- Tom Berger, 12 years old, is steadily coming too late to school. The teachers punish him, his classmates bully him for that. Tom endures all this bravely. What nobody guesses: Tom has to supply himself and his two little sisters, Sophie (10) and Fanny (8) all alone.
The father has already left the family years ago and went underground totally, and Barbara Berger, the children's mother, keeps caring less and less for them. A few notes with short instructions, some money and occasional calls are everything what the children get to know about her. Also Cora, who moves into the flat under the Bergers, doesn't guess initially what's taking place there. Only the children's noise jars on her nerves.
On her urging to talk with the mother about it, Tom steadily invents new excuses. Only bit by bit little by little Cora discovers the siblings' drama and interferes.
