Farting didn't seem funny to me anymore
jack_o_hasanov_imdb14 August 2021
I think my understanding of comedy has changed as time has passed. Farting didn't seem funny to me anymore, when I first watched it I was a kid, a teenager and the first movie was funny to me. I watched other movies too -_- What did I do?? The Movie is very, very bad.

Not very bad
umur-190720 April 2008
I can't say waste of time for Recep Ivedik because i enjoyed in a couple of scenes while i was watching it.Maybe it wasn't a brilliant comedy movie, but you can watch this for laughing. But don't wait very much.

But i can't understand most of people who watched this movie. After one month they can still make same jokes for each other and they can still laugh.Maybe some of the jokes was good in movie but after movie making the same jokes again and again is really boring.

Finally i can say that Recep Ivedik isn't a good comedy but not very bad at all.You don't lose much if you just skip over it.

What's so funny?
asyakocaturk6 January 2009
This movie consists of a bunch of fart jokes, has no real comedy value or real acting. Sahan Gokbakar is somewhat a good comedian on TV, but as Recep Ivedik; he offers nothing to his audience. Anyone would get the same reaction he did, if they wore the same clothes and make up and said the same stuff. He does not bring anything to the role. There is no acting. There's basically a man; who is rude, filthy, smelly, horny and stupid. There's no depth to the character at all. And that man is supposed to be funny because he has huge eyebrows and a very hairy back? There is no plot either. The movie just jumps from scene to scene. From joke to joke. And the movie ends really abruptly. I can recommend this movie for people who has IQ below 70.

Toilet humor nothing more..
mertozturk5 March 2008
Some films are so bad that they are actually good. And occasionally we feel affection for them because if nothing else, they invoke feelings of nostalgia when imagination and creativity were almost commonplace and the bottom line. However do not be fooled into thinking that because you found old Kemal Sunal, Sener Sen or Zeki-Metin movies or other well-written Turkish comedies funny, you'll respond similarly to this Recep Ivedik.

Sahan Gokbakar is not a very "funny" guy. At least for me.. He tries so hard to be funny, it is impossible not to be annoyed by him. I can maybe watch some 5 minutes of him and that would be it. This is 90 minutes and that was harsh.

If you don't count the continuous swearing and its unbearable annoyance, there is supposed to be a joke hiding somewhere in this film but obviously I blinked at the wrong time. If you have the sense of humor of an emotionally retarded orangutan you might just enjoy it but be sure not to blink..

If you are into Turkish humor or want to see a Turkish movie, please pass this. Try some old Sener Sen movies... Otherwise get ready to see some solid toilet humor without any endowment.

Think before writing...
sarnath944 March 2008
Warning: Spoilers
This film shouldn't be taken seriously because the goal is to make people laugh and unfortunately in Turkey that's how the things work. This film doesn't have a reasonable story, doesn't have good acting in it (instead of some exceptions) Also the jokes are not funny for everyone. Generally they were childish jokes but most of the people find it amusing to watch a man with hair all around his body do stupid things. Before doing bad comments on this film I think everyone should think about the GOAL of the film before saying "there were no story" and such. This character shouldn't have become a film because it was pretty much fine as a sketch.

Shadda Up!
elsinefilo2 August 2008
Warning: Spoilers
If you met Recep İvedik in real life you would possibly not like him. Recep İvedik (Şahan Gökbakar) is hirsute fellow with an unpretentious or unaffected attitude. In the beginning of the movie we meet Recep getting relieved of police custody resulted from his harassing a traffic police officer because of "something approaching at waist level and that someone commanded blow it" in his words. After getting his phone, belt, window crank, and marbles (which have emotional value for Recep. Later in the movie we find out that these marbles are the only thing that reminds him of his childhood love, Sibel(Fatma Toptas) he gets out of there with his car. When he stops at the traffic lights he notices that a man dropped his wallet while crossing the street. When a beggar tries to get the wallet before him he tells him bluntly "Hold it there! What are you gonna do with it. You don't have any tax or rent here" which is one of the most funny punch lines of the movie and which maybe unknowingly satirizes the system in which the middle man has to deal with grueling taxes while so many brown-noser rich guys just live at the expense of these middle man. When Recep sees the man on TV and likes his being a tax record breaker he decides to hand over the wallet himself. On the road he comes across two girls whose car broke down to whom he lends his own battery then his own car won't work without one. He calls the customer care service and tells the guy on the line " Is this an electric car? Isn't it supposed to be working on gas?" He completes the rest of the road in a sequence of hitchhikes through which he meets a funny hodgepodge of truck drivers and a gay truck driver who hit on Recep, a group or rockers who are "four bacons stinking like the perineum" in Recep's words. When he finally gets to meet the businessman, he admonishes him for not taking care of his wallet while those rocker guys he'd call irresponsible have their wallets chained up. When the businessman tries to return the favor Recep rejects the offer severely but when he takes his step out of the gate he sees a tour bus carrying his childhood love,Sibel. He recognizes her by her birthmark which Recep resembled a "shit stain" back then. Recep rethinks the offer then and decides to stay there. With his stay the natural course of a five-star hotel changes. I will not write about the rest of the movie not to the spoil the whole fun. I am not movie-goer who calls himself close to comedy potboilers but Recep Ivedik sounded a bit different to me. He is openly an oaf but he does not deny that he is clumsy or aggressive. You won't find risqué, ribald and off-color jokes in the way he talks. The best you can find from him is "if we sit more like that, our testosterones will catch cold" The very quality of being laughable or comical comes from his blunt, rude but yet again sincere and honest way of talking. The movie is totally unrealistic but yet again it is a comedy....

