Tadao Andô : Those old buildings were also built with heart and soul. We had to create something new while embracing them. Expansion projects are so difficult. Because we have to give ample thought to the existing buildings. I did study them exhaustively and we embraced them. When we approach from the old building to the new part, we might feel 'ah, life is interesting' In life we have good times and hard times. We turn sometimes to the right, sometimes to the left. This applies to expansion projects, we can't avoid making detours, life is still very interesting. In the same way, architecture is interesting. People might find this new space nice and quiet but they might feel like going back to the 'grandfather' building, then come back here again. Some people want to relive past architectural experiences again. It means they want to relive the past. That's nice.
