m being honest. One that doesn’t is the Tamil melodrama Karnan, an exceptionally vivid spot of latter-day myth-making. You wonder whether writer-director Mari Selvaraj pitched it as “what if Baahubali” – the two-part SS Rajamouli epic that redrew the horizons of Indian commercial cinema back in 2015 – “but in the here-and-now?”. Enter our eponymous young hero (local megastar Dhanush), introduced completing a ritual that involves leaping off a rock overhanging a pool and, while still in mid-air, bisecting vermillion-daubed fish with a flashing blade. Lakes, swords: British viewers may be reminded of Camelot. Here’s another knight in search of a worthy cause.
Yet the surprise Selvaraj has for us – one of the biggest curveballs...

Another year, another bountiful crop of action filmmaking. The following article covers some of the best. Like with last year’s installment, the focus will be on action scenes—compact, heightened expressions of action filmmaking craft—rather than films as a whole, which means that some otherwise strong, action-adjacent pictures may be missing and a couple included films look fairly lackluster beyond their set pieces. For the sake of variety, I have limited myself to one scene per film, and all featured films made their official, non-festival, U.S. theatrical and/or streaming debut in 2021. The criterion of “official” excludes the Chinese direct-to-YouTube actioner One More Shot, which was removed after just a few days online. Whenever the film receives a more “legitimate” stateside debut, it will almost certainly be included in that year’s roundup. And now, to the action. The scenes have been organized into loose thematic...

Film CommentaryThe names of the characters in the movie represent a trend that is followed by marginalised sections defying the caste hegemony enforced upon them even in naming themselves.Sipoy SarveswarWhen I joined the Master’s programme at the University of Hyderabad, it provided me an opportunity to meet people from various parts of our country. As a student of anthropology, I was intrigued to see how socio-cultural reasons of that particular time and space play an imperative role in naming people. The theories of Culture Personality (propounded by Margaret Mead and Ruth Benedict) and Symbolic and Interpretive Anthropology (pioneered by Victor Turner and Clifford Geertz) offer us greater insights to understand why and how a certain pattern of naming can be observed in certain sections of Indian society. Culture Personality theory tries to understand the relationship between the culture of a society and the personality of the individuals in that culture.

Sowmya Rajendran*Major spoilers ahead In the village of Podiyankulam, a little donkey hops on the road, its front legs tied with a rope. Nobody takes notice of it. They understand that the donkey's legs have been tied to prevent it from running, going where its heart takes it. It's normal to treat it that way, the people believe. But not Karnan (Dhanush). Every time he sees the donkey, he is bothered by its bondage. The fact that it is not free. Mari Selvaraj, the director of Karnan, also frequently shows us shots of human legs, starting from the beginning when a child lies writhing on the road in the middle of an epileptic fit.
