Not funny
cagdas-227 December 2008
This Movie tries to tell the story of Lanze who is in love with the princess. One day the princess is kidnapped by the Dark Knight and Lanze starts his journey to rescue her. But he is not alone because Erdal, a turk, joins him on his journey.

This movie is not funny. OK maybe one part with Roberto Blanco but thats it. Screenedit is worst and you cant find any serial red line throw the story to follow the content. The jokes aren't good and the acting is also miserable. This movie is like a mix of Craig Mazins "Superhero Movie" and Brian Helgelands "A Knight's Tale" with typical German influences. Kind of Slapstick comedy without the comedy (like Superhero Movie).

Summary : 1 1/2 hours waste of time 3/10

slow moving

I really was disappointed after watching this movie. The cast was promising, a lot of famous Germans actors and comedians are participating in this movie. Even the plot was promising but i don't know what happened. Some sequences were way too long, the beginning was lame and funny scenes weren't that funny. And this movie is NOT for the whole family, my advice: please leave your kids under 12 years at home, because an important topic is sex. I wished there were more funny moments in it. There is no spirit in this movie. Of course there were some points where i had to laugh, mostly when the character called Erdal was on screen. This was not a good German comedy.

Rick Kavanian saved the film from being a complete disaster
cmeisinger3 January 2009
Warning: Spoilers
Til Schweiger's performance was an absolute tragedy. Whereas Thomas Gottschalk was surprisingly good (for those who remember him in the "Supernasen"-moviews), Rick Kavanian as Erdal was very funny and Udo Kier creepy as always. On the pro side are the sets, costumes and the score. Those have international standard. The story is incredibly boring and many (no, almost all) jokes drain. What I personally found absolutely disgusting, was the fact that father and (15 year old) son were cast as homosexual lovers...just ugh! Overall, the movie was very disappointing. Especially after Til Schweiger's hilarious "Keinohrhasen".

Consider two hours on the rack instead ...
Thom-Peters24 September 2011
at least if you are not really into pain. Or with the Scavenger's daughter, the Scold's bridle and the Iron Maiden, they couldn't hurt quite as much as watching this insipid movie. It is based on one idea, one really simple idea: Put actors into a medieval setting, but let them talk and basically act like contemporary TV characters. You can take an old script that was too bland to even use it for a TV soap, change the parts to king, princess, knight and troubadour. That's all. Imagine the men's stupid hairdos that make them look like hillbillies - and what's funnier than that. Don't overdo it like those Monty Python guys, using gags and stuff. The viewers are already laughing about the hairdos, don't over-strain them.

That is no exaggeration. The dialog and the storyline are extremely dull. How did the writers manage it to get their script accepted? With no images to distract from the trite content this seems to be an impossible task. Yet they succeeded. They probably put an image of a medieval hairdo on every single page.

Though "1 1/2 Ritter" is an intellectual disaster, the lack of money hasn't been the problem here. The art department's work looks alright. There are lots of well known German actors - acting stupid. Is this the most embarrassing role poor iconic Udo Kier ever agreed to stain himself with? Probably not. It's still a pity. The most dignified acting is delivered by Dieter Hallervorden, who's been infamous for his silly comedies in the Eighties. Compared to "Zeroes" comedies like "1 1/2 Ritter" they don't look half bad. A good thing for Mr. Hallervorden, annoying for nearly everybody else.

The only thing remotely interesting about this movie is the startling lack of any redeeming qualities and therefore the question: How could this happen?

Most boring film from Til Schweiger
liperta26 December 2008
Warning: Spoilers
In Vienna I watched this film in December 2008 in a 300 seated cinema with 10 people - one fast asleep. And I must admit my neighbor and me had troubles to stay awake. 1st comment after the end: langweiligggggg --> boring. He admitted I must have slept through the only joke in this film. And he was right. No one was laughing. Bohnensuppe must have been in a different film but not in 1 1/2 Ritter. Ritter Til Schweiger shows his saure Gurken face all the time while Herzelinde has to smile all the time. Best actor according to my neighbor : Rick Kavanian whose DANEBEN is the best joke of the film . That's why they showed him in the trailer. Looking at IMDb voting for 1 1/2 Ritter : the 1s have it. Go and see another Til Schweiger film because this one is certainly his most boring.

Can't unsee :(
dukeluke-113 August 2009
Thanks to Rick Cavanian, Didi Hallervorden and Roberto Blanco 4-5 scenes are remotely funny, the rest of the movie had me cringing with pain due to unfunny jokes and horrific acting. Furthermore the plot has no continuity and failed to generate any suspense. Most chapters are introduced by showing the scenery or close-ups of some plants which isn't a bad thing per se, but these sequences are rather longer than needed. The soundtrack, while good (despite obvious Gladiator and The Dark Knight influences), doesn't seem to be aware of what's going on in the movie, the protagonists are accompanied by happy-go-lucky tunes almost all the time, in peril or not. Don't waste your time with this.

