Nice movie despite the clichés and the horrible ending.
diegopaes15 August 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Here we have a classical story of a simple hard-working poor boy, falling in love with a rich spoiled girl. There aren't many things you can do with this plot. That's because most of it have already been done. That is the classical "date movie", when two people struggle to be together in the end. People feel good about it, and even with the feeling "I think I have seen that before", people still enjoy it. Just like 10 in 10 Brazilian soap operas. Despite the dreadful edition, the movie director does a really nice job using almost all the clichés that he could remember. But what really bothered me is that you CAN make this kind of movie without getting into the Romeo and Juliet set up, when really bad choices by the characters (like "playing along" with the police) leads them to certain death. Overall it is a nice movie, but nothing beyond that. In terms of Brazilian cinema, where creativity and excellent ideas are used to surpass difficulties such as low budgets and horrible actors, this movie disappoints. Ps. Thiago Martins does a really good acting here, and Victoria Frate does the exactly same face 90% of the movie.

A touching and simple movie
welingto-12 August 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Breno Silveira invests in emotion and simplicity to build a story whose theme - economic and social inequality - is very complex and important to Brazilian society. Maybe the film is not reference for the viewer to drive down into the issue itself, but, of course, he will be touched by the story and the motivations of the characters.

Thiago Martins embodies Dé with great sensitivity, bringing a bit of history of the actor, also resident of a slum, to the character. He is the soul of the movie, he makes us to believe in the history of the couple, even in the most unlikely clichés moments. One of the most moving scenes is when Dé say to Nina's ex-boyfriend, a rich guy, on its status as a worker, a seller of hot-dog. At that point we visualize the millions of underemployed poorly paid, ignored by society, surviving in precarious housing in the country.

The end of the film has caused controversy. Some think outside the tone, exaggerated. I am not of that opinion. I think the final is poetic, emblematic, a request for assistance on behalf of love. Maybe some accused Breno Silveira of being naive, simplistic, but I think that is the price that he pays to be popular. We can not accuse him of lack of talent. Breno knows how to tell a story, how to reach the hearts of viewers.

terrible drama
juanmro-112 September 2009
Nothing like "Cidade da Deus" (City of God), Era uma vez... is a good movie, very realistic but with some problems of screenplay at the final. I don't know why they -the director and the writer- choose that final, is not necessary. Love story, big drama in a wonderful city with many faces like Rio de Janeiro. In this movie you can see the cruelty of the reality in a country where the injustice are so common to poor people. People live and die in Rio but if you put the attention in their faces you can't understand why they look so happy every day of their life's. I being there, in a funk party at night, and when I saw this movie I realize how unconscious was I to went there. May be because many of the people who live in the "morros" are workers and honest. If you are interest to know a little more than the wonderful beaches, women, men and the happy faces that you can see in the beach, this is a good movie to experiment how they live and how many injustice happened in our world.

Beautiful movie, with a very poetic ending. Must watch!
caiosigmaringa19 August 2009
Warning: Spoilers
Strongly based on Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, this movie had everything to be cliché. The old story about the rich girl who falls in love with the poor, ignorant boy. Add to that the fact that it is another one of those " favela ( slum ) movies " that appear each time more in Brazil, and you could say " I've already seen that ", before even watching. Except it isn't cliché, nor it is a favela movie. It's beyond that. It speaks out loud, on characters reactions to the main stars relationship, so many opinions, prejudices, that most of us have inside us, but don't even realize, because a story like this doesn't happen to everyone.

It shows how " This side ", the rich side, because of its prejudices and fears, oppress, misjudge, and ends up destroying lives, or even creating the criminals we fear.

Some people say the main character decisions are stupid. They aren't. The main character is someone who grew up in the favela, in fear, thinking he would never be like someone from " the beach ", the other side of town, and in the present is this oppressed person, who is embarrassed even to reveal to the girl he likes he works at the beach stand. And this affects he's decisions, since he always thinks the rich people will not understand him, and that he must fear them.

The ending has caused many controversy. Many people hated it, thought it was fake and over the top. I don't agree. Had the ending been the other way, it would still be a nice movie, but that's it. It wouldn't be this incredibly strong story. Maybe in real life things wouldn't have happened exactly like in the ending, but that's not the point. The ending was supposed to be poetic, and synthesizes many of the points brought up during the story.

Overall, it's a story full of clichés, but still refreshing and beautiful, with a very strong and poetic ending, although not very easy to swallow, and not the most feel-good either.

Great movie with terrible ending sequel...
jgabrielrpo23 September 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The movie is greatly written but the ending sequel was just a bunch of non sense errors... Why the hell Nina didn't scream "he saved my life" to cops, instead of run with Dé inside thr hot dog cabine? And why the hell she convince him to put the gun in her Head? Also, why the hell she leaves him to a clean shot from cops when she heards her father?? It doesn't makes sense at all! It's just to vilanize cops killing innocents... Sad, because the whole movie before the kidnap was great!