This movie is kind of great, but also not
ertunahmetali2 December 2023
The amount of bad ratings this movie has gotten over these recent years might come from a phonomonea that i call "lost in generation", where a film that used to be revolutionary gets rotten with the growing movie industry, and the company is still making sequels like its their mario, so this movie, from a 2008 perspective is great, but for a modern viewer, this would be weird for them, there has been greater films then this, and i always call this "Turkiye's Shrek", due to how edgy it is (plus the fart jokes), so if you like that sort of comedy, go for it, nobody is stoping you, but it isn't #1.

A complete waste of time...
arda_unique9 March 2008
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is a waste of time. The ironic thing is the dramatic scenes are more successful then the rest of the movie. This movie is a collection of some sketches from previous years but a lot worse and an unsuccessful combination of Mr. Bean and Kemal Sunal movies. Other famous actors in the movie couldn't even save the movie from boredom, because they also performed unrealistic cliché comedy acting, which never returned to audience as a laugh. I am happy that it is not the worst comedy movie (or a sketch) I have ever seen. I gave 2 stars, because that was an experience, which proved that even good actors could act crap. Unbelievably most of the people rated this movie very high. I guess it is a kind of movie you love it or hate it.

Excellent work
hteyler5 April 2008
I really really can't understand some negative feedback about this movie. It's about a well known character in the series starring in an adventure in this. You can compare it with Sacha Baron Cohan playing Borat and also making a movie about him. It's really a great movie. A very simple story with guarantee to a lot of laughter. I've seen it for three times now and it still remains very funny. As a Turkish person I'm also very glad that new talents like Sahan are taking over the Turkish cinema. I hope we'll have a sequel. Time will tell. Most attractive about this character is his typical view to things and his comment about it. Definitely the best comedy I've ever seen.

worst Turkish movie ever..
Gokhan_Duran2 April 2008
This movie is completely loss of time. İt is absolutely zero. It contains no intelligence, no ability to make smile, no entertainment..nothing.. ,

What does it have? It has rudeness, simplicity, plainness, lots of bad language. I am forcing myself to find something good, but,no..i cannot. Worse than this,it's told that a sequel is being filmed. İ hope that is not true but if it's true, prepare yourself.

I recommend Sahan, the actor, not to make any movies, any program on TV. Just stay at home.

The beast within a nation.
kml170128 July 2008
İ really gave the film 3 stars. Not because it deserved it but people took some time for it. I failed to understand people pay a good deal of money to watch this thing on a theater. There are free shows in some animal channels focusing on furry animals, acting the same mating behaviors. Well, the film may be funny because of its irrational anti hero but that popularşty, that idol.Come on, the guy is on the commercials now.I guess there is a mass delusion around. Is this what reflects us? I can say that just because of our own mentality, we will never reach up to some certain points. This field is one of them. And there are many fans of that furry animal i know.I feel pity for those who pay to this film while having a girlfriend next to them.

that cant be a comedy movie, don't waste your time, just skip over Recep Ivedik
tarhantas0216 March 2008
Although my favorite film choices are horror and comedy, i have seen that movie was full of so much rude and stupid sayings and behaviors of the characters. Somebody will say that is the rule of comedy, yeah i agree with you but is that the only criteria? Nobody can tell me that any logical witticism exists in that movie, all of them are ordinary and not original at all. Also there are some errors and missing scenes, conversations which must be sticked in the movie (if the movie is a visual puzzle, this is not solved as well). I don't criticize about the story because it will be normal to be "illogical" in radical comedies. I want to add that we can see Recep Ivedik took "for first 3 days record" after Kurtlar Vadisi. That consequence make me to mention that Turkish people must take a powerful lesson about both understanding what is the real "comedy" and what is the real "film", unfortunately, it will take a long time. In brief, i must admit this movie didn't make me laugh at least one time as a continuous comedy laughing viewer. I have looked in a confused and worried glance to the people in the cinema saloon that is laughing.

do not waste your time
zeki-mustafa27 November 2008
If you think that seeing ugly, unsocial, rude things being done is FUN, then this movie is for you. You can see all cheap behaviors being done and strangely and unrealistically approved by others in the movie.