Avoid this
richardgeuter5 June 2018
There isn't even a year between this and the release of Til Schweiger's previous film, "Keinohrhasen" ("Rabbit without Ears"). Thankfully, he didn't write the script this time around, so in the ever-growing Schweiger canon this film stands out: Instead of making a romantic comedy about an irresponsible manchild who learns to commit to a meaningful relationship by the end, this one is a broad medieval comedy. It has therefore more in common with similar German period spoof films, like the "7 Zwerge" ("7 dwarfs") movies or the earlier films by Michael Herbig, although none of these are set in medieval times.

A big advantage of Schweiger giving screenwriting duties to other people is the fact that he plays a different character than in all his other movies. His stale performance in "Keinohrhasen" didn't convince me of his acting talent, but I found him rather enjoyable here. He is still sloppily mumbling through his lines and his face muscles rarely move, but put a silly wig on him and write him as somewhat socially awkward, and you can make his role kind of funny and refreshing.

All the other players in this movie, most of them television personalities rather than actors, don't venture out of their comfort zone, and are therefore not as refreshing. The casting of Thomas Gottschalk as King Gunther is technically spot-on, but unfortunately Gottschalk takes his role far too seriously. Same for Udo Kier. The only genuinely good performance comes from Rick Kavanian, but that doesn't mean he made me laugh.

That's because the script is painfully unfunny. Some of the comedy bits are lifted from better films, and stupid pseudo-gags are extended way beyond what is appropriate. Which might be the reason behind the long running time. There is no justification for this movie being almost two hours long, it just makes its glaring writing and pacing issues even more apparent.

Many movies like this feature some anachronistic jokes, which often makes it hard for me to develop some interest or belief in their fictional worlds, but those jokes are often reserved for quick one liners, and since these films are typically quite fast-paced, they don't take me out of the story. In "1 1/2 Ritter," however, the pacing is painfully slow, so there is nothing to compensate for all the jokes that don't land or take you out of the movie. The performances, as described above, are very low-energy, so even they don't compensate for the lack of genuine comedy writing. Compare this to the movies I listed as comparisons above (which, mind, are no masterpieces either).

As a director, Schweiger is clearly out of his depth directing action scenes. A movie like this doesn't need good action because, unlike most historical dramas, the story doesn't require extended fight scenes, but that didn't stop Schweiger from including them anyway. And because he apparently couldn't afford a stunt double to perform some good choreography, all of them consist of rapidly edited close-ups of Schweiger going "hrrrng!" and violently punching his enemies.

As for improvements: At least the pictures in the film have a little more colour in them than in "Keinohrhasen," the camera work in general is pretty good, and the soundtrack is well-placed and might even be listenable if you listen to it independent from the movie.

Lots of chaos and hubbub, but rarely funny
Horst_In_Translation8 April 2015
Warning: Spoilers
This film here is Til Schweiger's approach to a Middle Ages comedy. It is one of these rare cases where he did only direct the film without writing it. He got help from two co-directors, including Torsten Künstler with whom he already worked on several movies. And, of course, Schweiger also stars in it. It all comes down to rescuing princess Herzelinde and the ending is of course Schweiger's character and Herzelinde being a couple. The only thing I found kind of amusing is Thomas Gottschalk as the King. Everything else is really not funny, although down to the smallest roles this cast features very well known actors from Germany, as it's usually the case with Schweiger movies. And even the New Kids on the Block give a performance.

The humor on this film is mostly based on mixing Middle Ages logic with references to today's modern world. One early example would be a knight tournament with a modern sports broadcast commentator. However, it gets repetitive pretty quickly and quickly isn't funny anymore if it ever has been. Also there is some suggestive humor included here and there with not so great wordplay gently-put. The antagonists are played by Udo Kier and Mark Keller, as we find out later in the film. All in all, it's a disappointing effort, possibly the biggest failure in Schweiger's career. But you can only partially blame him for that. The script was just a huge mess and maybe this movie is one of the main reasons why he has written his own movies afterward again. Also with a running time of almost two hours, it did drag at times. Not recommended.

Entertaining enough
fboecom20 August 2009
I just saw it at Lufthansa, maybe not the best motivation but I was pleasantly surprised anyway. For humor a German film would not be my first choice. I took the original German sound with English subtitles and appreciated that (being Dutch). The movie is not spectacular in its story or plot and has a classic happy end, but the mix between let's say full medieval scenery and very contemporary culture I found interesting and funny enough. For sure, there is some sex, but more as sound than image and on the level of relatively modest western moral standards, but I would say that adds to the fun of watching this movie. So why this movie? The photography is done very well, very nice to look at, spectacular fighting scenes sometimes, beautiful characters and clothing. It can be slow at times, and indeed never really hilarious, but actually I find that more of a compliment than when it would have gone over the top there. When you do not want a Hollywood film once again, don't want to be annoyed but instead just have entertaining watch time, this movie is a good choice.