Another Great Brazilian Achievement
heitorch7 August 2008
This is the greatest Brazilian drama movie since Central do Brasil and could be compared to Sheakspeare's Romeo and Juliet.

If you live or have lived in Brazil you know that there is a lot of poverty around you and this movie portrays it really well. It shows how the rich people live next to the poor and the the barrier between both social classes. Aside form the amazing portrayal by Breno Silvera, of what Brazil is, the story really gets your attention from beginning to end. The end is shocking and realistically demonstrates what could happen in a real life situation.

The actors Rodrigo Costa, who lives in the Morro do Canta Galo (where the story takes place), and Cyria Coentro interpreted their characters as if the story was real. Later, Rodrigo Costa revealed in an interview with Maria Gabriela that he lived through a similar experience when younger.

Beautiful, poetic, dramatic, very good...
RosanaBotafogo15 September 2022
Rio de Janeiro. Dé (Thiago Martins) lives in the Cantagalo favela in Ipanema. Son of the maid Bernadete (Cyria Coentro) and abandoned by his father, Dé saw his brother Beto being murdered by a drug dealer and his other brother, Carlão (Rocco Pitanga), being exiled from the favela by bandits. Deciding not to follow the path of crime, Dé works selling hot dogs at a beach kiosk. From there he observes Nina (Vitória Frate), the only child of a wealthy family who lives in Vieira Souto, a street in front of Ipanema beach. The two meet on the beach and fall in love. However, the differences between their worlds of origin generate several veiled criticisms and prejudices.

A carioca fairy tale without a happy ending, great choice by Thiago Martins, excellent film, impeccable performances... beautiful, poetic, dramatic, very good...

Could have been even better if hadn't lacked self-confidence
naoquerolixo18 September 2008
Great plot, story and topic. Following the current trend, the "favela" environment is portrayed with great fidelity, and the same goes for the lifestyle of Rio's young riches. Action scenes are also great and certainly scrape your back from the seats. All the ingredients are there for a great movie. And it could definitely have been one. There are two main reasons it was not:

1. The spectator is not convinced of the true love that must have existed between the main characters for the film to be trustworthy. Most probable cause of this is the lack of key elements to evidence this connection (e.g. scenes where their fundamental values are shown to be similar). This cripples the actors' in their attempt to share screen chemistry.

2. The Romeo and Juliet inspiration is clear throughout the movie. This inspiration was definitely key in creating such a compelling story, but it seems that there was a failure to notice that, at a certain point, the film was already good enough to stand on its own. Because of this, we can almost feel the chains of the original Shakespeare story holding back the development of the movie. Of course there is a very interesting similarity between the two worlds, but allowing the modern story to creatively deviate from the original one would have definitely been a good idea.

All in all, it's one of those movies that - instead of making you mad for having watched such a bad film - it makes you terribly disappointed for not being able to enjoy a piece of art that could have been so much greater. Which, for many movie fans, is even worse.

Rich girl with a poor boy in Brazil, not a good movie ...
keepchila28 July 2008
Im Brazilian and I usually like the Brazilians titles like Tropa De Elite or Cidade De Deus that are grade 10 movies ...

But Era Uma Vez... is for sure the worst title I have seen in the last 5 years! the story is really bad and the end is ridiculous! Seriusly, if I tried to do a worst end I wouldn't be capable of ... The thing that really upset me is that during the film there are many smartest thing to the characters to do but they always choose the stupid options ! If I had seen from minute 1 to 80 I would give a grade 6 ... but after those last 10 minutes I just didn't gave 0 because the minimum is 1 ...

Well this is mine opinion ... fell free to comment

Watched on double speed and still a waste of my time
p-biemans-124 June 2021
Based on its fairly positive rating (7.1 at time of watching), I was expecting some original arthouse, or coming-of-age, or at least one of those sunny movies, buzzing in an uplifting dance of drama and passion that we all know Brazil for. As the movie proceeded, I observed the in itself interesting underpinning idea (rich girl from Ipanema falls in love with hotdog selling nêginho from the favela) was so disappointedly executed with uncharismatic acting, corny directing choices, and a hasty, unrealistic screenplay, that I could not connect at all emotionally with the characters in the movie and their one dimensional choices. I then decided to increase the watching speed (long live technology!) to see if things would pick up at any point but the only thing that happened was that the whole thing derailed just like a third-class soap opera but without the advertising - or it must have been for counter-intuitive family bonds, predictable drug lords, lack of loyalty and cheap, conditional love. Imploding into an absolutely unwatchable ending with people tumbilng down like the limp hotdogs our main guy sold at his stall... As a conclusion, the only thing I could do to make something useful out of this waste of time was to type this review for IMDB to warn anybody who appreciates movies and his own taste too much not to fall into the same trap as I did. One star still for the lovely overview shots of favela and beach, one star for the effort and one star for standing up for hotdog vendors.
