- The intrepid heroes, Vox Machina, find themselves facing the unexpected consequences of their defeat of the ancient blue dragon, Brimscythe. They are challenged to gather the tools and allies they need to meet this new threat.
- Some time after Vox Machina's battle with the Briarwoods, they are back in the capitol city of Emon, attending a ceremony at the palace. Sovereign Uriel takes responsibility for being magically manipulated into giving the Briarwoods authority, and to prevent such a thing happening again, he cedes his power to the rest of the council and steps down as ruler. As he does this, alarm bells ring, and four massive, ancient dragons fly into the city. The white dragon, Vorugal, freezes the palace's defenses with huge ice blasts. Another, the green dragon Raishan, floods the courtyard with deadly gas. Council member Allura Vysoren shields the Sovereign's family and the rest of the council, but Uriel is killed. Umbrasyl, a black dragon, spews acid on the city's populace, and Allura and Lady Kima try to stop him. Umbrasyl resists their attacks, and his acid causes the palace wall to crumble on top of them. Vox Machina rise amidst the carnage, and Vax'ildan sees a strange, dark figure lurking among the dead, before it vanishes. Vorugal descends upon the party and Shaun Gilmore, who throws up a shield to save them from the ice blast. The ice separates the party and Gilmore, and the three groups split up to rendezvous at Gilmore's Glorious Goods.
As the dragon's continued attacks decimate Emon's helpless population, Keyleth, Grog, Scanlan, and Vex'ahlia run into Raishan. She tries to gas them, but is stopped by Keyleth's wind gust. Raishan recognizes the half-elven druid, and Keyleth realizes the eye-like gems in the dragon Brimsyth's lair were conduits from the rest of the dragons to see through. Raishan dispels Scanlan's magic, and her hide resists Grog's enraged attack, destroying his great axe. With no other options, the party run for it. Across town, Umbrasyl sends acid raining down on the streets. Percy saves Vax from the acid, but is injured himself. Vex's dragon sense stops her group from running dead into the final and largest dragon: the red dragon Thordak, the Cinder King. His fire causes an enormous explosion in the city center. Pike heals Percy and the three flee from Umbrasyl, as Vex and the others manage to survive Thordak's fire. Thordak kills the places defenders, and sends a blast of fire through the center of the cloudtop district that shatters the entire palace, and crumbles the mountain it sat upon. Thordak speaks to the remaining populace, demanding their surrender and loyalty, and announces that Emon is now under the control of the Chroma Conclave. Vox Machina reunite and make it to Gilmore's shop, which is destroyed. They find Gilmore injured but alive, and he tells them to take any magical items left in the ruins before teleportation them to their keep on the outskirts of the city. The party argue about what to do, and civilians start to pour into the keep looking for shelter. Vorugal follows and slaughters most of them, but Vox Machina is able to retreat to Whitestone with a small group of using Keyleth's tree portal. Percy's sister and ruler of Whitestone, Cassandra, and Keeper Yennen take in the survivors and Gilmore.
Cassandra tells the party that Whitestone should be safe due to its secluded position, but the rest of the world is at the dragon's mercy. Yennen suggests that Vox Machina go to Vasselheim, an ancient and highly defensible city run by the continent's various religious orders. Scanlan argues that the country is lost, and suggests saving their own lives and leaving Tal'Dorei to its fate. More arguing ensues, and Scanlan leaves frustrated. The rest of the party find him, and he says they have no chance against forces so great. The sun rises over the newly rebuilt city of Whitestone, and the people they helped to save from the Briarwoods. Inspired by his friends, Scanlan agrees to fight. Keeper Yennen tells Vox Machina to go to the ruling forces of Vasselheim and petition of aid, but if they fail, to look for other, more hidden means of help. Keyleth attempts to tree portal them their using Yennen's discription.
In Emon, Umbrasyl and Vorugal report back to Thordak, who sends Umbrasyl to pillage the city of Westruun in his name. When he is finished, he is to hunt down Vox Machina.