A German comedy that is actually funny even through subtitles
AgentSauvage18 October 2019
I was incredibly surprised that I enjoyed this film, but I found it to be one of the best 'Friday Night' comedies I have seen for a long time. Even though the film is subtitled and scripted in German (never my first port of call for issues of comedy) I laughed out loud (genuinely, not the trite LOL of social media) at several points. It is an historical romp that sensitively touches on several issues and has several modern day references that could ruin a film, but actually fit in. I loved the idea of a psychiatrist analysing the German equivalent of Robin Hood and concluding 'You've got a problem!' and I thought the idea of fans of a boy band throwing their chastity belts at the singers instead of their underwear an amusing sideline. The sensitive addressing of certain issues puts this film ahead of the crass denials of The Holy Grail and other similar comedies. I also loved the idea of inviting a sympathetic gaoler - and his daughters - to your own wedding a pleasant touch. This film has touches of the Holy Grail, Robin Hood Prince of Thieves, The Man of La Mancha, Les Visiteurs, The Blackadder, Time Bandits and Jabberwocky all mixed together but given an unique feel - all in German with sub titles. I also found the slightly unusual musical score refreshingly good - I would like to know if a recording of just the score is available. The Knight of the title is a Superstar Knight who falls from favour - and is imprisoned - because he failed to protect the Princess he was meant to be guarding, but he is then given a chance to redeem himself by searching for the kidnapped princess, whom he adores. The Half-a-Knight from the title is a Christian Moorish con-man (what a concept!) whose very existence touches upon many modern issues, and whose role is sensitively played. I suspect the negative reviews are from viewers who could not see beyond the mixing of modern with medieval (there was a decision to add a New Kids on the Block concert that makes little sense apart from the comic issues that arise therefrom). Perhaps those reviewers should remember that this is a comic romp and is not intended to be historically accurate! In fact there are some interesting performances here (albeit no great acting moments), sensitive treatment of certain issues and the occasional genuine laugh-out-loud moment of real comedy. I will definitely watch this film again (and again)

Devilish carbon monoxide is a German comedy
lyubitelfilmov30 May 2022
Devilish carbon monoxide is a German comedy about a strong, but very timid knight and a princess who was kidnapped by an insidious villain. The film perfectly ridicules all the vices of modern society (especially German). And you will remember him as Thiel Schweiger in a stupid wig, his friend and companion a talkative Turk and a carbon monoxide, and most importantly - funny humor, which not every modern comedy gives. I stumbled upon the film completely by accident - and hit the nail on the head! Enjoy watching it and get a portion of good mood, although we have a typical comedy with a hackneyed script and twists, but all the actors who just caught a buzz from filming in this movie are pulling out - and this is perfectly visible. At the same time, humor never slips into outright vulgarity.

My rating is 7 out of 10 and my recommendation for viewing!

Excellent funny movie
conall-wylde30 August 2009
Well I must say first that lately I've become bored with movies. Kind of an overdose, really, with at least one or two movies a day for the last 3 years. Always the same plots, the same actors, the same styles, the same politically correct and, well, the same everything. So I saw this one thinking that it was going to be the same... again. And boy was I wrong! Of course, there are some "deja vu" things here : the spirit of Shrek, a scene from François Ier with Fernandel, some souvenirs from Princess Bride, some from Kaamelott... But all witty and with good rhythm, and curiously, somehow new. I loved the actors, all unknown to me (though strangely it's been like I've known them forever instantly) but all very good at their part, the casting is outstanding because every character is just so perfectly what you'd expect him/her to be, Lanze wear so seriously his ridiculous hairdo, the Black Knight is so charming, the king so good, the bad one so creepy, the princess so spoiled yet lovable... Anyway, I've spent a very entertaining moment, and I wasn't able to stop before the end, nor did I want to do so, though this has happened to me countless times for other movies lately. It's very well acted, and everything in it just feels right. For me, it's an instant classic. A great and lovable movie, really.

Extremely funny and well-made spoof comedy
Bohnensuppe19 December 2008
I saw this film yesterday and could not stop laughing, as most of the crowd in the almost sold-out theatre. This is very well made and full of surprises. The cast ist first-rate, especially Tobias Moretti delivers his best performance. You can feel that they had a lot of fun in the making of it. After his mega-success with "Keinohrhasen". Til Schweiger has done it again. Production values are top notch and as good as Hollywood standarts. Cinematography and sound effects are first class. There is even a new song by New Kids on the Block. This Til Schweiger guy really knows how to please his audience. This is also a film for the whole family and for repeated viewings!
