There is a clearly told story in this picture and it has qualities that hold interest. But we cannot say that the opening scene, in which a young couple lose their only child, is strongly acted. And as often happens when the picture begins weakly, the players find no point of setting out for truly human work and so much of the picture seems a bit artificial. The woman adopts a girl without the consent of her husband, but the child wins a right to remain. - The Moving Picture World, November 8, 1913