All the same story of going south story, naked girls, pissing on the trees. Common, people go to movie because they would like to see some real life and some real quality.

Don't be fooled by how many people watched this thing.

Don't be fooled by this monkey had worked to create some real job.

If you have seen this thing and you kind of liked it, then there is something terribly wrong with your life.

This "thing" does not deserve being called a movie.

Very Funny!!!
edremitli12 May 2008
This is the funniest movie I've ever seen! I don't understand the negative comments... Are you guys living on the moon, or what? I want to remind you that this movie broke the records in Turkey. Everybody in the theater, including myself, were laughing like hell during the whole movie. So, if you really didn't like the movie than the problem is with you, not with the movie or the majority...

Recep Ivedik is similar to Kemal Sunal movies in some aspects. Kemal Sunal movies are also so "simple", full of slang and don't have a strong plot. But, no matter how many times you saw these Kemal Sunal movies, they still make you laugh.

In my opinion those, who criticize Recep Ivedik, pretend to be intellectuals and have strong superiority complex. However, they don't see that by behaving so, they are presenting their ignorance and lack of understanding capacity...

10/10 from me.

A broad comedy farce that bring the iconic comedy buffoon to the big screen...
cgyford26 February 2010
Popular Turkish comedy writer and performer Şahan Gökbakar ("Dikkat sahan cikabilir") recruits his younger brother Togan Gökbakar ("Gen") to direct the big screen début of his titular comedy character in this crude farce that was the year's box office number one in Turkey and has spawned two equally successful sequels.

Recep İvedik (Şahan Gökbakar) is a fat, aggressive, unibrowed slob who is put up in a classy Antalya hotel as reward for returning the owners lost wallet and proceeds to reek havoc with his uncouth ways as he tries to win over his childhood sweetheart Sibel (Fatma Toptas) in the set-up to this rather uninspired class-clash comedy.

Şahan Gökbakar creates an inspired burlesque exaggeration of the modern Turkish peasantry at large in the city while superb support comes from the likes of Fatma Toptas. Tulug Cizgen and Hakan Bilgin as the westernised "White Turks" whose mores and manners he violently collides with to give the film its comic edge.

The film-makers quickly eschew any deep social-commentary on the class-clash at the heart of their film in favour of broad farce and crude behaviour that sets the comedy creation among the likes of Mr. Bean or Borat except that here they are driven by a misguided romantic endeavour that requires us to actually empathise with this boorish buffoon.

"Hear me well; I'm aggressive, I have complexes."

Why Turkish People Enjoys This Movie?
alexruthbonenesim12 March 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Don't get me wrong. I'm a Turkish too. But I can't really see why they enjoys this character. I guess that's because they don't watch a lot of movies. Whatever. I guess I need to talk about the movie. Here's the reason why I gave this movie 2 out of 10;

-It has a story. I mean yes the only thing good about this movie is that Recep having a road trip to give a man his wallet. And than we see his childhood friend. Than Recep decides to stay a little more to win his childhood friend's heart.

Yes it may be looking like a good and simple story to you. But trust me the way that Recep solves the problems that gets in his way is so rude and simply; Fart Jokes.

Actually none of the jokes are smart. There is only one more thing I want to point out in this review; This movie is based on a stereotypical Turkish character. And nowadays, you can't see anyone acts like him in Turkey. That's just a wrong way to make a comedy movie. And I can't believe this movie is the most loved movie in Turkey. ASHAMED!

I am writing this review now, cause the 5th movie of this franchise is in theaters now. So if you are about to watch this movie just because it's loved by millions in Turkey, don't. Like I said, I still don't know why Turkish people enjoys this movie. I guess I won't find out in this Lifetime.

Really Funny, IF you'r Turkish
akifo18723 August 2013
I really cant believe why these few people write such terrible reviews about this movie.

First of all, you have to be Turkish /familiar with the Turkish culture and values. If you are not known with these then this movie might look like a 'farting and shouting - movie'.

I believe that the Actor and director reflected some Turkish behavior in this movie very good and its just a very funny movie.

I've seen of hundreds of movies including a bunch of Turkish movies but there hasn't been a single movie that made my laugh my *** off as much as this movie.

Just see for yourself en don't stop yourself because of the few bitter people who write reviews who don't have a sense of humor.

Don't be put off by despising comments; it's really funny. Watch it and have your own opinion.
gturemen16 April 2009
I really enjoyed this film. I had some doubts (prejudice rather) about it previously, due to a lot of people around me despising it. Therefore I haven't seen it until I saw bits of the sequel, and realised that I've really missed out on a remarkably funny movie. Yes it has elements of toilet humour, balls humour etc... But it's a comedy and it's bloody funny! The fact that some people of more "ordinary" taste in cinema might enjoy it too does not make it a lousy movie. Obviously it's not up there with the best of its genre, but it does what it says on the tin. Sahan Gokbakar has created a rather primitive character that is all but too familiar to Turkish audiences, thanks to similar movies and -what the heck- the man on the street! But the character also has a genuinely funny (not talking about the toilet humour) and sometimes surprisingly intelligent side to him.

I have a good taste in movies, but I'm not ashamed to say that I really enjoyed the 100-minutes I spent watching Recep Ivedik. I must say though, that it primarily appeals to a Turkish audience who would be familiar with the context. It may be perceived as a low-budget Borat copy by others.

Cleverly designed piece of art
baris7476 August 2008
I was one of the people who did not find the concept of "Recep Ivedik" making a movie very attractive. I found myself to be wrong after watching the whole movie.

Very few movies have given me this unique feeling about my own country (Turkey) and my own people (Turks). I had the chance to get to know the character Recep Ivedik better in this movie. He represents a majority of my people, who are looked down to by the elite as hillbillies or rednecks because of their inability to adapt to the civil life. What most people fail to see however, is that a good heart may be hidden behind the curtains. Recep is such a person, who will go 700 km on foot to return a wallet or give his own car battery in order to help other people fix their car, or carry the toys he could not give to his childhood love with him at all times.

This delicateness and naiveness of Recep, who describes himself as "Agressive, has inferiority complex but behind the curtains a person similar to a kitten" is what makes this character so lovable. The movie gives lots of insight regarding the middle Anatolian lifestyle and the culture clash between people who have migrated into major cities from rural areas, just like Recep.

I loved the movie and I loved the character, and now I love my country even more, thanks to this movie, which is seen by many as 1.5 hours of continuous laughter. I laughed hard with most, but also had tears in my eyes every once in a while.

if you like the comedy character Recep Ivedik you will like this film
mustafa_er12 March 2008
First off, there's one point that I'd like to make is that what did you the watchers expect from this film ?? You expected a top comedy ? You honestly thought that this would be the funniest Turkish comedy ever ? If you go to see this flick with huge hopes and have huge expectations, then this film might disappoint you hugely. If you expect the best Turkish comedy, your hopes might get shattered. Keep this in mind when going to see this film.

As we know the funny character from previous TV shows, the pranks and the funny dialogs were predictable. Nothing new of course what we see! Hence I don't understand why the viewers moan about this comedy!! They should have known better if you ask me. However, I can say that if you like the comedy character Recep Ivedik you will like this film as well. Worth seeing, really it is, honest I think so. This film's served its purpose in my opinion. Some of the scenes are hilarious, I laughed really hard at some gags, couldn't stop laughing at some absurd dialogs, too. It's not that you nearly die of laughter or laugh out loud all the way through out. But this comedy film has a lot of giggle moments. OK, even though it's got not a clever story-line, and the plot might be dull but like most comedies I was entertained but not to the point of laughing out loud , but it was still entertaining for me. Unfortunately, towards the end, everything is done badly, like in Turkish comedies nowadays!

Sahan Gokbakar (Recep Ivedik) is superb in the film. To tell the truth I was glad that the character Recep Ivedik played the role as we know him from his TV shows. Nothing new was added to the role which I found cool. Other than that, the bellboy Komi and the lorry driver are really annoying, but Sahan Gokbakar (Recep Ivedik) and Tulug Cizgen (Sibel's mother) save the film.

To sum up, I can say that that Sahan Gokbakar fans would like this, however as with most comedy films which stem from an hour TV show, you do get a lot of problems, you can tell that it has been overstretched and gags that look good on TV don't always have the same effect on the big screen. As above-mentioned, it's not the best Turkish comedy flick in the world but then again it really doesn't deserve all the bad comments. It might not be great for some viewers but to say that this film was really p*** poor, and try to trash this funny film is not fair. I don't think much of the critics anyway but give this film a chance.
